Most Mac owners do not automatically need another antivirus app. macOS already includes defenses such as Gatekeeper, notarization, and XProtect. Moonlock is an optional companion for people who want extra scanning, a visible security dashboard, and tools such as a VPN or suspicious-message checker in one app. Whether it is worthwhile depends on which of those jobs you actually want help with.
What security does macOS already provide?
Apple describes Mac security as several layers working together, rather than a promise that malware cannot affect a Mac. Gatekeeper checks downloaded software for an identified developer, notarization, and signs that the software has been altered. These checks help prevent unsafe or untrusted software from launching.

Apple also says macOS includes XProtect, its built-in antivirus technology for signature-based malware detection and removal. XProtect signatures update automatically and independently of system updates. macOS checks for known malicious content when an app is first opened, when it changes, and when XProtect signatures are updated. What does Moonlock add?
MacPaw presents Moonlock as a security companion that complements Apple’s built-in tools. Its listed modules address different tasks; they are not all necessary for every Mac owner. The capabilities below are MacPaw’s product descriptions, not independent test findings. See MacPaw’s Moonlock product overview.
“I’m worried something malicious is already on my Mac”
The Malware Scanner can examine system files, ZIP archives, USB drives, and Mail attachments. MacPaw says users can choose scan depth and schedule scans, and that detections are placed in quarantine for review. Real-Time Protection is described as monitoring file and network activity, app behavior, system integrity, downloads, and external devices. MacPaw says background scans prioritize higher-risk locations and may skip safe or unchanged files. These descriptions do not establish an independent detection rate or measured effect on battery life.

“I get suspicious messages and can’t tell what’s real”
Scam Detector checks messages that you paste into it for phishing patterns. It can be an extra check, but do not treat a result as proof that a message is safe. Verify unexpected requests through a trusted channel before clicking a link, sharing information, or sending money.
“I work on public Wi-Fi or want more browsing privacy”
Moonlock includes a VPN that MacPaw says has a kill switch and lets users select a location or accept an optimal one. A VPN changes how network traffic is routed; it does not make every website, download, or message safe. Network Inspector is described as providing network visibility and allowing connections to be blocked based on country.

“I don’t understand all the Mac security settings”
System Protection and Security Advisor offer guidance on settings and practices such as permissions, updates, strong passwords, two-factor or multifactor authentication, and public Wi-Fi. This may be useful if you prefer prompts and a central dashboard to finding and managing each setting yourself.

Macworld likewise describes Moonlock as a way to consolidate optional scanning, message checking, network monitoring, VPN, and guidance. Its review page mentions 160 live and archived malware samples in connection with an independent review, but that is a sample count—not a detection percentage or proof of coverage for all current malware. What does MacPaw say about privacy?
MacPaw’s support page, updated October 28, 2025, says telemetry is optional and opt-in. The company says it does not collect or share personally identifiable information, file contents, or browsing history, and describes the VPN as having a no-logs policy. These are MacPaw’s statements; the cited sources do not establish that they have been independently audited. MacPaw’s privacy and telemetry information explains its claims.

Security habits that matter with or without Moonlock
- Install macOS updates so you receive current system and security protections.
- Download software from sources you trust and pay attention to macOS security warnings.
- Use unique, strong passwords and enable two-factor authentication where accounts support it. A compatible FIDO2 security key is one optional way to add a physical authentication factor; check that each account supports the key you choose.
- Treat unexpected links, attachments, and requests for credentials or payment cautiously. Confirm them independently rather than relying only on a scanner or message checker.
