If Firefox will not start, finish, or save a download, first check the Downloads panel for a warning. If there is none, verify the save folder in Settings > General > Downloads, then check whether the problem affects every file or only a particular type. These checks help distinguish a blocked file from a destination, file-handling, or security-software problem.
Start by identifying what is failing
Open Firefox’s Downloads panel and look at the affected item. Is it still in progress, marked as failed, accompanied by a warning, or absent altogether? Also note whether every download fails or just one file, file type, or website. Those differences point to different causes; the symptoms alone do not establish which one applies.

- A warning appears: Firefox’s download protection may have blocked the file.
- The download starts but does not finish: Check the destination and consider whether security software is scanning or blocking it.
- The file seems to download but is hard to find: Check Firefox’s configured save folder.
- Only one type or site behaves differently: Check its file-handling action; the site may also be supplying incorrect media-type information.
Review any download warning before acting
Firefox can flag a potentially unsafe download in the Downloads panel and provide an explanation and options for the pending file. Read the warning and verify that both the file and its source are trustworthy before choosing to allow it. Do not treat a security warning as a routine obstacle to click past. Check where Firefox is trying to save the file
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Settings.
- Under General, scroll to Downloads.
- Check the selected destination. Choose a different folder that you know is available to your account, then try the download again.
A configured folder that Firefox cannot use can prevent a file from being saved. Trying another accessible folder is a low-risk way to test whether the destination is responsible. If only certain files behave differently, check their handling
In Settings > General > Files and Applications, inspect the action assigned to the affected file type. Firefox’s handling can vary by type, so an unexpected action may look different from a download that fails to start or save.
If the issue is limited to one site or type, the site may be supplying incorrect media-type information. The web server’s media type helps Firefox decide how to handle a file, so the behavior may not be controlled by a Firefox preference alone. Check security software when the other checks do not explain it
Firewalls, antivirus, antispyware, and other internet security software can block some downloads. Check the product’s settings for a specific block before changing its protections. A warning for one file is different from a broad conflict that affects many downloads, so match your response to the symptom.
Security software can also scan large files as they arrive. Mozilla notes that a long wait or increased CPU use during a large download may come from security software rather than Firefox. If you use temporary disablement as a diagnostic test, keep it brief, test only what is necessary, and re-enable protection immediately. Do not leave protection off to make a download work. Use Troubleshoot Mode to check extensions and themes
If the Downloads panel, destination, file-type handling, and security-software settings do not explain the problem, use Mozilla’s broader Firefox troubleshooting flow. Troubleshoot Mode can help determine whether an extension or theme is contributing to the issue. If downloads work in that mode, investigate add-ons or appearance customizations before changing unrelated settings. Consider Refresh Firefox only after simpler checks
Mozilla also recommends Refresh Firefox as an option for resolving broader problems. It can fix many issues while retaining essential information, but it changes Firefox’s setup and is not a guaranteed fix for downloads specifically. Leave advanced preference changes until last
Mozilla’s download troubleshooting guide includes preference resets in about:config for experienced users. Do not use them as an early guess: Mozilla warns that changing preferences can affect Firefox’s stability, security, and performance. Only follow a preference reset when the guidance matches your exact symptom and you understand the change. The same guide includes Mac-specific examples involving Safari preferences and plist files; those are relevant only when the stated error and platform match. Review the platform-specific troubleshooting guidance before attempting such steps.
When the cause is still unclear
Record your operating system, Firefox version, exact error text, whether the item appears in the Downloads panel, and whether all files or only particular files fail. Also note whether the same download works in another application. These details help narrow the issue without assuming that a single cause applies to everyone.
