A safer approach is to identify harmful request patterns, apply controls at the layer that can handle them, and observe the effect before blocking traffic. Use Magento’s CAPTCHA options for relevant customer and Admin actions, and evaluate your host, proxy, CDN, or web application firewall (WAF) for traffic controls at the edge. Keep legitimate search and customer traffic in view as you tune those defenses.
Start by identifying the behavior you need to stop
Not every automated visit is abuse. Search engines and social platforms may crawl pages for legitimate purposes; other automation may retrieve catalog data at high volume, repeatedly hit an endpoint, attempt account credentials, or contribute to load that makes the store slower for shoppers. The right response depends on the behavior and the resource it affects.

Do not classify traffic as malicious solely because a user-agent string says “bot” or names a familiar crawler. User-agent values can be spoofed, including to impersonate good bots. Adobe’s bot-observation guidance recommends looking at indicators such as IP addresses, request volume, errors, and non-cached requests when investigating bot activity.
Before changing controls, identify what you are trying to protect: storefront availability, a particular route or API, customer accounts, Admin access, or catalog data. This keeps a defense aimed at the relevant traffic rather than imposing unnecessary friction across the whole store.

Choose controls that fit your deployment
These controls operate at different points. Magento CAPTCHA addresses selected interactions; traffic filtering and rate limits usually belong at the hosting, proxy, CDN, or WAF boundary. Adobe Commerce Advanced Security is a separate, narrowly scoped option for Adobe Commerce on Cloud Infrastructure PaaS, not a feature to assume is available on a self-hosted installation.

Use Magento CAPTCHA for the interactions it covers
Adobe documents both standard CAPTCHA and Google reCAPTCHA support for Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce. CAPTCHA can be applied to Admin and storefront actions. In the Admin context, the documented options include sign-in and forgot-password forms; CAPTCHA display can be set to appear every time or after a threshold of failed attempts. Storefront use can cover customer actions such as login.
Check the documentation for your Magento version, installed modules, and current configuration before relying on a specific form being protected. A CAPTCHA on sign-in or another selected action does not automatically protect every storefront form, API, or product page. It can add friction to automated interaction at a covered point, but it should not be treated as a complete defense against catalog retrieval.
Adobe’s broader Commerce security guidance also recommends CAPTCHA or reCAPTCHA and Security Scans for each installation domain. Treat those as security hygiene alongside traffic monitoring, not as proof that scraping or other abusive automation has been stopped.
Put traffic limits at the boundary that sees the requests
For a self-hosted store, assess the controls offered by the hosting provider and by any reverse proxy, CDN, or WAF in front of the origin. The useful question is not simply whether a product advertises “bot protection,” but whether it can apply an appropriate action to the routes and request patterns you need to protect, while allowing the traffic your store needs.
For each candidate service, verify deployment compatibility with your origin and architecture, route- or API-level rate limiting, bot identification methods, available monitor, allow, challenge, and block actions, investigation logs, exception tuning, operational access and support, and current pricing. These are evaluation criteria, not a universal vendor ranking: capabilities and implementation details vary, so confirm them with the provider’s current documentation.
Adobe’s Advanced Security page is a useful example of managed edge capabilities, but its scope is Adobe Commerce on Cloud Infrastructure PaaS. It does not establish that those controls are included with self-hosted Adobe Commerce or Magento Open Source, nor that the same configuration is available in another provider’s service.

Where AWS WAF Bot Control fits
AWS documents Bot Control as a managed rule group for AWS WAF. Its documentation describes common bot detection and targeted inspection for bots that do not identify themselves, with techniques that can include rate limiting, CAPTCHA, browser challenges, fingerprinting, and behavior heuristics. These are AWS-specific capabilities; they do not automatically apply to other WAF products or architectures. Check the current AWS WAF Bot Control documentation, rule version, deployment fit, and pricing for your environment.

Use the logs and monitoring available in your deployment to establish what ordinary traffic looks like before tightening rules. Where the data permits, compare requests by IP, route, status code, cache behavior, timing, and authenticated state. Check whether a burst is concentrated on a particular path, whether responses are errors or successful retrievals, and whether the behavior coincides with customer impact.

Investigate claimed legitimate crawlers rather than trusting their names in user-agent fields. Adobe’s bot guidance describes correlating bot labels with IPs, request counts, and error patterns, and notes the risk of spoofed user-agent values. Confirm a crawler through its published identity-verification method before allowing it broadly.
For a third-party managed rule set, start in a non-production environment when possible. On production traffic, use a count or monitor mode first if the service supports it; inspect matches and identify desired traffic that needs an exception before enabling a blocking action. AWS specifically recommends testing and tuning Bot Control in staging or testing, then assessing potential traffic impact and monitoring matches before production enforcement. Its guidance is useful as a deployment principle, but AWS rule behavior and costs should not be generalized to other WAFs. See AWS guidance for testing and deploying Bot Control.
- Record the intended outcome. Name the route, behavior, or asset to protect and the user impact you are trying to prevent.
- Observe before changing policy. Capture a representative baseline using the logs and monitoring your stack provides.
- Test rules without blocking. Use staging or count/monitor mode where available, then examine actual matches and response patterns.
- Make narrow exceptions. Allow verified legitimate traffic only as broadly as required; do not use an unverified bot label as the sole basis.
- Enforce incrementally and review. Apply the least disruptive effective action, then watch for false positives, errors, and changes in shopper-facing performance.
When a rule causes trouble, adjust the scope
If legitimate traffic is challenged or blocked, use the rule’s logs to identify the matching route and condition. Narrow the rule or adjust an exception for traffic you have verified, then repeat the observation step before expanding enforcement. Avoid a broad allow rule based only on a claimed crawler name, since that value can be spoofed.
If abusive requests continue, check whether the control is in the request path and whether it covers the route being targeted. A rule that protects a login interaction will not necessarily affect product-page retrieval; a control at the edge may also behave differently depending on how your origin and proxy are configured. Tune the layer that sees the traffic in question rather than assuming one setting covers every path.
