Before relying on ChatGPT, decide what you want it to remember, whether new conversations may be used to improve OpenAI’s models, and when you want a chat kept out of your history. Five controls cover those choices: model-improvement sharing, Memory, Reference chat history where available, Custom Instructions, and Temporary Chat for individual conversations. They are separate controls—not a single privacy switch—and their labels and availability can vary by account, plan, region, platform, and workspace.
1. Decide whether new conversations can help improve models
On a personal account, go to Profile > Settings > Data Controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. In the mobile app, open the sidebar, tap your profile, and go to Data Controls. OpenAI says the preference applies to your account across devices: new conversations after opting out won’t be used to improve its models, but regular chats remain in your history. This changes model-improvement use; it does not delete your history or make the account wholly private. OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, and ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces is not used to improve models by default. Workspace rules and available controls can differ, so check the settings and policies that apply to your account. Open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account and experience, this area may offer controls for saved memories, referencing chat history, or managing what ChatGPT has remembered. OpenAI notes that Memory controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Its Memory in ChatGPT guide describes the current options.

Memory and chat history are not the same thing. Turning Memory off does not erase past chats; deleting a chat alone may not remove a saved memory created from it. To remove a detail, delete it in the memory controls and, where applicable, remove it from the original chat or other source as well.
3. Check Reference chat history if the control appears
Some accounts show Reference chat history as a separate personalization control. It lets ChatGPT draw on information from past conversations. If you turn it off, OpenAI says information remembered from past chats is scheduled for deletion within 30 days; the original conversations remain in history unless you delete them separately.

If Reference saved memories is enabled, switching it off also switches off Reference chat history. Check the options shown in your own Settings > Personalization menu; not every account has the same controls. OpenAI’s Memory guide covers how these features interact.

4. Make Custom Instructions useful—and appropriate
Custom Instructions tell ChatGPT what to take into account when responding, such as your preferred level of detail, tone, or formatting. On web, desktop, iOS, and Android, find them in settings and add only preferences that are useful across many chats. You can edit or remove them for future conversations; changes apply immediately to chats.

Use concise guidance—for example, “Start with the answer, then give numbered steps” or “Explain technical terms in plain language.” Don’t treat the field as a private vault for sensitive information: OpenAI says information from Custom Instructions may be used to improve model performance, subject to your model-improvement settings. Start a new chat, select Temporary, then choose Personalized or Unpersonalized before sending your first message. Choose Unpersonalized if you don’t want the conversation to use existing memories, Custom Instructions, or plugins. The choice cannot be changed after the conversation begins.

Either option keeps the conversation out of chat history, prevents it from creating or updating memories while it remains temporary, and excludes it from model improvement. Personalized Temporary Chat may still use existing personalization. OpenAI’s Help Center describes the feature this way: “A temporary chat stays out of your chat history and is not used to improve OpenAI models while it remains temporary.”

Temporary does not mean immediate deletion: OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety. If you save the conversation, it becomes a regular chat and follows your usual account settings. Which settings should you change?

If you want continuity, use Memory, Reference chat history where available, and Custom Instructions deliberately. If you want to opt out of model improvement but keep your usual history, change the model-improvement control. If you want a particular conversation to avoid persistent history and memory updates, start it as Temporary and select the personalization option that matches your intent.
