If your MacBook Air is completely unresponsive, hold its power button until it shuts down, then press it again to start. You may lose unsaved changes in open documents. If the problem keeps happening, the symptom matters: an update progress bar, an unexpected restart, and a flashing question-mark folder point to different troubleshooting paths.
First, check whether your Mac is actually frozen
A Mac that responds slowly is different from one that will not respond at all. If the pointer moves or the keyboard works, wait briefly and try a normal restart from the Apple menu rather than forcing a shutdown.

If macOS is installing an update, a progress bar can move slowly or pause for a long time. Apple advises allowing the installation time to continue; a pause alone does not prove the Mac is frozen. Repeated restarts or a progress bar that fails to advance are reasons to investigate startup trouble instead. See Apple’s guidance for when your Mac starts up to an Apple logo or progress bar.

How to restart a frozen MacBook Air
If the Mac is fully unresponsive and you cannot use the Apple menu, hold the power button until the Mac turns off, then press the button again to start it. Apple warns that you may lose unsaved changes in open documents. This is a recovery step, not a diagnosis; if the freeze returns, work through the checks below.

What may be causing the freeze?
There is no single cause established for every MacBook Air freeze. Consider these as troubleshooting avenues, not confirmed diagnoses:
- Software that loads at startup: Safe mode can help determine whether software loaded during startup is involved.
- An attached device or accessory: Disconnecting peripherals can help identify whether one is contributing to startup trouble.
- Storage or startup-disk trouble: This path is relevant when the Mac cannot find a usable startup disk or shows a flashing question-mark folder.
- Possible hardware trouble: Apple Diagnostics can help identify a component that may be at fault.
For the distinct case of an unexpected restart with a message saying the computer restarted because of a problem, Apple identifies the event as a kernel panic. Its guidance says faulty software is the most likely cause, while damaged or incompatible hardware—including attached devices—can also cause one. That explanation applies to kernel panics, not automatically to every freeze. Read Apple’s kernel-panic guidance.

Test whether startup software or an accessory is involved
Start in safe mode
Safe-mode steps depend on whether your MacBook Air has Apple silicon or an Intel processor. To identify the processor, open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. Then follow the matching steps in Apple’s safe-mode instructions. If the Mac behaves normally in safe mode, that can help narrow the investigation to software loaded during startup; it does not by itself identify a specific app.
Disconnect external devices
Shut down the Mac if possible, disconnect accessories, and try starting it again. If the startup problem stops, reconnect devices one at a time, restarting as needed, to see whether a particular accessory triggers it. Apple describes this approach in its startup troubleshooting steps.

Run Apple Diagnostics if hardware may be involved
Apple Diagnostics can help identify a hardware component that may be at fault. The steps differ for Apple silicon and Intel Macs, so use the procedure for your processor family in Apple’s current Diagnostics instructions. Record any reference code shown and share it with Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. A code is useful information for service, not a complete explanation of every freeze.
When to use macOS Recovery and Disk Utility
A flashing question-mark folder means the Mac cannot find its startup disk or the disk does not contain a working macOS installation. That is a startup-disk symptom, rather than simply evidence that a running Mac has frozen. Apple directs users with this symptom to macOS Recovery and Disk Utility; follow its startup-disk instructions.

Back up your data before using Disk Utility’s repair function. Disk Utility can repair some storage formatting and directory-structure errors, but it cannot resolve every cause of a freeze. Apple’s Disk Utility guidance explains how to run First Aid. If you do not have a current backup, make one before attempting disk repair whenever the Mac is usable enough to do so.

| What you see | What to try | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| The running Mac is completely unresponsive | Hold the power button until it shuts off, then start it again. | Unsaved document changes may be lost. |
| The Mac pauses at an update progress bar | Allow time for installation; if progress does not resume or the Mac repeatedly restarts, follow startup troubleshooting. | A long pause can occur during installation and is not, by itself, proof of a freeze. |
| The Mac restarts and reports a problem | Consider the kernel-panic path: investigate software, then isolate accessories and consider hardware diagnostics. | Apple’s software-first explanation applies to kernel panics, not all freezes. |
| A flashing question-mark folder appears | Use macOS Recovery and Disk Utility according to Apple’s startup-disk steps. | Back up before disk repair if possible. |
| Freezing continues after restart or isolation checks | Run Apple Diagnostics and seek service if self-help does not resolve the issue. | Keep any reference code for Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider. |
When to get service
Contact Apple or an Apple Authorised Service Provider if Apple Diagnostics gives a reference code, or if the freezes continue after the relevant software and accessory checks. Apple’s guidance recommends service when self-help does not resolve a suspected hardware issue. Procedures and interface wording can vary by processor family and macOS version.
