First identify the file-sharing protocol and server generation. Services for Macintosh (SFM) is Windows’ legacy Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) service; it is not the same connection path as modern SMB file sharing. A Windows Server 2003 SFM failure may be an authentication-compatibility problem, while a current Mac-to-Windows failure should be diagnosed as an SMB, network or permissions issue.
1. Confirm what the Mac is actually trying to use
Record the Windows Server edition and version, the macOS version, the address used, and the exact error message. Then determine whether the target is:

- AFP/SFM: a legacy Services for Macintosh share hosted by an older Windows Server.
- SMB: the current Windows file-sharing protocol used by modern macOS.
Do not apply an AFP authentication change to an SMB connection. The protocols have different negotiation, authentication and troubleshooting paths.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. If this is Windows Server 2003 Services for Macintosh
Check the server’s authentication default
Microsoft’s compatibility guidance identifies a Windows Server 2003 SFM default in which the service permits only Microsoft Authentication. Compare that accepted method with the authentication methods offered by the Mac client and with the exact SFM configuration on the server.

Understand the UAM difference
Microsoft UAM (User Authentication Module) is described as providing encrypted password logon to Windows AFP servers. Apple UAM, by contrast, may provide minimal or no encryption. A client and server that do not share a compatible authentication method can fail before the share is presented.
Do not make weak authentication the automatic fix
Microsoft warns that Apple UAM can leave passwords vulnerable to interception on a local network or over the Internet. Do not casually enable plaintext or otherwise weak authentication just to make an old share connect. If the service cannot use a suitably protected method, isolate the legacy server and plan migration to a supported file-sharing design.

3. If the connection is a current SMB share
Use the SMB address and Finder path
- In Finder, choose Go > Connect to Server.
- Enter
smb://server/share, replacing server with the DNS name or IP address and share with the Windows share name. - Authenticate with a Windows account that has permission to the share and its underlying folder.
Apple identifies TCP port 445 for file-sharing connections. A blocked port, incorrect DNS name, unavailable route or server firewall can therefore prevent the connection even when the username and password are correct.

Check SMB availability before changing authentication
Microsoft says SMBv1 is no longer installed by default and recommends checking which SMB versions are available, the TCP/IP transport, and protocol details. If an old device requires SMBv1, treat that as a compatibility and security issue rather than enabling it indiscriminately; use a supported SMB version or replace or isolate the legacy endpoint where possible.

4. General checks that apply to either path
- Verify that the Mac and server are on a working network and can reach the server name or IP address.
- Check the spelling of the server name, share name and, where relevant, Windows workgroup or domain details.
- Confirm the account name, password, account status and permissions on both the share and the NTFS folder.
- Check server and network firewalls for the protocol in use; SMB normally requires TCP 445, while AFP/SFM uses a different legacy service path.
- Capture the exact error and whether it occurs during discovery, authentication or opening a particular share. That distinction narrows the fault domain.
5. A practical decision path
| What you find | Most relevant next step |
|---|---|
| Windows Server 2003 SFM/AFP share; authentication is rejected | Compare the server’s Microsoft Authentication setting with the Mac’s available UAM and the configured SFM methods. Review the security exposure before changing anything. |
Finder address begins with smb:// or the server is a current Windows release |
Diagnose SMB: name resolution, reachability, TCP 445, SMB-version availability, credentials and permissions. |
| Server is reachable but only one share fails | Check that share’s name, share permissions and NTFS permissions; a successful server login does not guarantee access to every share. |
| No server discovery and no direct connection | Check network segmentation, DNS or IP reachability and firewall rules before changing client authentication. |
What this error does—and does not—establish
The message “Macintosh client cannot connect to Services for Macintosh” does not by itself prove a bad password or a damaged share. It may indicate an AFP/SFM authentication mismatch on a historical Windows Server 2003 installation, or it may be a modern SMB connection being diagnosed under an obsolete label. Establishing the protocol, versions and exact failure stage is the necessary first step.

Use the protocol that matches the environment: investigate Microsoft Authentication and UAM compatibility only for the documented Windows Server 2003 SFM case; use smb://, TCP 445, SMB-version, network and permissions checks for current Windows shares. Avoid weakening authentication on an exposed legacy server.
