Mac Studio vs. Mac mini (2026): Which Desktop Mac Should You Buy?

The 2026 Mac mini and Mac Studio span four configurations and a wide price range. Compare memory ceilings, displays and connectivity to find the least expensive Mac that fits your work.

Buy a Mac mini if its memory, display support and ports cover your work; choose a Mac Studio when you can point to a specific need for more memory, more displays, faster pro connectivity or the M5 Max or M5 Ultra. The 2026 lineup ranges from the $899 M6 mini to the $5,499 M5 Ultra Studio, based on Apple’s announced U.S. starting prices. The right comparison is between the configurations your work requires—not simply the two product names.

What are the current models and prices?

Apple’s 2026 desktop lineup consists of Mac mini with M6 or M5 Pro and Mac Studio with M5 Max or M5 Ultra. Apple said the models began arriving on September 22, 2026. The following are announced U.S. starting prices, not guaranteed prices for upgraded configurations; prices vary by region and can change.

Model Announced U.S. starting price Listed starting configuration Maximum unified memory Maximum internal SSD
Mac mini M6 $899 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, 16GB memory, 256GB SSD 32GB 2TB
Mac mini M5 Pro $1,699 15-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB memory, 512GB SSD 64GB 8TB
Mac Studio M5 Max $2,499 18-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB memory, 512GB SSD 128GB 8TB
Mac Studio M5 Ultra $5,499 30-core CPU, 64-core GPU, 96GB memory, 1TB SSD 512GB 16TB

These are Apple-listed configuration options. Memory and internal storage are selected when ordering; do not treat them as user-upgradable parts. Apple announced the M5 Ultra’s 512GB memory option for late October 2026, so it was not yet available on October 4, 2026. Check current availability before ordering.

Which model fits your workload?

Choose M6 Mac mini for everyday work and modest creative projects

The M6 mini is the least expensive entry point and supports up to 32GB of unified memory. It is a sensible fit when your usual apps and projects fit within that ceiling, you need no more than three external displays, and its port selection works with your setup. Its base SSD is 256GB, so consider whether your active files will fit or whether external storage is part of your plan.

Choose M5 Pro Mac mini for a stronger mini without moving to Studio

The M5 Pro mini starts at 24GB of memory and can be configured to 64GB. Its listed starting configuration has a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU; Apple lists options up to an 18-core CPU and 20-core GPU. It also starts with twice the internal SSD capacity of the M6 mini, at 512GB, and can be configured with up to 8TB. If this ceiling and its three-display limit meet your needs, the mini avoids paying for Studio capabilities you will not use.

Choose M5 Max Mac Studio when memory, displays or pro connections are the constraint

The M5 Max Studio starts with 36GB of memory and can be configured to 128GB, and supports up to five external displays. It also provides four rear Thunderbolt 5 ports, two USB-A ports, HDMI 2.1, 10Gb Ethernet, a front SDXC slot and a 3.5mm headphone jack. On the front, the M5 Max has two USB-C ports rated up to 10Gb/s. This tier becomes relevant if the mini’s memory ceiling, display count or connection options are a real limitation for your work.

Choose M5 Ultra Mac Studio for the largest memory ceiling and most displays

The M5 Ultra Studio starts at 96GB of memory, with options up to 256GB or 512GB, and supports up to eight external displays. Its listed configuration has a 30-core CPU and 64-core GPU. The 512GB option is a specialized capacity, not a default feature, and Apple announced it for late October availability. Consider this tier when a project or local model genuinely needs its memory or compute scale—not simply because it is the top model.

How much memory and bandwidth do you need?

Unified memory is shared by the CPU and GPU, so the useful amount depends on the working set of your applications and projects. Large creative projects or local AI models may benefit from more capacity, but a higher ceiling is not automatically a performance improvement for a workload that does not use it. If you expect a model or project to exceed a mini’s maximum memory, the Studio options are materially different choices; that conclusion follows from Apple’s published capacity limits, not an independent benchmark.

Model Memory range Apple-listed memory bandwidth
Mac mini M6 16GB–32GB Up to 170GB/s
Mac mini M5 Pro 24GB–64GB Up to 307GB/s
Mac Studio M5 Max 36GB–128GB Up to 460GB/s
Mac Studio M5 Ultra 96GB–512GB Up to 1.2TB/s

Bandwidth and capacity describe different things: bandwidth is the rate at which data can move, while capacity is how much memory is available. Neither figure alone predicts how much faster a particular application will run.

How many displays and which ports matter?

Both Mac mini tiers support up to three external displays. M5 Max Studio supports up to five, and M5 Ultra Studio up to eight. Maximum resolution and refresh rate depend on the chip and the combination of Thunderbolt and HDMI connections, so confirm the exact display configuration in Apple’s technical specifications before buying if your setup has several high-resolution or high-refresh-rate screens.

  • A POWERFUL PLATFORM FOR AI — Apple silicon, and every major component that powers it, is designed to run demanding AI workflows like running huge LLMs, directly on device.

Both families list Wi‑Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. Mac Studio includes 10Gb Ethernet; 10Gb Ethernet is a configurable option on Mac mini, not a feature to assume on every mini configuration. Check the exact mini port layout and Ethernet option before deciding whether you need a hub or adapters. External displays and storage can also affect the setup cost, but their compatibility depends on the particular accessories and connection requirements.

Should Apple’s performance claims affect the choice?

Apple’s September 2026 availability announcement says the M6 mini offers up to 40 percent faster CPU performance, 2x faster graphics and storage, and up to 4x faster AI performance than previous-generation M4 mini systems. Apple says its testing was conducted in July 2026 and identifies the comparison configuration in that announcement.

In its August 25, 2026 Mac Studio announcement, Apple reported up to 1.3x faster CPU speed, 1.8x faster graphics, 2x faster storage and up to 4.3x faster AI performance for the new Studio generation, with comparison details and test caveats in the announcement. These are Apple-reported comparisons, not independent results or guarantees of those gains in every application. No independent benchmark results are established here, so use your own application requirements and the published configuration limits rather than treating the headline multipliers as universal.

A practical way to make the decision

  1. Set the workload requirement. Identify the applications, project sizes, local models and number of displays you actually expect to use.
  2. Rule out configurations that cannot meet it. Compare memory ceilings, display count, required ports and internal storage against the specs above.
  3. Compare the price of the needed configurations. The announced starting prices do not include the cost of upgrades; check the actual configured price in your region.
  4. Choose the least expensive configuration that covers the requirement. Move up to Studio when its additional capacity, display support, connectivity or chip option addresses a specific constraint.

Sources and scope

This comparison reflects Apple’s 2026 technical specifications for Mac mini and Mac Studio, Apple’s September 22, 2026 availability announcement, and Apple’s August 25, 2026 Mac Studio announcement. U.S. launch prices are used because those are the prices stated in Apple’s announcements; local prices and offers may differ. Apple’s performance figures are vendor claims, not independent test results.
