How to Size a Battery Backup System for a Telecom Tower

A practical method for estimating telecom tower battery capacity—and checking the battery, discharge limits and recharge system against real site conditions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Size a telecom tower battery bank from the critical site load and the required time without dependable recharge or generator support. Calculate the energy for that interval, convert it to amp-hours at the actual DC bus voltage, then verify the result against the selected battery’s discharge data and site conditions. The first calculation is a starting point—not a final battery specification.

What information do you need before sizing the bank?

Collect these inputs from site records, equipment measurements, operator requirements and current battery documentation. A guessed load or an assumed autonomy period can make an otherwise correct calculation unsuitable.

  • Critical load: Identify every load that must stay powered, including radios or base-station equipment, transmission, control, monitoring and necessary site auxiliaries. Separate DC loads from AC loads. If AC equipment draws from the battery through an inverter, include the inverter’s losses.
  • Required autonomy: Set the time the bank must carry the critical load before dependable recharge or generator support. Base it on local outages, service requirements, generator start-up and refueling or repair arrangements, and the expected recharge window. For solar hybrids, consider the no-sun interval and local weather pattern.
  • Battery bus and system limits: Confirm the nominal DC bus voltage, permitted operating-voltage range, rectifier arrangement, alarms, battery-management system (BMS), disconnects and cable limits using the site’s actual documentation. Do not treat a voltage used in another site’s example as a tower-wide standard.
  • Battery performance and operating conditions: Obtain the battery’s discharge curves for the relevant current or constant-power load, cutoff voltage and temperature. Establish the permitted depth of discharge, end-of-life capacity criterion and operator reserve. Account for aging, cell imbalance and any other site-specific constraints using product data, not a generic percentage.
  • Recharge capability: Find out how much the rectifier or hybrid charger can supply while serving the live load, and how much time is available to recharge the bank. Include generator capacity and operating constraints where applicable.
  • Installation and lifecycle constraints: Compare chemistry, cycle life, charge acceptance, temperature limits, thermal-management needs, safety, maintenance, footprint, weight and lifecycle cost.

Vertiv’s article on hybrid-system design identifies load, grid availability, autonomy, cyclic life, depth of discharge, partial-state-of-charge acceptance, working environment and thermal management as relevant design factors. These determine what battery is suitable; they do not establish universal derating percentages.

How do you calculate the first-pass battery capacity?

  1. Calculate the energy required during the outage: Required energy (kWh) = critical load (kW) × autonomy (hours). Use the load the bank must actually support for the stated interval.
  2. Convert energy to nominal amp-hours at the battery bus: Nominal DC capacity (Ah) ≈ required energy (Wh) ÷ nominal DC bus voltage (V). Convert kWh to Wh before dividing.
  3. Refine the candidate using manufacturer data: Check the chosen battery’s constant-power or constant-current discharge data at the site’s relevant load, minimum operating voltage, temperature and specified end-of-life condition. Apply permitted discharge limits, system losses and any justified reserve.
  4. Check recharge and system compatibility: Confirm that the charging source, battery interface and site protection equipment support the proposed bank and required recovery time.

The amp-hour conversion is only a nominal-energy estimate. The battery may deliver less usable energy at the actual discharge rate, cutoff voltage or temperature, and a design that relies on more discharge than the manufacturer permits is not acceptable just because the arithmetic works.

Worked example: what does a 3 kW load for eight hours imply?

The energy calculation is 3 kW × 8 h = 24 kWh. At a 48 V nominal DC bus, the uncorrected conversion is 24,000 Wh ÷ 48 V = 500 Ah. That 500 Ah figure is a mathematical baseline before discharge limits, losses, aging, temperature, discharge-rate effects or reserve are considered; it is not a recommended bank size.

Intelligent Energy Limited’s 2013 report, hosted by GSMA, describes a modeled outdoor telecom-site case with a 3 kW load, eight hours per day of grid outage, 24 kWh per day of backup energy and 48 V battery output. In the report’s solar scenario—with four average sunshine hours and an assumed 30% daily battery depth of discharge—it calculates 1,720 Ah at 48 V and accounts for losses in the solar-energy calculation. That is a scenario-specific result, not a direct correction to apply to the 500 Ah baseline or a universal tower-sizing rule.

How do discharge limits and site conditions change the result?

