First, check whether macOS 27 is final and your apps are ready
As of October 7, 2026, Apple’s developer materials describe macOS 27 beta resources and say the release will ship this fall; they do not establish that the final release is generally available. Check Apple’s macOS developer page and each app developer’s current requirements and release notes before installing or upgrading.

There is also a transition to plan for if you use an Apple silicon Mac. Apple says macOS 27 is the final release to support Rosetta for Intel-only apps; starting with macOS 28, Rosetta is limited to certain older, unmaintained games. Apple recommends moving to Universal or Apple silicon versions where available. To check an app, select it in Finder, choose File > Get Info, and inspect its Kind field. Window management: Rectangle
Rectangle moves and resizes windows with keyboard shortcuts or snap areas, which can help if you regularly arrange several windows side by side. Its developer describes it as free and open source, with stated support for macOS 10.15 and later on Intel and Apple silicon. Launcher and quick actions: Raycast
Raycast is a launcher and quick-action tool to consider if you want to start apps and reach actions from a keyboard-focused interface. Its changelog records version 2.6 on October 5, 2026, including fixes that refer to macOS 27. That shows active development and awareness of the OS, not complete certification for the final release. Raycast’s August 2026 version 2.0 notice says Dictation and AI Chat became Pro features after beta, and that signing in provides a seven-day Pro trial with no credit card required. Plan details and pricing can change; consult Raycast directly before relying on a specific feature or cost.
Choose it if: you want a launcher with additional actions and are willing to review its plan details. Skip it if: Spotlight already handles your searches and app launches.

How to decide what is worth installing
- Name the gap. Identify a repeated task that macOS’s built-in tools do not handle well for you.
- Check the developer’s current documentation. Confirm macOS 27 support, Intel or Apple silicon availability, release activity, permissions, and whether key features require payment.
- Install only what solves that gap. More utilities can mean more background processes, permissions, and settings to maintain; an app you do not use is not an upgrade.
