The molecule is a boron–nitrogen zwitterion reported in 2018: its six-membered framework contains four boron atoms and two nitrogen atoms, and its distorted shape allows an unusual bonding interaction between boron atoms. It is described as a benzene valence-isomer mimic—not as ordinary benzene or a carbon-based benzene isomer.
What is the molecule, and why is it called a benzene mimic?
The 2018 report describes a molecule with a ring framework of four boron and two nitrogen atoms. Unlike flat benzene, this B/N ring is highly distorted. The reported electronic feature is a four-centre, two-electron interaction involving opposing boron π orbitals, described as a σ-type interaction. In other words, electron density is shared across more than one pair of atoms in a way that gives the framework an unusual bonding pattern.

“Mimic” signals a structural and electronic analogy. It does not mean the molecule is made of carbon, has benzene’s formula, or behaves identically to benzene. The title-specific account appeared in Chemistry World on 8 October 2018; it identifies the underlying paper as B. Su et al., Journal of the American Chemical Society (2018), DOI 10.1021/jacs.8b08025.
How does it relate to benzene valence isomers?
A valence isomer has the same overall atoms as a reference molecule but a different arrangement of bonds. Benzene is the most thermodynamically stable C6H6 structure discussed in a 2020 review by Kei Ota and Rei Kinjo. The review identifies three synthesized carbon-based benzene valence isomers: prismane, Dewar benzene, and benzvalene. Replacing atoms in these carbon frameworks with other elements can produce inorganic analogues, whose geometry and bonding need not match the carbon compounds.
#1 Best Overall
- Made of durable and colorful plastic
- Molecular geometry and bond angles can be visibly seen in the structure, making it great for studying
- Excellent molecular model kit for students studying chemistry in middle school or university
- A visual representation of molecular structures of common compounds and substances
- These unique molecular structures are excellent for visual display
Ota and Kinjo’s 2020 review reports more than 200 computationally proposed C6H6 isomers and more than 30 experimentally characterized inorganic benzene and valence-isomer examples as of its publication. These are review-era counts, not current totals. See the review’s abstract and publication details.
How was the 2018 B/N compound prepared and stabilized?
According to Chemistry World’s account, the team reduced a substituted diazatetraborinane using potassium carbide and used a crown ether to stabilize potassium counterions. The reported crystals contained dimeric units: two B–N rings, two potassium atoms, and a tetrahydrofuran solvent molecule. Those details describe the crystalline material reported in the article; they should not be taken to mean that the isolated structure is simply a free-standing ring without associated ions or solvent.

Is it the same as the 2021 P3N3 benzene analogue?
No. A separate 2021 Nature Communications study concerned a phosphorus–nitrogen species, P3N3, rather than the 2018 boron–nitrogen zwitterion. The paper reports a prismatic P3N3 species generated in electron-irradiated phosphine–nitrogen ices and its isomer-selective photochemical conversion at 547 nm into a Dewar-benzene-like P3N3 structure. It is related context for inorganic benzene analogues, not another name or later form of the 2018 compound. The study is described in Nature Communications.

What the analogy does—and does not—establish
- It establishes a notable bonding motif: the 2018 report describes a distorted B/N ring with a four-centre, two-electron interaction involving opposing boron π orbitals.
- It does not establish identity with benzene: the atoms, geometry, and bonding description differ from carbon-based benzene and its valence isomers.
- It does not provide a stability ranking: the cited accounts do not support a quantitative comparison of stability among the B/N molecule, carbon valence isomers, and other inorganic analogues.
