A 78-year-old driver’s difficult Mustang Mach-E road trip involved several separate problems, according to the person who posted about it: a public charging session that appeared to be starting but did not, an unfamiliar app request, an expired payment card, unhelpful dealer staff, a slow Level 2 stop and Phone As A Key trouble. That account raises a fair question—are these Ford-specific failures or broader EV ownership friction? It cannot answer it. It is one unverified account, not a measure of how often these systems fail or proof of who was responsible.
What happened on the road trip?
The post’s author described the father as liking his new 2025 Mustang Mach-E, while struggling with charging and access during a trip. In the author’s telling, one charger displayed a message suggesting it was “starting to charge,” but charging did not begin. The driver was then asked to “download a rando app.” A saved payment card had expired without a notification, dealer staff reportedly could not operate their charging app, another stop at Level 2 charging was slow, and the phone later stopped working as a car key.

The account does not identify the exact vehicle configuration, route, charging providers, app versions, connectivity conditions or payment-card issuer. It also provides no diagnostic records or independent confirmation. Those details matter: charging activation, billing, phone-based vehicle access and dealer assistance are different systems, and the post does not establish what caused any of the reported problems.
Why can public charging require different apps or steps?
There is no single activation process for every public charger. Ford’s 2025 US owner manual describes three situations, with the station and account determining which applies:

Ford’s public charging page describes Plug & Charge as automatic only at compatible public chargers. It also advertises more than 200,000 chargers in the BlueOval Charge Network; that is Ford’s current stated count, not a guarantee that every listed charger supports every activation method. Network size and compatibility can change. Ford also cautions that app functions depend on region and vehicle connectivity configuration. - Sign in to the Ford app and confirm that the correct vehicle is connected.
- Check that the payment card saved to the charging account is current.
- Review the planned stations and identify which activation method each supports; do not assume a station uses Plug & Charge or the Ford app.
- Know where to find the station’s activation instructions and support number if an app session does not start.
- Save Ford’s support number, 800-392-3673, before leaving. Ford advertises 24/7 live EV help to Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning owners who opt in to phone and text communications.
These checks follow Ford’s published charging workflow; they are not evidence that any one of them would have prevented the problems in the post. Weak or unavailable cellular service can also affect connected app functions, which Ford conditions on connectivity and vehicle configuration.

A mobile Level 2 power cord, which Ford discusses in its owner manual, may be useful for compatible home or destination charging. It does not fix a public station’s failed activation, an expired payment card or a network authorization issue. Check the outlet, electrical capacity, connector and vehicle requirements before relying on any cord.

What should a driver do if Phone As A Key stops working?
Phone As A Key is a convenience feature, not the only access method documented for the Mach-E. Ford’s emergency response guide says, “Phone as a Key – Phone as a key allows use of a smart phone in place of a passive key,” and states that Bluetooth must be enabled. The guide describes phone-key functions including passive entry and starting, remote locking and unlocking, remote start and memory recall. It also documents a physical key fob with a key blade.
Ford’s app guidance says Phone As A Key is available only on select vehicles, requires activation and may not work with every phone. Its setup instructions say the connection can take up to two minutes after accepting the in-vehicle prompt. For persistent app issues, Ford directs users to Account > Contact Help in the app. Remote app features also require the vehicle to be added to the app, an activated modem and cellular connectivity.

The 2025 US order guide lists two key fobs for the configurations it describes, alongside Phone As A Key setup. Equipment can vary by trim and vehicle, so verify what came with the specific car and keep a physical key available rather than relying only on a phone. Nothing in the trip account establishes whether its key problem involved Bluetooth, a phone setting, software or a vehicle fault. Consult Ford’s Phone As A Key instructions and the applicable owner information for the vehicle.
Where can Mach-E owners turn for help?
Ford lists customer service at 800-392-3673. Its contact page advertises 24/7 EV help with onboarding, charging, software updates and other questions for Mustang Mach-E and F-150 Lightning owners who agree to phone and text communications. Ford notes that select holidays are excluded and refers owners to a dealer for details. This is a support option, not a promise of a particular response time or resolution.

For an issue specifically with the Ford app, Ford’s listed route is Account > Contact Help. The app also supports service scheduling. If a vehicle fault is suspected, a dealer can assess the car; a station activation or billing problem may instead require help from the station operator or account provider. The post’s author reported difficulty getting help from dealership staff, but that single report does not establish dealer training levels or service quality across Ford’s network.
Does this prove the problem is Ford, or EV charging generally?
No. The account is useful as a reminder that a trip can depend on several independent links—station compatibility, account setup, payment status, connectivity, phone-key configuration and access to support—but it does not show how reliable those links are across Ford vehicles, other automakers or charging networks. Ford’s manuals explain the intended workflows; they do not diagnose this driver’s incidents. No comparative failure rate or independent statistic for the problems described is established here, so a broader verdict would go beyond the evidence.
