Options may include Business Call Identification and supported caller-identification apps. Which sources appear—and whether they recognize a particular number—depends on your carrier, apps, and the information available to them.
Turn on caller identification
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Phone.
- Tap Call Blocking & Identification.
- Enable the identification options shown, such as Business Call Identification or supported caller-identification apps.
- If you have more than one identification app, review their order. Apple says you can prioritize an app; other enabled apps may be used if the first cannot identify a caller.
The available switches vary according to the carrier and compatible apps you use. Apple does not guarantee that every caller or business will be identified. Apple’s iPhone guide describes caller identification through Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, and supported apps.

Where iPhone gets caller information
A caller’s name or business information can come from several sources. Apple’s Phone settings guide lists contacts, Name and Photo Sharing, carrier call directories, Business Call Identification, and supported caller-identification apps. Business identification may use Apple Business Connect information or information provided by a cellular provider. Apple’s guide to Phone settings also explains that caller-identification apps can be reordered in Call Blocking & Identification.

Check that the relevant source is enabled, then consider whether your carrier or app supports information for that number. Enabling a source cannot identify a caller it does not recognize.

Caller identification is not call screening
Identification adds information about a caller; it does not determine whether an unsaved number rings. Screening, silencing, filtering, and blocking are separate call-handling controls.
In Settings > Apps > Phone, Apple’s current guidance describes these options for unknown callers:

- Never: unsaved numbers can ring normally.
- Ask Reason for Calling: the caller is screened before the phone rings.
- Silence: calls from unknown numbers are sent to voicemail.
Unknown Callers filtering puts missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers in a separate list. Calls identified by the carrier as spam can also be silenced and filtered. These controls are separate from the identification switches. See Apple’s instructions for screening and blocking calls for the options available on your iPhone.
If expected calls are not ringing
If a call goes straight to voicemail or you do not hear it ring, check the controls that affect call delivery—not just caller identification:

Live Voicemail and related voicemail features are not available in every country, region, or language; voicemail availability also depends on the carrier. Details are in Apple’s iPhone call-screening guidance and Apple’s Live Voicemail guidance.
