Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When a Macrium Reflect backup fails, open its log before changing Windows settings or retrying. Record the exact error code and the last operation that completed: a failure while creating a snapshot points to a different problem than an unreadable source disk, a destination write error, or a failed verification. The log and, for VSS errors, Windows event details help identify which path to follow.
Start with the failed backup log
- In Reflect, open the failed operation’s log. Macrium’s Reflect X log guide explains that each Reflect action creates a log and that detailed logs can help troubleshoot errors. Menu labels vary by Reflect edition and version.
- Copy the complete error message and code, and note the last completed stage. Reflect reports progress by partition; for snapshot-related failures, the log may also include a VSS tab with snapshot details.
- Identify whether the failure occurred during snapshot creation, reading the source, writing to the destination, or verifying the image. Keep the full log rather than relying on a short summary or a remembered error number.
Do not assume that every “backup failed” message means the same thing. Macrium’s troubleshooting materials treat VSS failures, error 1117, unreadable-disk errors, and verification errors as distinct categories. Its Reflect 7.2 troubleshooting index is a legacy reference, last modified February 18, 2020; use it as a category guide, not as assurance that every old menu or link applies to a current installation.

If Reflect reports a VSS snapshot error
Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) lets Windows create snapshots so Reflect can back up data that is in use. A snapshot-creation failure is a Windows VSS problem, not automatically a bad destination drive. Macrium’s current VSS troubleshooting guide recommends checking Reflect’s backup and VSS logs, relevant Windows VSS events, failed writers, and service configuration. It also describes a Other Tasks > Fix VSS Problems utility; its availability and exact menu path may differ by Reflect version.
- Read the Reflect log and VSS details to identify the failed stage and any named writer.
- Inspect the related Windows VSS events. For Reflect LTSC, Macrium’s Viewing Windows VSS Events guide describes opening a filtered event view with details.
- If your installed version provides it, run Other Tasks > Fix VSS Problems and review the result. Use the log and events to guide any further changes instead of broadly changing services or deleting snapshots without identifying the cause.
VSS errors can affect more than Reflect because other applications may rely on the same Windows service. Macrium says, “Any failure is caused by other software or system configuration problems and will affect every program that uses VSS.” That is Macrium’s general description; the specific cause on your PC still needs diagnosis.
#1 Best Overall

- The available storage capacity may vary.
Urgent workaround: make an offline backup
If you need an image before Windows VSS is repaired and can take the PC offline, Macrium says its rescue media can perform a backup without VSS: “The Macrium Reflect rescue media can be used to take backups and does not require the use of VSS.” Boot from compatible rescue media and run the backup outside the running Windows installation. This is a workaround for creating an offline image, not evidence that VSS has been fixed; follow the rescue-media instructions for your Reflect version and setup. Macrium’s Reflect v6 User Guide is a legacy reference, so do not assume its rescue-media screens match newer editions.
If the error is 0x8004231f
0x8004231f is VSS_E_INSUFFICIENT_STORAGE: VSS could not create a snapshot because of an insufficient-storage condition. Macrium’s error-specific guidance lists inadequate shadow-storage space, old snapshots consuming space, and incorrectly assigned drive letters on system partitions as possible causes.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Use the VSS log and events to determine which volume is implicated.
- Check shadow-storage capacity and whether old snapshots are consuming it.
- Check for an incorrectly assigned drive letter on a system partition if the evidence points that way.
Do not delete restore points or snapshots as a blanket first step: identify the affected volume and likely cause before changing storage or removing snapshots.

A read or I/O failure is different from a VSS snapshot failure. Capture the exact code, the affected disk or partition, and the last log stage. Macrium’s troubleshooting documentation routes error 1117 and unable to read from disk to separate error-specific procedures; a code alone does not establish which device or condition is responsible.

Follow the matching, current Macrium guidance for the exact error instead of running a generic repair or repeatedly retrying a backup to suspect media. Preserve the data and retain the log. If the error-specific procedure does not resolve it, send Macrium support the full log and relevant Windows events.
If image verification fails
Verification checks whether data read back from the image matches what was written. A mismatch means the image should be treated as suspect until you have a valid backup. Macrium’s verification troubleshooting article is legacy v5 help; it describes verification failures as rare and generally associated with hardware or media faults, with backup media the likeliest source and memory or motherboard faults also possible.

Use the log to establish which image and destination failed verification. Do not treat an unverified image as a confirmed-good backup. If the log or repeated results point to the destination, investigate that media; changing the destination cannot fix a VSS or source-disk problem.
Use the failure stage to narrow the next check
| Log stage or message | Likely category | Useful next evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Snapshot creation or VSS error | Windows VSS snapshot problem | Reflect VSS details, Windows VSS events, and any failed writer |
| 0x8004231f | VSS insufficient storage | Shadow-storage capacity, old snapshots, and system-partition drive-letter assignments for the implicated volume |
| Error 1117 or unable to read from disk | Source read or I/O problem | Exact code, affected disk or partition, and last completed log stage |
| Image verification mismatch | Read-after-write mismatch; destination media or other hardware may be involved | Verification log and the image’s destination; the legacy v5 article describes the diagnostic principle |
If the failure remains unexplained, search Macrium’s current documentation for the full error code and retain the failed log plus relevant Windows events for support. Instructions can differ among Reflect X, LTSC, and older releases; use guidance that matches the installed edition and version.
