Use Apple Keynote to make a photo collage on your iPhone without relying on a collage app’s ad inventory. Choose a template that does not require Creator Studio, add photos to slide placeholders, then export the slide as an image. The workflow is free when you stick to available templates, though it uses a presentation app rather than a dedicated collage editor.
Make a collage in Keynote
- Start a presentation. Open Keynote and choose a photo-oriented template available without a Creator Studio subscription. Macworld’s September 13, 2026 guide suggests “Photography Bold,” “Photo Essay,” and “Scrapbook Dark,” but some templates are subscription-only, so check the template’s availability before choosing it. - Choose a slide layout. Add a slide and select a layout with photo placeholders. Options described in the guide include two vertical photos, three photos side by side, or a photo with a caption.
- Add your photos. Tap a placeholder or its plus sign and select an image from your library. Repeat for the other placeholders.
- Adjust the design if needed. Use the paintbrush controls to change the background, layout, or title.
- Export the collage. Tap the three-dot menu, select Export, then Images. Use Share to send the resulting image to a social app or another destination.
Choose a layout that fits where you will share it
Macworld suggests a 4:3 slide ratio for many screen-display uses; a 16:9 slide may look too elongated in those situations. This is a design suggestion, not a universal rule: choose the ratio that suits the place you plan to post or display the collage. The guide also cautions that more than five photos can look small and cluttered in its example layouts.

When Google Photos may be a better fit
If you already use Google Photos or want a dedicated template editor, its iPhone and iPad workflow can create, customize, save, and share a collage. Google’s help page says the workflow accepts up to six photos: select them, tap Create, then Collage, and choose a template. In the editor, you can replace or edit photos, rotate or zoom them within frames, and drag them to reorder. (Google Photos collage help)

Google specifies iOS 18 or later and Google Photos version 7.64 or later for access to the new collage-editor updates. Some features may not be available on every device. Without an internet connection, only on-device layouts are available; the full range of designs requires an internet connection.

Google’s help page documents the collage workflow, but does not establish that Google Photos is ad-free. Choose it for its editor or because you already use it—not on the assumption that it guarantees an ad-free experience.
How to assess “free and no ads” claims
A “Free” App Store label does not, by itself, mean every collage feature is free or that an app has no ads. The inspected US App Store listing for “Photo Collage Maker,Free of ad” is marked “Free · In-App Purchases” and describes subscriptions. Before relying on a third-party collage app, check its current listing and the in-app screens for the specific feature you need, subscription prompts, and ad behavior. For a workflow that avoids a collage app’s ad inventory, Keynote is the clearest option here; make sure the template you select is not subscription-only.
