Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia II: Definitive Edition are two different stories—and they do not have equivalent PS5 releases. The first is a remake with a PS5 version that 2K says runs at 60 FPS; the second is a PS4 remaster that PlayStation lists as playable on PS5, with a compatibility caveat. Choose between them primarily by story and setting, not by assuming they share the same upgrade.
At a glance: remake, remaster, and PS5 status
| Game | Story and setting | What “Definitive Edition” means here | PS5 status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mafia: Definitive Edition | Tommy Angelo’s rise from cabdriver to mob associate in 1930s Lost Heaven. | A faithful, expanded remake inspired by the 2002 original. | A PS5 version launched August 14, 2026. 2K describes 60 FPS gameplay, improved loading times, and fixes to some legacy issues. |
| Mafia II: Definitive Edition | Vito Scaletta’s postwar story in 1940s–50s Empire Bay. | An HD remaster of the second game, packaged with its DLC. | PlayStation’s US listing identifies it as a PS4 game playable on PS5 and notes that some PS4 features may be absent. The official sources reviewed do not describe a corresponding native PS5 upgrade or publish a frame-rate figure. |
The distinction is practical: the first game has a specifically announced PS5 version, while the second is presented as PS4 software with PS5 compatibility. PlayStation’s US product pages list the platforms and compatibility details for Mafia: Definitive Edition and Mafia II: Definitive Edition.

Which story do you want to play?
Mafia: Definitive Edition: Prohibition-era Lost Heaven
PlayStation describes Tommy Angelo as a hardworking cabdriver who becomes entangled with the Salieri crime organization. The story is set in Lost Heaven circa 1930, giving the game a Prohibition-era backdrop and an origin-story perspective on the series’ criminal world. Its remake status means this is not simply the original 2002 game with a higher-resolution presentation: it is a rebuilt, expanded take on that story.

Mafia II: Definitive Edition: postwar Empire Bay
Vito Scaletta returns from war to find himself drawn into organized crime as he tries to deal with his father’s debts; his friend Joe is part of the story. The setting moves forward to post-World War II Empire Bay, across the 1940s and 1950s. That makes it the natural pick if you want the sequel’s later era and a different protagonist rather than Tommy’s earlier story. PlayStation’s Mafia: Trilogy overview places the two games in that broader timeline.

What changes on PS5?
Mafia: Definitive Edition has an announced PS5 version
2K Support announced that the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release arrived on August 14, 2026, describing it as the same 2020 game with “60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements.” The announcement also names improved loading times and fixes to some legacy issues. Treat 60 FPS as a publisher-stated feature, not as a result from an independent side-by-side test. The PS5 listing also identifies DualSense vibration and adaptive trigger support, offline play, one-player play, and PS5 Pro Enhanced status.
Mafia II: Definitive Edition runs through PS5 compatibility
PlayStation’s US page lists Mafia II: Definitive Edition as a PS4 title playable on PS5 and cautions that some PS4 features may be absent. The official sources cited here do not document a native PS5 version or give a publisher-announced frame-rate figure for it. That source distinction is enough to say the releases are not presented on equal terms; it is not proof that no later update could exist.

- Soundscapes From the Void - Original soundtrack by mimic and guests. Branching dialogues and decisions that shape how the story plays out

There is no controlled same-console comparison in these sources for image quality, bugs, or performance across the two games. In particular, the 60 FPS claim for Mafia: Definitive Edition should not be turned into an unsupported claim that it is visibly or technically superior in every respect.

PlayStation says Mafia II: Definitive Edition includes the main game and all DLC releases. That makes the package a complete way to get the second game’s listed story content. The cited listing does not provide a comparable DLC bundle claim for Mafia: Definitive Edition, so the two packages should not be assumed to have matching included content.

For players who want the series together physically, Take-Two announced a physical Mafia: Trilogy edition, and PlayStation’s overview covers the three entries. This establishes that a physical edition existed; it does not establish current retail stock or that its disc provides native PS5 copies of both games.
Can an existing PS4 copy of the first game upgrade to PS5?
According to 2K Support’s announcement, owners of a physical or digital PS4 copy of Mafia: Definitive Edition—either standalone or through the Trilogy—who bought it before August 14, 2026, received the digital PS5 version for free. That cutoff is historical, not a current free-upgrade offer for new purchases. The stated offer applies to Mafia: Definitive Edition; it should not be extended to Mafia II: Definitive Edition.

An all-star cast of iconic characters face off in four to six-player deathmatch battles in classic locations.

- Popular Features Return – Recognizable features return Resident Evil Village that nod to previous Resident Evil titles, such as “The Duke,” a merchant who allows players to buy and sell items, purchase recipes for crafting, and customize weapons.
- The Story Continues – “Shadows of Rose” resumes the Winters family saga 16 years after the events of Resident Evil Village. The expansion’s new tale follows Rose Winters, the daughter of main protagonist Ethan, as she struggles with her terrifying powers. Explore the warped and twisted world inside the consciousness of the Megamycete in search of a cure.
Which one should you choose?
- Pick Mafia: Definitive Edition for Tommy Angelo’s 1930s origin story and the specifically announced PS5 version, including 2K’s 60 FPS gameplay claim and loading-time improvements.
- Pick Mafia II: Definitive Edition for Vito Scaletta’s postwar story, Empire Bay, and a package PlayStation says includes the main game and all DLC. It is listed as PS4 software playable on PS5.
- Play both in story order if you want the series’ timeline to move from 1930s Lost Heaven to 1940s–50s Empire Bay. They are separate stories, so your preference for era and protagonist is a sound basis for choosing where to start.
For platform specifics, see 2K Support’s PS5 and Xbox Series X|S announcement, PlayStation’s first-game listing and second-game listing, and Take-Two’s announcement of the physical Trilogy edition.
