The 2026 MacBook Air with M5 is a fast, quiet laptop for everyday work and many creative tasks, with strong battery life and 512GB of standard storage. Its main compromises are a 60Hz built-in display, only two Thunderbolt 4 ports and a fanless design that is less suited to long, demanding workloads. Choose the 13-inch model for portability or the 15-inch for more screen space; consider a MacBook Pro if sustained performance or a more capable display matters more than thinness and silence.
MacBook Air M5 pros and cons at a glance

|---|---|
| Strong performance for a thin, fanless laptop | Long, heavy workloads may suit a actively cooled laptop better |
| Apple rates battery life at up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web | Independent web-browsing test results vary by publication and method |
| 512GB standard storage, configurable up to 4TB | Only two Thunderbolt 4 ports are built in |
| 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, both with Liquid Retina displays | The built-in display does not offer 120Hz ProMotion |
| Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, MagSafe charging and support for up to two external displays | Recent M-series Air owners may find the upgrade incremental |
What are the MacBook Air M5’s main advantages?
Fast performance for everyday and creative work
Apple says the M5 improves CPU, graphics and AI performance over earlier Air generations. In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 test of a 15-inch M5 Air, the laptop scored 17,276 in Geekbench 6 multi-core and completed a 4K-to-1080p HandBrake transcode in 4 minutes 34 seconds. Those are results for that publication’s tested configuration, not a guarantee for every workload or configuration. Reviews found strong performance overall, while demanding games showed that the Air is not a universal substitute for a dedicated gaming laptop or a higher-performance Pro machine. Apple’s M5 announcement and Tom’s Guide’s review and test results provide the claims and measurement context.

Long battery life
Apple’s current specifications rate the Air for up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use. Independent tests give a practical point of reference: Tom’s Guide recorded 15 hours 37 minutes of continuous Wi-Fi web surfing at 150 nits on its test unit, while TechRadar reported 15.5 hours in its own web-surfing test. The methods and configurations differ, so those results should not be treated as a head-to-head comparison. Apple’s specifications, Tom’s Guide and TechRadar describe the figures.

The M5 Air starts with 512GB of storage and can be configured up to 4TB. Apple says the standard capacity doubles the previous generation’s base storage and that the new SSD has twice its read/write performance. Treat the speed comparison as Apple’s claim, rather than an independent test result. The larger starting capacity is useful if you keep a substantial collection of files or applications on the laptop. Apple’s March 2026 announcement gives the storage details.

Two sizes and modern wireless connections

The smaller version favors carrying convenience, while the larger gives more room for documents, timelines and side-by-side windows. Apple lists Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and support for up to two external displays. Both sizes share the Air’s basic proposition: a portable, fanless laptop rather than a workstation-style machine. See Apple’s technical specifications.
What are the MacBook Air M5’s drawbacks?
Two Thunderbolt 4 ports can be limiting
The laptop has two Thunderbolt 4 ports, a MagSafe charging port and a headphone jack. Charging over MagSafe can leave both Thunderbolt ports available, but people who regularly connect several wired accessories may need a compatible USB-C or Thunderbolt hub or dock. Check the connections and display requirements of your accessories before choosing one; no particular hub or dock is established here as a recommendation. Apple lists the port details in its specifications.

The built-in screen is not a high-refresh Pro display
Apple specifies a 500-nit Liquid Retina display, but the Air does not have 120Hz ProMotion, as Tom’s Guide notes. That difference matters most if you prioritize high-refresh motion or the display capabilities of a Pro model. Compare the current Pro line directly if its screen is central to your work or viewing preferences. Apple’s specifications and Tom’s Guide’s review cover these points.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFanless operation has a workload trade-off
The Air has no fan, which keeps it silent. For long-running CPU- or GPU-intensive work, such as sustained rendering or repeated exports, a MacBook Pro’s active cooling and other capabilities are worth comparing. This is a question of workload fit: fanless design alone does not mean every demanding task will slow down.

The M5 upgrade is less compelling for some recent owners
Reviewers describe the change from M4 as modest, and Macworld judged there was not much new this year while still considering the laptop a strong choice for many buyers. For someone whose recent M-series Air already meets their needs, the M5’s case rests more on a specific need for the new performance or the doubled base storage than on a wholesale redesign. Compare the current price of a new M5 with the cost of keeping or replacing your existing laptop. Macworld’s review discusses the generational change.
Should you choose the 13-inch or 15-inch MacBook Air?
| Model | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 13-inch (13.6-inch display) | People who prioritize a smaller footprint and portability | Less workspace than the 15-inch |
| 15-inch (15.3-inch display) | People who want more screen room without moving to a Pro | Larger footprint than the 13-inch |
Both sizes share the M5 Air’s overall design and core feature set. Choose based on where and how you work: frequent travel and compact bags favor the 13-inch, while a larger built-in workspace favors the 15-inch. Apple’s specification page lists display sizes and model details.

Is the MacBook Air M5 worth buying?
It is a strong fit if
- You want a quiet, portable Mac for general work, study, browsing and many creative tasks.
- Long battery life and 512GB of standard storage matter to you.
- You can work comfortably with the built-in display and two Thunderbolt 4 ports, or plan your external connections.
Compare a MacBook Pro if
- Your work involves frequent, sustained CPU- or GPU-heavy tasks.
- You specifically want a high-refresh built-in display or need a different port selection.
- The Air’s fanless design and compactness matter less than the Pro’s workload-oriented capabilities.
At U.S. launch in 2026, Tom’s Guide reported prices of $1,099 for the 13-inch and $1,299 for the 15-inch, each $100 above the respective prior-generation launch price. These are launch prices, not current or worldwide pricing; check the price and configuration available in your region before buying. Tom’s Guide’s review reports those launch figures.
