A red or full-looking partition in Macrium Reflect is not, by itself, proof that Windows is broken or that the partition needs resizing. If the partition is Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), check Windows’ recovery status and any relevant update or servicing error before changing its size. The forum explanation attached to this display is anecdotal; the available Macrium material does not establish what the indicator means or how Reflect calculates it.
What does a full-looking partition in Reflect mean?
The matching discussion describes a red bar on what the poster believed was partition 4, the recovery partition. Disk Management showed that partition as 100% free. A forum respondent suggested that this was normal for a recovery partition, but that comment is not an official explanation from Macrium and does not verify the poster’s screenshot or diagnosis. The discussion does not establish Reflect’s color threshold, space calculation, or the version involved.

Macrium’s available knowledge-base material covers partition properties and resizing during clone or restore work, but it does not explain this particular red/full indicator. Treat the visual display as a reason to identify the partition and check for an actual Windows problem—not as a diagnosis on its own.

How to decide whether you need to act
If there is only a red bar
Confirm which partition Reflect is showing and compare it with Windows Disk Management. A full-looking display alone does not demonstrate a WinRE servicing failure. Do not resize a partition solely to change the appearance of the bar.

If Windows reports a WinRE servicing failure or an update cannot install
Microsoft says insufficient free space in the recovery partition can cause some WinRE servicing failures. That is a different situation from a visual indicator with no reported Windows error. Check the exact Windows update or servicing message and whether the recovery partition meets the requirement for that issue.
If you are considering resizing
Microsoft’s KB5028997 guidance is a manual procedure for a specific WinRE partition-resizing scenario. Its applicability depends on the Windows version and partition layout; the documented scenario requires the recovery partition to be after the operating-system partition. The procedure changes the disk layout and includes disabling and re-enabling WinRE, so do not apply its commands as a generic fix for a red bar. Read Microsoft’s KB5028997 instructions and proceed only if your system fits their stated scope.

Do not treat 250 MB as a universal target
Microsoft’s July 16, 2026 notice for the Windows 10 21H2 and 22H2 WinRE update KB5120221 says that the update requires 250 MB of free space in the recovery partition to install successfully. That figure is for that named update, not a general recommendation for every recovery partition. Microsoft’s KB5028997 procedure also describes a 250 MB manual resize for its specific scenario; it should not be generalized to other layouts or problems. See the KB5120221 update notice for its stated requirement.

Practical checks before changing the disk
- Identify the partition in Reflect and verify whether it is the Windows recovery partition rather than assuming its role from its position or color.
- Check Windows for a WinRE servicing error or a specific update failure. Without one, the Reflect display alone does not establish a need to resize.
- Compare your Windows version and partition order with Microsoft’s instructions before following a resize procedure.
- Avoid partition-resizing commands copied from a forum unless you have confirmed they apply to your exact layout; an incorrect change can affect recovery configuration.
The ElevenForum thread that matches this issue also discusses resizing recovery and EFI partitions, and the original poster later reported completing partition work. It does not show that the red bar itself required those changes. The discussion is useful as a report of one user’s experience, not as an authoritative partition-management guide. Macrium’s related material on partition properties likewise does not define the indicator described in the thread.
