First check the Available figure in Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage (macOS Ventura 13 and later). On earlier macOS versions, open Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Storage information can take time to update after you remove files.
System Data is a broad classification, not a folder you can empty with one click. The safest approach is to review files you control, let macOS manage system files, and avoid deleting unknown items from system or Library folders.

What is System Data on Mac?
Apple describes System Data (called Other on some older versions of macOS) as a general category for Apple and third-party files that do not fit another storage category. It can include logs, caches, virtual-memory files, temporary files, runtime resources, fonts, app support files and plug-ins. The amount changes with the Mac’s current state, so there is no universal “normal” size.
The Storage pane does not offer a direct command to delete System Data. Apple says macOS manages the category’s contents; use Finder or the apps that created your personal files to manage those instead. Apple’s file-management guide explains that the category’s size varies with the state of the Mac.

Does a large System Data category mean you need to clean your Mac?
Not necessarily. Look at the overall available storage and whether you are seeing a specific problem, such as being unable to download an update or save a file. “Available” storage can include both free space and purgeable items such as caches; Apple notes that some space can be counted as both used and available. A large category by itself is not proof that the disk is critically full.
On Ventura 13 or later, check Apple menu > System Settings > General > Storage. On earlier versions, use Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage. Allow the Storage view to recalculate after cleanup rather than expecting the bar to change immediately. Apple’s overview is Free up storage space on Mac.

How do I reduce System Data on my Mac safely?
Rather than trying to delete the category directly, start with personal files and app data you recognize. Apple’s Storage screen may show recommendations and categories such as Documents; use these to locate large files, then decide whether you still need them.

In Finder, inspect Downloads and the Documents area for installers, archives, videos, or other large files you recognize. Delete only what you no longer need, or move files you want to keep to another storage device.
- Remove unneeded media or apps. Look for locally stored videos, music, or apps you no longer use. Removing an app may not remove documents or other data associated with it, so review those separately when relevant.
- Check old iPhone or iPad backups. If you no longer need a local device backup, remove it through the relevant device-management controls rather than deleting unfamiliar files by hand.
- Review Mail and Bin/Trash. Clear junk or deleted messages if you do not need them, and inspect the Bin or Trash before emptying it. Items there continue to occupy space until removed.
- Wait for Storage to refresh. Return to the Storage view after cleanup and give macOS time to update its figures.
Apple also lists using another storage device for files you want to keep as a way to free internal storage. That moves your files off the Mac’s internal disk; it does not directly remove system-managed data.

Can Optimize Storage or iCloud help?
macOS storage recommendations can help make selected files available on demand instead of keeping every item locally. With iCloud, this depends on the files, settings, internet access and the storage available in your iCloud plan. It can free internal space when eligible files are stored in the cloud, but it is not a guaranteed way to shrink System Data. Apple explains the options in Optimise storage space on your Mac.
Should I delete Time Machine local snapshots?
Usually, no. macOS normally removes Time Machine local snapshots as they age or when space is needed, and counts their space as available storage. Apple says a Mac typically creates one snapshot about every hour, keeps snapshots for 24 hours, and retains the last successful backup snapshot until space is needed. On macOS High Sierra or later, a snapshot is also made before a macOS update. These are Apple’s described operating intervals, not a promise that every Mac will show the same snapshot count.

If you have a specific reason to remove snapshots manually, follow Apple’s instructions for your macOS version in About Time Machine local snapshots. Apple’s method temporarily changes the automatic-backup setting; turn automatic backups back on afterward. Avoid making snapshot deletion the first response to a large System Data figure.
Will Safe Mode clear System Data?
Starting in Safe Mode can clear certain caches, which may provide temporary breathing room for a short-term task such as installing an update. macOS recreates caches as needed, so this is not a lasting cleanup method or a reliable way to reduce System Data by a specific amount. Use Apple’s instructions for starting Safe Mode on your Mac model and macOS version; the exact steps differ between Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
What should I avoid deleting?
- Do not remove arbitrary files from
/System,/Library, hidden cache folders, or app containers just because their names are unfamiliar. - Do not run destructive Terminal commands found online without understanding exactly which files they affect.
- Do not assume a cleanup utility is required: the Storage category is managed by macOS, and user files can be reviewed with built-in tools.
Deleting system or app-support files can break macOS or an app, and may not produce a lasting reduction because some files are recreated.
When should you contact Apple Support?
If the Mac still reports critically low available storage or behaves abnormally after you review user-managed files and allow Storage to update, consult Apple Support guidance for your macOS version or contact Apple Support. A precise diagnosis depends on the Mac’s configuration and the files actually occupying space; do not try to solve an unexplained shortage by deleting unknown system files.
