You can move Mailchimp contacts and reuse many email designs in Benchmark Email, but there is no one-click migration. Export contacts, keep each subscription status separate, map fields during import, and transfer designs as HTML rather than assuming native templates will remain editable. Mailchimp and Benchmark describe important limits: automations, drafts, and past reports do not transfer automatically, so save records and plan rebuilds before switching.
What transfers—and what needs separate work
Benchmark’s migration article, published October 6, 2026, says there is no one-click import from Mailchimp: contacts require a CSV upload and templates require copying and pasting. The article is vendor-authored by Jessica Lunk, Benchmark’s VP of Growth Marketing, so treat its product instructions as Benchmark’s description of its workflow and confirm current interface labels before acting.

| Mailchimp item | What to expect | Migration action |
|---|---|---|
| Contact fields | Mailchimp contact exports include audience fields; Benchmark supports file import and field mapping. | Map fields and review import exceptions. |
| Subscription status | Mailchimp can provide separate files for subscribed, non-subscribed, unsubscribed, and cleaned contacts. Benchmark’s migration instructions say to import unsubscribed contacts separately with that status. | Preserve each status; never upload opt-outs as active subscribers. |
| Sent email designs | Benchmark describes copying sent-campaign HTML into its Custom HTML editor. | Test appearance and links; this is HTML transfer, not an automatic native-template migration. |
| Draft designs | Benchmark says drafts do not expose the HTML route described in its instructions. | Retrieve or rebuild designs before leaving Mailchimp; verify the current interface. |
| Drag-and-drop editing | Mailchimp warns that importing HTML in its account-combining workflow loses drag-and-drop blocks. | Separate visual/code portability from native builder editability. |
| Automations | Benchmark says automations do not transfer. | Inventory and rebuild or replace them. |
| Reports and engagement history | Mailchimp says campaign reports and audience statistics cannot be imported during account combining; Benchmark says past reports do not transfer in this migration. | Save records you need before leaving the source account. |
| Forms and connected content | Mailchimp’s account export excludes website and landing-page content; Benchmark recommends replacing signup forms. | Audit embedded forms, integrations, and links separately. |
1. Inventory your Mailchimp account
Before exporting, list the assets the team actually depends on. Mailchimp offers contact-level exports and an account-data export; the latter may include audiences, templates, campaign email content, reports, and other listed data. It does not include deleted audiences or certain content such as websites, landing pages, and ads, and third-party information is also outside the described export.

- Sent campaigns and templates worth reusing, plus drafts whose design code you may need.
- Automations, signup forms, integrations, and website or landing-page placements that must be rebuilt or updated.
- Reports and audience statistics the business must retain for analysis, compliance, or internal records.
Do not assume one export contains every operational asset. Mailchimp’s account export and contact export serve different purposes, and contact exports do not include email report data such as opens and clicks.

2. Export contacts and preserve their status
Use Mailchimp’s audience/contact export and keep the resulting status files separate. Mailchimp’s export documentation describes separate CSVs for subscribed, non-subscribed, unsubscribed, and cleaned contacts, along with audience fields and some marketing-permission and opt-in information. Mailchimp warns that importing a file with the wrong status can accidentally make an unsubscribed contact subscribed.
Mailchimp says exported files and export history remain available in the account for 30 days. Download the files promptly and store them securely. Export reports separately if you need engagement history.

3. Import the CSVs and map fields in Benchmark
- Choose the destination list. Benchmark’s migration instructions recommend importing the subscribed CSV into the intended list. Decide how Mailchimp audiences should map to Benchmark lists, tags, or custom fields before uploading.
- Upload the subscriber file. Benchmark’s help documentation describes uploading a supported file and mapping its columns. An email-address field is required. Map names and custom fields to the right destination fields rather than accepting mismatched defaults.
- Import opt-outs separately. Import the unsubscribed file as unsubscribed, not as active subscribers. Keep non-subscribed and cleaned records distinct as appropriate to your contact policy and Benchmark’s current import options; do not infer consent from a record’s presence in a CSV.
- Check the import report. Review skipped rows, invalid addresses, and field-mapping results. Correct errors in the source file or mapping and re-import only after checking that doing so will not duplicate or change contact status.
If you have several Mailchimp audiences, Benchmark suggests consolidating them into fewer lists and tagging imported contacts by origin or audience. That is a vendor workflow suggestion, not a rule: preserve separate groups wherever they matter for permissions, targeting, or reporting.

4. Transfer designs without assuming they stay editable
Sent campaigns
Benchmark’s migration article describes copying HTML from a sent Mailchimp campaign and pasting it into Benchmark’s Custom HTML editor. Mailchimp’s account export can include HTML files for templates and campaign content. The HTML may preserve a design’s appearance, but that does not mean the original drag-and-drop structure or editing controls will come with it. Mailchimp makes the same distinction in its account-combining guidance: directly importing HTML loses drag-and-drop content blocks.

Drafts and native templates
Benchmark says drafts do not expose the HTML route described for sent campaigns. If a draft is important, retrieve its code through an available Mailchimp method or rebuild it while you still have access. Do not treat this process as a guaranteed one-click or native-template transfer.
Footer and unsubscribe handling
Benchmark’s migration article advises removing the old Mailchimp footer and unsubscribe block from copied code because Benchmark says it adds its own footer. Confirm the current behavior in Benchmark before changing the HTML, and verify that the resulting message includes the destination’s required unsubscribe functionality. Never remove an unsubscribe path without confirming an operative replacement.

Benchmark’s migration guidance says automations, drafts, and past reports do not transfer. Recreate automation logic in the destination and verify triggers, timing, audience rules, and message content before enabling it. Replace Mailchimp signup forms on websites and other placements, and reconnect any integrations that depend on the old account.

What to verify before choosing a Benchmark plan
Benchmark’s October 6, 2026 migration article states that its Free plan covers up to 500 contacts and 2,500 emails a month. Those are vendor-stated plan limits as of that article’s publication, not an independent measurement; check Benchmark’s current plan details before relying on them, since limits can change.
