Press Windows key + Up arrow (Win+Up) to maximize the active window. The shortcut applies to the window that currently has focus; it is different from snapping a window to one side or opening Snap layouts.
What does Win+Up do?
Win+Up maximizes the active window, according to Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut reference. “Active” means the window currently in focus. If the intended app is not focused, click it first or switch to it, then press the shortcut.

Microsoft’s keyboard tips describe Win+Up as moving a focused window through minimized, windowed, and maximized states. The shortcut list identifies its intended action as maximizing. What happens can depend on the window’s current state and the application.

How is maximizing different from snapping?
Maximizing expands a window to fill the available desktop area. Snapping arranges it alongside other windows. Microsoft’s Snap guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11 and explains that Snap can be used with a keyboard, mouse, or touch.

- Win+Up: maximize the active window.
- Win+Left or Win+Right: snap the active window to the corresponding side; these shortcuts do not mean “maximize.”
- Win+Z: open Snap layouts, where you can choose an arrangement.
Snap options are configured in Settings > System > Multitasking. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so the guide’s inclusion of Windows 10 does not mean that version remains in standard support.

If Win+Up does not maximize the window
- Make sure the window you want is active, then try again.
- Check whether the app supports maximizing or is already maximized.
- If you meant to return a maximized or snapped window to a smaller state, use Win+Shift+Down instead.
- If you wanted a side-by-side arrangement, use Win+Left or Win+Right; use Win+Z to choose a Snap layout.
