Don’t put anything into a consumer chatbot that could harm you if a person saw it or the provider retained it. Privacy settings can limit model improvement, visible history, or personalization, but those are separate controls—and none makes a hosted chatbot a confidential vault. Check the settings and terms for the exact app and account you use; work or school accounts may follow different rules.
What “private” means for a chatbot conversation
A chatbot can handle a conversation in several different ways. Changing one setting does not necessarily change the others:

- Model improvement: whether the provider may use conversations to improve its models. A setting that turns this off does not necessarily remove chats from your history.
- Visible history: whether you can see the conversation in your account and whether you can delete it. Hiding or deleting a chat is not necessarily the same as ending every form of provider retention.
- Memory and personalization: whether the service saves details to personalize future chats. This may be controlled separately from chat history and model improvement.
- Human review: whether people may review conversations, for example for safety, service improvement, or feedback. “Not used for training” does not automatically mean “never reviewed.”
- Operational retention: how long the provider may keep data to operate, secure, or support the service. Temporary modes may still involve short-term retention.
Uploads, feedback, voice conversations, and connected apps can have their own handling. Treat each as a separate way information may be shared.

How the four services handle privacy controls
This comparison describes consumer chatbot controls reported by the providers in 2026. “Not stated” means the cited provider guidance summarized here does not establish a comparable detail; it is not a guarantee that the data is never handled that way.

Provider controls and retention notices can vary by country, age, account type, app version, or organization administrator. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub was updated September 24, 2026; Microsoft notes that an updated Copilot app was available August 18, 2026. Check the current notice for your account before relying on a setting.
ChatGPT: separate model improvement from history
- Open Settings → Data Controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says new conversations will remain in history but will not be used to improve ChatGPT.
- For a one-off conversation, choose Temporary Chat before you begin. It has the history and memory behavior described in the table; if you save it, it becomes a regular chat subject to your account settings.
- Delete existing chats you do not want in visible history. OpenAI says deleted chats cannot be restored. Deleting a chat is a separate action from turning off model improvement.
OpenAI says certain associated GPT, project, or file data is scheduled for permanent deletion within 30 days when deleted, except where legal or security obligations require longer retention. That stated window is not a promise that every piece of information is immediately erased from every system.

Gemini: turn off Keep Activity and review past activity
- In your Google Account, open Gemini Apps Activity and turn Keep Activity off for future chats.
- Review and delete past activity separately. If you keep Activity on, review its auto-delete setting: Google says the default is 18 months, with options for 3 or 36 months, or no automatic deletion.
- Use Temporary Chat when you do not want a conversation saved in Activity or used for training.
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub says chats sent while Keep Activity is off, including temporary chats, may still be kept for 72 hours for service, feedback, and protection. Previously reviewed chats may remain for up to three years, disconnected from the account, even after you delete Activity. Google also cautions: “Please don’t enter confidential information that you wouldn’t want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve our services, including machine-learning technologies.”

Turning off Keep Activity does not turn off every Google data setting. Web & App Activity and Location History are separate, and some connected-app features may be unavailable when Keep Activity is off.

Copilot: check both conversation and voice training
- In the Copilot app or website, open the profile or settings area and find Privacy. Microsoft does not establish one menu path that applies to every version.
- Review the separate Training on conversation activity and Training on voice conversations controls for the signed-in consumer account.
- Delete earlier conversations separately if you do not want them in your prior conversation list.
Microsoft’s instructions may depend on the account and app version. Its updated Copilot app for web, desktop, and mobile was available August 18, 2026, with newer privacy information for that experience. If you are signed into a work or school account, check your organization’s applicable terms and administrator settings rather than assuming consumer Copilot controls apply.

- Open Settings → Privacy and review Model Improvement.
- Choose Incognito before a conversation you do not want used to improve Claude.
- Delete saved chats separately if you do not want them in your chat history.
Anthropic says Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. Its up-to-five-year retention statement applies to de-identified data from qualifying new or resumed chats allowed for improvement after the setting is enabled; it does not describe every chat. Anthropic also says deleting a chat prevents it from being used to train future models.

What to check before and after a sensitive conversation
- Before you type: remove names, account numbers, addresses, medical details, credentials, and other identifying information unless sharing them is necessary and acceptable to you. A setting cannot make an ordinary consumer chatbot a confidential service.
- Check the account: confirm whether you are using a personal account or a work or school account, and whether your organization manages settings or retention.
- Review what you attach: uploads, voice conversations, feedback, and connected apps may not follow the same controls as ordinary chat. Check the provider’s current notice for each feature you use.
- Clean up separately: delete old conversations and review any relevant activity, memory, or connected-service settings. A deletion or activity toggle may not remove data already reviewed or stored by a connected service.
- Verify the current interface: confirm the setting is in the expected state in the app and account you actually use. Names, locations, features, and terms can change.
