MagSafe vs. Qi2 vs. Qi: Which Wireless Charger Should You Buy?

Standard Qi suits basic wireless charging; MagSafe and Qi2 MPP add magnetic alignment. Check your phone, charger profile, certification and adapter before buying.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on the phone you own and whether you want magnetic alignment. A certified standard Qi charger is a sensible basic choice; MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic charging system; and Qi2 includes both magnetic and non-magnetic profiles. If you want a Qi2 charger to attach magnetically, confirm it supports the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP)—the Qi2 name alone does not guarantee magnets.

What MagSafe, Qi2 and Qi mean

Standard Qi: broad, basic compatibility

Qi is the Wireless Power Consortium’s (WPC) wireless-charging standard. Apple says iPhone 8 and later can use Qi-certified chargers. Many Qi chargers charge iPhone at up to 7.5 watts, though performance varies by charger. That makes certified Qi a practical option when you want ordinary wireless charging rather than magnetic attachment or a higher supported rate. Apple’s iPhone wireless-charging guidance explains compatibility.

Qi2: two profiles, not one magnetic promise

WPC introduced Qi2 in 2023 with two profiles: the Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), which enables magnetic alignment and is based on MagSafe technology Apple contributed to WPC, and the non-magnetic Enhanced Power Profile (EPP), an enhancement to earlier Qi charging. So, if magnetic attachment matters, check that the specific Qi2 charger uses MPP and verify its certification. WPC’s Qi2 overview describes the profiles.

MagSafe: Apple’s magnetic charging system

MagSafe provides magnetic alignment for compatible iPhones and chargers. Apple’s published peak rates depend on the iPhone model, charger and power adapter; the MagSafe label alone does not tell you what rate your particular setup will reach. A WPC record for Apple’s MagSafe Charger lists MPP, version 2.0.1, potential load power of 15 watts and certification dated September 9, 2024. Apple’s MagSafe charging guidance sets out its model and adapter conditions.

MagSafe Yes, for compatible Apple devices and accessories Your iPhone model, charger and required adapter Compatible iPhone owners who want Apple’s magnetic charging system

Do not treat charger wattage as a guaranteed phone speed

Wattage figures describe capability or a model-specific peak under stated conditions, not a universal charging rate or a promise about charging time. WPC described original Qi2 as 15 watts at its 2023 launch. In July 2025, it announced Qi2 25W for Qi v2.2.1, calling it nearly 70% more power than original Qi2. Those are WPC’s standards-level figures; they do not establish how quickly every phone will charge. WPC’s Qi2 overview and its July 23, 2025 Qi2 25W announcement provide the launch details.

Apple’s MagSafe specifications illustrate why the phone and adapter matter. Its support page, published March 31, 2026, lists up to 25 watts peak for iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, iPhone 16 Plus, and iPhone 16 Pro Max when paired with a qualifying MagSafe Charger and a 30-watt-or-higher adapter meeting Apple’s specified output. The same page lists up to 20 watts for iPhone Air; 22.5 watts for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro; and 15 watts for iPhone 17e and iPhone 15 and earlier under the specified charger and adapter conditions. Apple says actual power varies with model, adapter wattage and system conditions. These are Apple’s published peak specifications, not independently measured charging times. Check Apple’s current MagSafe guidance for the precise setup requirements.

Certification records can also show support for a newer profile on a particular device: WPC lists iPhone 17 as Qi v2.2.1, profile MPP25, with a 25-watt maximum load power and certification dated February 5, 2026. That record is a dated example, not a substitute for checking the current record and manufacturer guidance for your exact phone. WPC’s certified product database is searchable.

Which charger should you buy?

Choose certified standard Qi for straightforward charging

If you do not need a magnetic hold, stand-style alignment or a higher phone-supported rate, a certified Qi pad can be enough. For iPhone, Apple says iPhone 8 and later support Qi-certified chargers. Check the specific charger’s certification and your phone’s compatibility rather than assuming every product sold as a wireless charger performs alike.

Choose MagSafe for Apple’s magnetic system

If you have a compatible iPhone and want a charger designed for Apple’s magnetic alignment, choose a MagSafe charger. For the highest published peak rate available to your model, follow Apple’s instructions for the charger and adapter together; a higher-wattage adapter by itself does not make every iPhone charge at the same peak.

Choose Qi2 when the exact phone and charger match

Qi2 can be the right choice when both phone and charger support the profile you want. For magnetic attachment, look for MPP in the product’s certification details and confirm that your phone and case combination supports the alignment. Do not assume every Qi2 product is magnetic or that a charger’s maximum wattage will be delivered to your phone.

How to verify a charger before buying

  1. Identify your exact phone model. Find its supported wireless-charging standard and model-specific peak rate in the manufacturer’s current guidance. Do not rely on a family name alone.
  2. Decide whether you need magnets. If yes, verify that the phone, case and charger support compatible magnetic alignment. For Qi2, specifically check for MPP.
  3. Check the charger’s certification. Search the exact model in the WPC certified product database. WPC says certified products receive an ID and appear there; a broad retailer label is not as specific as a matching model record.
  4. Confirm the adapter requirements. Check the charger’s included accessories and the phone maker’s required adapter wattage and output. This is especially important if you are buying MagSafe to reach a stated peak rate.
  5. Match the purchase to your use. Pick basic Qi for ordinary charging, or a verified magnetic option if attachment or charging on a stand is a feature you will use.

What the available specifications do—and do not—show

The published standards and compatibility information establish profile distinctions, selected certification records and stated peak-power conditions. They do not provide a controlled independent comparison of charging time, heat or energy use across representative Qi, Qi2 and MagSafe chargers and phones. It would therefore be misleading to call one standard universally fastest or most efficient based only on nominal wattage.
