To make a background transparent, remove or mask it in an image editor and export the result as a PNG that preserves transparency. PNG transparency is an opacity mask—not a hidden background—and the mask determines how the foreground blends with the background supplied by the viewer. The best removal method depends on how uniform the background is, whether its colors appear in the subject, and how soft or detailed the subject’s edges are.
What transparency in a PNG actually means
A transparent PNG does not contain a background image waiting to be revealed. Its image data describes the foreground and a transparency mask; the application displaying it composites those pixels over its own background. The W3C PNG specification describes this foreground-and-mask model.

In a full alpha channel, each pixel has an opacity value: fully transparent pixels contribute nothing, fully opaque pixels contribute the foreground color, and intermediate values blend the foreground with the display background. PNG also supports transparency through alpha values associated with palette entries, or through a single transparent color in certain truecolor or grayscale images. These are different ways to represent transparency, not a guarantee that every PNG is transparent.

Why ordinary JPG files cannot preserve transparency
In the familiar legacy JPEG/JFIF still-image workflow, there is no PNG-style alpha channel. If you save a transparent composition in that workflow, the transparent areas must be flattened against a chosen color—often white—or you must save in a format that supports transparency.
That statement is specifically about ordinary legacy JPEG/JFIF files, not every technology in the JPEG family. JPEG XT is an extension family, and its Part 9 allows alpha-channel representation. That exception does not mean a typical JPG export from an image editor will preserve transparency; check the selected format and export options. See the JPEG Committee’s overview of JPEG standards.

Three practical ways to remove a background
These are useful practical classes of background removal, not an official or exhaustive three-algorithm taxonomy. In choosing among them, consider the background’s consistency, color overlap with the subject, edge complexity, and whether the result needs partial transparency.
1. Color-key removal
A color key marks pixels that match, or are sufficiently close to, a chosen background color as transparent. It works best when the background is clean, evenly colored, and distinct from the subject. It is fast, but the rule recognizes color similarity—not whether a pixel belongs to the subject.

If the subject contains the keyed color, those details can disappear. If edge pixels contain a blend of subject and background colors, an exact key can leave a colored fringe; broadening the tolerance can remove more of the subject. A collected academic paper distinguishes manual keying from alpha matting, but does not establish a universal performance ranking for these techniques: “Magenta Green Screen: Spectrally Multiplexed Alpha Matting with Deep Colorization”.
2. Threshold or region-mask removal
This approach identifies likely background pixels using cues such as color, brightness, position, or connectedness, then creates a mask. It can be useful when the background differs predictably from the subject—for example, when pixels near the frame edges share a color that is absent from the central subject.

It becomes unreliable when background and subject share colors or the background varies across the image. A hard threshold can produce jagged edges because pixels are classified as simply visible or invisible. A softened mask can preserve uncertain boundary pixels, but may also leave some background visible. This is a practical grouping of methods, not a category defined by the PNG specification.
3. Foreground segmentation and alpha matting
Segmentation estimates which areas belong to the foreground; alpha matting additionally estimates how much a boundary pixel is foreground versus background. That partial-opacity estimate helps represent soft or intricate contours, such as hair, antialiased edges, and shadows, more naturally than an all-or-nothing color key.

Matting is still an estimate based on image evidence and the method used. It can struggle when the subject and background are difficult to distinguish, and the cited academic work describes one approach rather than every available matting method. Its distinction from manual keying is useful, but it does not establish that matting will always produce a better result.

A color key is a color-matching rule, not an understanding of the scene. If a visible subject pixel is close to the selected key color, the rule may make it transparent and create a hole. If a boundary pixel mixes foreground color with the background color, it may not match the key exactly, so it stays partly visible and forms a fringe.
PNG stores color samples separately from alpha, using unassociated (non-premultiplied) alpha. As a result, a pixel with zero opacity can still have RGB color values. The PNG 1.0 specification’s alpha representation section describes this property. If edge pixels were created against a colored matte, their RGB samples can retain that color; when resampled or composited over a different background, the leftover color may appear as a halo. This is a practical edge-processing effect, not a special background embedded in the PNG.

A reliable workflow for a clean transparent PNG
- Choose a method that fits the image. Start with a color key for a uniform, distinct background; use a mask when predictable color, brightness, or location separates background from subject; consider segmentation with matting for complex contours or soft edges.
- Inspect for color overlap. Check whether the subject contains colors similar to the background. With a key, adjust the tolerance cautiously: a wider match can remove more fringe but can also erase subject detail.
- Review the boundary, not just the interior. Look closely at hair, shadows, fine edges, and translucent-looking areas. These are where a binary mask or imperfect key is most likely to look harsh or leave background color behind.
- Preview against both light and dark backgrounds. A fringe that blends into one preview can stand out against another. Check whether the boundary is too hard, retains the old background color, or has holes.
- Export in a transparency-capable format. Save as PNG and ensure the editor preserves the mask or alpha channel. A PNG can still be fully opaque if transparency was discarded or flattened before export.
