For the M5 MacBook Air, Apple’s baseline is 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD. Choose memory based on the workload you expect to keep active, and storage based on how much you want to keep on the Mac itself. Apple lists configurations up to 24GB or 32GB of memory and up to 4TB of storage, with exact options depending on the model. Which RAM and storage configuration should you choose? Start by treating them as two separate decisions.

What configurations does Apple offer?

Apple’s current MacBook Air technical specifications list 16GB of unified memory and a 512GB SSD as the starting configuration. Memory can be configured to 24GB or 32GB, while listed SSD capacities extend to 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB. The options available depend on the model. Apple’s MacBook Air technical specifications give the full configuration details.

Apple’s March 3, 2026 announcement said the M5 model starts with 512GB of storage—twice the prior generation’s starting capacity—and can be configured up to 4TB. Apple’s announcement also lists U.S. launch starting prices of $1,099 for the 13-inch model and $1,299 for the 15-inch model. Those are launch prices, not a statement of current sale prices or the cost of each upgrade.

How to choose memory

Unified memory is the capacity available to serve the work you have active on the Mac. The listed choices are 16GB, 24GB, and 32GB, but Apple’s published specifications do not establish a universal workload threshold for choosing among them. They also do not provide standardized results comparing those memory tiers.

Choose 16GB if it fits your expected workload

It is the standard configuration. If you are unsure, estimate the kind and scale of work you expect to keep active, rather than assuming that a particular job title or app automatically requires an upgrade. The available specifications alone cannot determine whether 16GB will suit every buyer.

Compare 24GB and 32GB against demanding or sustained workloads

If you expect to keep a heavier workload active, compare the larger capacities with the standard option before buying. The evidence available here does not identify a profession, application, or performance result that makes either upgrade necessary. Treat them as choices to evaluate against your own workload, not as guaranteed performance improvements.

How to choose internal storage

Storage is space for applications and files kept locally on the Mac; it is a separate choice from memory. Apple lists a 512GB starting SSD and options of 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB, with the exact set varying by model. Base your choice on the size of the files and libraries you expect to keep on the computer, rather than a universal capacity rule.

  • 512GB: the listed starting capacity. Consider whether it leaves enough room for your applications and the files you want stored locally.
  • 1TB or 2TB: compare these options with the size of the local libraries and projects you expect to keep.
  • 4TB: the largest capacity listed in Apple’s announcement; whether it is appropriate depends on your local-storage needs.

Apple’s cited materials do not establish current U.S. upgrade premiums, so they cannot show which SSD capacity is the best value. Check the current configuration price from Apple and retailers before deciding whether to pay for more internal storage.

Can an external SSD replace a larger internal drive?

An external SSD is a separate way to keep large files without putting all of them on the internal drive. Apple lists Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports on the M5 MacBook Air, providing a connection for external storage. It does not increase the capacity of the internal SSD, and the specifications cited here do not establish performance for any particular drive. Consider it if your workflow can keep some files external; choose internal capacity based on what you want available on the Mac itself.

What should you compare before buying?

  1. Choose the screen size. Apple’s March 3, 2026 U.S. announcement gave launch starting prices of $1,099 for the 13-inch M5 MacBook Air and $1,299 for the 15-inch model. Confirm current prices and the configuration you want; those figures are not verified current street prices.
  2. Decide on memory. Compare the standard 16GB with the available 24GB or 32GB option for your expected active workload. The published specifications do not provide a universal recommendation.
  3. Estimate local storage needs. Compare your applications and files with the available SSD capacities for your chosen model, then decide whether some large files can stay on an external drive.
  4. Check the complete price. Compare the actual price of the screen size, memory, and storage combination you intend to buy. The cited launch announcement does not supply an upgrade-price table.
