How Can You Uninstall Hidden Windows Components? A Safe Windows 10 and 11 Guide

“Hidden Windows components” can mean optional features, provisioned apps, phantom devices, or Driver Store packages. This guide shows the correct removal path and the safeguards for each.

There is no single “hidden components” list in Windows. The phrase usually refers to an optional Windows feature, a Microsoft Store or provisioned app package, a hidden (non-present) device in Device Manager, or a driver package left in the Driver Store. Identify which one you have before removing it; the wrong command can affect networking, storage, graphics, input, security, boot, or recovery.

First identify what “hidden” means

What you found Where it appears Correct removal path Typical scope
Optional Windows feature or Feature on Demand Settings, Windows Features, DISM, or PowerShell Turn off or remove the feature Online Windows installation or an offline image
Microsoft Store app Installed apps or an app package list Uninstall the app for the current user Current user
Provisioned app package Windows image package inventory Remove the provisioned package Image and future user profiles
Hidden or phantom device Device Manager after enabling Show hidden devices Uninstall the device node This device installation
Driver package Driver Store inventory Delete the package with PnPUtil after checking usage System-wide Driver Store

The edition, build, feature name, package name, and driver’s Published Name determine the safe command. Do not delete an item merely because its display name looks unfamiliar.

Prepare a recovery path

  • Create a System Restore point before removing a component.
  • Keep administrator credentials available and ensure you can reach Windows Recovery if a restart exposes a problem.
  • Record the exact feature name, package identity, device name, or driver Published Name before changing anything.
  • Do not remove anything that supports active boot, storage, networking, graphics, input, security, or recovery hardware unless you have confirmed its dependencies.

Remove an optional Windows feature

Use Settings on Windows 11

  1. Open Settings > System > Optional features.
  2. Find the installed feature, select its options button, and choose Uninstall or Remove, depending on the build.
  3. Allow Windows to complete the change and restart if requested.

Windows 10 uses different Settings labels and some editions expose features through Apps > Optional features. If the feature is not listed, use the Windows Features dialog or servicing commands instead.

Use Windows Features for graphical administration

Press Win, search for Turn Windows features on or off, open it as an administrator, clear the feature’s checkbox, and select OK. This disables the selected feature; it does not automatically remove every related servicing component.

Use DISM or PowerShell for a known feature name

For an online installation, run an elevated terminal and substitute the exact feature name:

DISM /Online /Disable-Feature /FeatureName:<FeatureName>
Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName <FeatureName>

First inventory the installation so you do not guess the identifier:

DISM /Online /Get-Features

Some Features on Demand can be re-added from Windows Update or installation media. Whether that works depends on the edition, build, policy, and available source files.

Remove a hidden or phantom device

Device Manager hides some entries by default. Hidden entries can include devices set not to display, classes hidden from view, and hardware that was physically removed while its registry information remains. Microsoft calls the latter non-present or phantom devices.

  1. Sign in with an administrator account and open Device Manager.
  2. Select View > Show hidden devices.
  3. Expand the relevant class, such as Network adapters, Bluetooth, Ports, or Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click the known-unused device and choose Uninstall device.
  5. Only select Delete the driver software for this device after confirming that the package is not required by another device.
  6. Restart if Windows requests it.

Microsoft recommends physically unplugging the device before uninstalling it. Its documented warning is: “Before you uninstall a device, we recommend physically unplugging the device from the system.” If the hardware remains connected, Windows can rediscover it and reinstall the device or driver after a restart.

Uninstall an app package versus removing a provisioned package

Current-user Store app

For a normal installed app, open Settings > Apps > Installed apps, select the app’s menu, and choose Uninstall. This removes the app for the selected user where Windows permits it.

Provisioned package in the Windows image

A provisioned package is stored in the Windows image so it can be installed for new user profiles. Removing it is different from uninstalling the app for the current user. For an online image, use an elevated PowerShell session with the exact package name:

Get-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online
Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -Online -PackageName <PackageName>

This image-level operation primarily prevents the package from being provisioned for future profiles. It is not a substitute for removing an already-installed copy from every existing user. Test the package identity and scope before executing the removal command, especially on a shared computer or a customized deployment image.

Permanently remove a driver package

Uninstalling a device removes its device node, but the driver package can remain in the Driver Store. Permanent package removal is a separate, system-wide operation.

Check the package identity and usage

  1. Open Windows Terminal or Command Prompt as administrator.
  2. List third-party driver packages:
pnputil /enum-drivers

Note the exact Published Name (for example, a name beginning with oem). Confirm that no active or alternate device uses the package. A familiar manufacturer name is not proof that removal is safe.

Delete the package on supported Windows versions

On Windows 10 version 1607 and later, run the documented elevated command with the exact Published Name:

pnputil /delete-driver <Published Name> /uninstall

The /uninstall option removes the package from devices that use it while deleting it from the Driver Store. Do not force removal of a package required by active hardware. Windows Update can reinstall a necessary driver later.

Choose the least destructive operation

  • Only need the feature inactive? Disable the optional feature rather than attempting image cleanup.
  • Only one user needs an app removed? Uninstall that user’s app; do not remove the provisioned image package.
  • Hardware is gone and the entry is stale? Unplug it, show hidden devices, and uninstall the device node.
  • You need to reclaim a driver package? Verify every device using it, then use its Published Name with PnPUtil.
  • You are servicing a deployment image? Use image-aware DISM or AppX provisioning commands and verify the offline/online target before committing changes.

If Windows brings the item back

  • A still-connected device may be rediscovered during startup; unplug it before repeating the Device Manager operation.
  • Windows Update may reinstall a driver that Windows considers necessary.
  • A provisioned app can appear for a newly created profile if another image or policy provisions it.
  • An optional feature may return when a policy, management tool, or servicing operation enables it again.

When the component is tied to a work-managed computer, check the applicable Group Policy or mobile-device-management configuration before attempting repeated removal.

What not to delete

  • Do not remove core chipset, storage-controller, boot, graphics, network, input, security, or recovery drivers solely because they are hidden.
  • Do not delete servicing packages or component-store files manually.
  • Do not use a blanket script to remove every hidden Device Manager entry; “hidden” is a display state, not a safety classification.
  • Do not check the driver-deletion box or run PnPUtil until you have verified that another device does not depend on the same package.
