A float battery charger is designed to maintain a compatible, fully charged battery by replacing charge lost to self-discharge. Choose one by matching its supported voltage, battery chemistry, and stated capacity range to the battery’s label and manual—not by assuming every “trickle” or maintenance charger works with every battery or can stay connected indefinitely.
What a float battery charger does
After a battery is charged, a float stage supplies a controlled voltage to offset gradual self-discharge. The implementation varies by charger. Battery Tender describes its float voltage as typically 0.1 to 0.5 volt above the voltage of a fully charged battery at rest; that is the manufacturer’s explanation, not a universal industry specification. Battery Tender’s FAQ explains its approach.

Some chargers use a different sequence. For the XS 0.8, CTEK describes a FLOAT stage at about 13.6V and very low current for up to 10 days, followed by long-term PULSE maintenance. That timing and voltage apply to the XS 0.8 sequence only; they are not general rules for float chargers. See CTEK’s XS 0.8 support guidance.

“Trickle charger” can describe chargers that continuously supply a small current, but the label alone does not establish that charging is controlled or suitable for long-term connection. Battery Tender warns that some trickle-charger designs can produce excessive voltage and advises checking the battery periodically during extended connection. Follow the battery and charger makers’ instructions rather than treating “trickle,” “float,” and “automatic maintainer” as interchangeable terms. Battery Tender’s FAQ provides that warning.
#1 Best Overall
- Charger, Maintainer & Desulfator - An all-weather battery charger, battery maintainer, trickle charger, and battery desulfator. Perfect for charging and maintaining all 12-volt lead-acid, flooded or sealed maintenance free batteries (AGM and gel cell).
- Automatic Desulfation & Optimization - Automatic detection of battery sulfation problem. Applying with pulse current technology to desulfate the batteries effectively. Optimize the battery performance during charging without any manual operation.
- Energy Saving & Spark Free - Zero output in standby mode. No battery drain when connecting with the battery. Spark proof during lead connection for safety.
- Multi-level Safety Protection & Timer Set Up - Overcharge, short circuit and reverse polarity protected. Charge the battery up to 14.4V and Maintain the battery at 13.6V for long time to avoid gasing and to extend the battery life. 24-hour Timer is set up in the program to terminate the charge and enter the maintaining mode once the voltage is above 14V to ensure safety.
- Easy Operation -Just plug-in, connect to the battery and start charging or maintaining your battery. The desulfation is working automatically during the charing. No manual operation.
How to choose a charger that matches your battery
- Identify nominal voltage. Check the battery label or manual for 6V, 12V, or another rating. A charger’s voltage selector or supported voltage must match the battery.
- Confirm chemistry. Verify that the exact charger model supports the battery chemistry. Do not select a lead-acid mode for a lithium battery; lithium use requires an explicitly compatible program and compliance with the battery maker’s guidance.
- Check the stated capacity range and current. Compare the battery’s amp-hour rating with the charger maker’s published range. Current affects how quickly a charger can replenish a discharged battery, but the right choice also depends on the battery’s permitted charging rate and the charger’s instructions.
- Read the maintenance sequence and modes. Determine whether the unit uses float, pulse maintenance, automatic restart, or another process, and whether a mode has limits or disables protections.
- Account for the installation environment. If the charger will be exposed to weather, confirm that the specific model is rated for the intended conditions. A “weather-resistant” description is not a substitute for checking its manual and installation limits.
What the cited models specify
These manufacturer specifications illustrate why compatibility must be checked model by model. They are not universal sizing rules or independent performance-test results.
| Model | Supported voltage and chemistry | Published capacity and output | Maintenance or mode notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Battery Tender Plus 6V/12V | 6V/12V lead-acid chemistries, according to the product page | 14Ah–100Ah; 1.25A | Check the model instructions for its charging and maintenance behavior. Battery Tender product page, accessed 2026-10-07. |
| Battery Tender Weather Resistant 12V 800mA | 12V chemistries listed on the product page | 3Ah–50Ah; 800mA | Confirm the exact chemistry and environmental limits in the product information. Battery Tender product page, accessed 2026-10-07. |
| CTEK XS 0.8 | Refer to the XS 0.8 manual for supported battery type and voltage | Capacity range and output current: not stated in the cited support guidance | CTEK describes about 13.6V at very low current for up to 10 days in FLOAT, then PULSE maintenance. CTEK support page, accessed 2026-10-07. |
| CTEK PRO25S | Separate lead-acid and 12V lithium programs | Capacity range: not stated in the cited manual material | SUPPLY mode is 13.6V/22A, with no time or voltage limitation, and spark protection is disabled in that mode. This is a distinct operating mode, not an ordinary automatic maintenance cycle. CTEK PRO25S North America manual; publication date not established in the cited material. |
Using a maintainer during storage
Before connecting the charger, read both manuals and verify the battery is suitable for charging and maintenance in the intended condition. Use the connection method and polarity specified by the manufacturers, place the charger as directed, and select the correct battery program. Once connected, check status indicators and inspect the battery at the intervals the instructions require. Do not infer that a charger can be left connected all winter simply because it has a maintenance mode; permitted connection duration and inspection expectations are model-specific.

- Extend Battery Life: Compatible with all 12V lead-acid, flooded, AGM, and gel cell batteries. Complete 4-step charging program (Initialization, Bulk Charge, Absorption Mode, Float Mode) allows for optimization of battery power, without overcharging or battery damage. Smarter than a trickle charger.
- Includes: 12V, 750mA battery charger and battery maintainer with 12-foot output cord, fused-ring terminal harness for hard-to-reach batteries and alligator clip accessory cables, 5-year warranty, and lifetime customer support
- Simple & Safe: Low maintenance, easy-to-use, universal battery charger is just 3.3 x 1.3 x 2.4 inches, 1 lb (charger only). Spark-proof circuitry ensures no-spark connections, and automatic reversed hook-up detection verifies correct connection
- Monitor Power Levels: Two-color charge status LED light indicates the state of the charge and if the battery voltage drops too far under load, adaptive charging will resume full charger output power. Automatic charge cycle functionality switches to float mode after fully charging the battery
CTEK’s PRO25S SUPPLY setting deserves particular care: the manual specifies 13.6V/22A without time or voltage limitation and says spark protection is disabled in that mode. Do not confuse SUPPLY with the charger’s separate automatic lead-acid or lithium programs.

When the battery is lithium
Use only a charger whose exact model explicitly supports the battery’s lithium chemistry and voltage. The CTEK PRO25S manual distinguishes a 12V lithium program from lead-acid NORMAL mode. Confirm the battery manufacturer’s charging requirements too; a charger’s lithium label does not establish compatibility with every lithium battery.