Depth of discharge and end-of-life capacity

Usable capacity depends on the battery’s permitted discharge and on the capacity criterion used for the design’s end of life. Size against the selected manufacturer’s data and the operator’s requirement for usable capacity at that point—not just a new battery’s nominal rating. Avoid applying a single depth-of-discharge multiplier without checking the battery design and warranty or operating limits.

Temperature, aging and discharge rate

Temperature, state of charge, cycle history and age affect battery output. The discharge curve must match the expected operating temperature, current or power demand and cutoff voltage. If actual site conditions differ from the conditions in a product’s published rating, resolve the difference using manufacturer guidance. The available sources do not provide a universal temperature derating table.

Losses and AC loads

Include losses from power conversion when AC loads share a DC-backed system. Use the efficiency and operating data for the actual inverter or conversion equipment; do not assume every load is delivered from the battery at 100% efficiency. Distinguish energy needed by the load from battery energy required to supply it.

Reserve and operational uncertainty

Any reserve should reflect the operator’s requirements and identified site risks, such as uncertain load growth or recovery time. Document its basis separately from battery aging, discharge limits and conversion losses so that the same allowance is not counted twice.

Can the charger recharge the bank quickly enough?

A bank that can carry the outage may still be a poor design if the charging system cannot restore it before the next outage. Check the rectifier or hybrid charger’s available output after accounting for the live site load, then confirm that the remaining capacity and allowed recharge interval suit the selected battery. Verify generator output and operating constraints if the generator is part of the recovery plan.

Vertiv’s 2017 article, “Factors to Consider for an Optimal Mix of Energy Sources in a Hybrid Solution,” defines autonomy as the number of hours per day a battery system powers the given load without needing recharge from solar panels or another energy source. It also notes that greater autonomy can increase required rectifier-module and generator capacity. In practice, autonomy is therefore a battery-and-recharge-system decision, not just an amp-hour target.

When should you compare batteries or other backup sources?

Compare candidate batteries using discharge performance at the actual load and minimum voltage, usable energy, depth-of-discharge limits, cycle life and end-of-life capacity. Also assess charge acceptance—including behavior at partial state of charge—temperature range, safety, maintenance, footprint, weight and lifecycle cost. The available sources do not establish a universally preferred chemistry or a universal number of backup hours at which a tower should switch to another architecture.

Battery-only backup can suit a defined outage window. For longer interruptions, a generator or fuel-cell system may be part of the design, depending on fuel logistics, maintenance, local constraints and lifecycle economics. A solar hybrid also depends on solar resource and weather, as well as storage and charging capability. Compare options against the site’s outage and recovery profile rather than relying on a generic duration threshold.

As one product-family example, Vertiv’s Duration product page lists VRLA batteries for telecom standby applications, including 12 V models from 40 Ah to 200 Ah. The page also makes a 10-year operational-life claim at 25°C for the Duration VRLA family. That is a manufacturer claim for that product family, not a life expectancy for every battery or operating condition. A listed capacity or product category alone does not establish suitability for a tower; check discharge curves, string configuration, dimensions, connections, warranty and environmental conditions.

What should the final specification and verification cover?

Document the assumptions so that another engineer can reproduce the sizing and compare it with the installed system. For an actual project, verify the design against current product datasheets, site measurements, operator requirements and applicable local electrical, fire and environmental rules.

  • Critical loads, including which are DC and which use an inverter.
  • Required autonomy and the outage, generator and recharge assumptions behind it.
  • Battery-bus voltage, system voltage window and discharge cutoff.
  • Selected battery model and manufacturer discharge data for the relevant load, temperature and end-of-life condition.
  • Permitted depth of discharge, capacity-aging basis, losses and reserve, each stated separately.
  • Charging-source capacity available after serving the live load, plus the allowed recharge time.
  • Battery protection, disconnects, monitoring or BMS, alarms, cabling and physical installation constraints.
  • Applicable tests, safety requirements and commissioning checks.

ITU-T Recommendation L.1221 (11/2018) covers topics including stationary-battery tests, backup testing, stress and protection alarms, BMS/BMU requirements, and implementation examples for telecom and ICT sites. Use the applicable full edition and local requirements for project decisions; a contents listing alone is not a substitute for standards review or jurisdictional approval.
