The M3 Ultra reaches the same maximum memory, GPU core count and SSD capacity, but has up to a 32-core CPU and more than 800GB/s of memory bandwidth. Apple reports gains for the M5 Ultra in its own tests; those results do not guarantee the same improvement in every application.
What changes between the M5 Ultra and M3 Ultra?
The main differences are generation, maximum CPU core count and memory bandwidth. The M5 Ultra is part of Apple’s 2026 Mac Studio, and the M3 Ultra belongs to the 2025 model. Both chips are offered with up to 80 GPU cores, 512GB unified memory and 16TB SSD, so the M5 Ultra’s newer name does not by itself mean more maximum memory or storage.

Apple’s specifications describe maximum configurations, not what every Mac Studio includes. Compare the memory and SSD capacity of the specific units you can buy, along with their price. How much faster does Apple say the M5 Ultra is?
Apple’s August 2026 announcement claims up to 1.3× higher multithreaded CPU performance, up to 1.8× faster graphics and up to 4.3× peak AI compute performance compared with M3 Ultra. Apple says its testing took place in August 2026 on preproduction systems. These are Apple’s results under its specified test conditions—not independent benchmarks or a promise that every app, project or AI model will run that much faster.

Which one makes more sense for your workload?
CPU-heavy work
The M5 Ultra’s maximum CPU configuration has four more cores than the M3 Ultra’s. That could matter in software able to use additional CPU cores, but the specifications alone do not establish the gain in a specific application. Look for results from the software and tasks you actually use before paying for a performance upgrade.

Graphics and video
Both reach 80 GPU cores, but equal core counts do not establish equal performance. Apple claims up to 1.8× faster graphics in its tested comparison; it does not follow that every video-editing or graphics workflow will improve by that amount. Use application-specific evidence where available, and compare the actual effects, export formats and project sizes relevant to your work.
Local AI and large datasets
Both generations can be configured with up to 512GB of unified memory, while the M5 Ultra has higher listed bandwidth: 1.2TB/s versus more than 800GB/s for M3 Ultra. Capacity determines how much data or how large a model can fit in memory; bandwidth describes how quickly data can move. Apple’s peak AI compute claim is workload-specific, so it should not be treated as a universal speed multiplier for local AI tasks.

Storage and peripherals
Each generation has a listed maximum 16TB SSD, but that capacity is not included in every configuration. Choose based on the projects and datasets you need on the internal drive. Apple lists Thunderbolt 5 for the M5 Ultra Mac Studio and introduced Thunderbolt 5 with the M3 Ultra model. Check the exact model’s port and external-display specifications against your monitors and accessories before purchasing; Apple’s technical specifications cover the M5 Ultra model.

An M3 Ultra that already meets your needs is not automatically worth replacing because a newer generation exists. Compare the cost of the exact M5 Ultra configuration you need with the value of a capability your current system lacks—such as performance in a workload where you can verify a meaningful improvement. If you are buying either generation new, compare the available exact configurations and current local prices rather than assuming the maximum specification or announced launch price applies to the unit on offer.

Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $5,499 for the M5 Ultra Mac Studio in 2026. That figure is an announced U.S. starting price, not a guaranteed current street price or the cost of every configuration. Apple had not published a current comparable M3 Ultra price; availability and prices vary by market and time. Confirm both with the seller before deciding.
How to make a fair comparison
- Match the workload. Identify the applications, project sizes and tasks that drive your decision; seek performance evidence for those tasks rather than relying on a peak claim alone.
- Match the configuration. Compare the memory and SSD capacity of the actual systems, not just the maximum configuration shown for each chip.
- Check your setup. Verify ports and external-display support against your monitors, storage and other peripherals using the exact model’s specifications.
- Compare current prices. Check the exact configurations in your market. Treat Apple’s $5,499 figure only as its announced U.S. M5 Ultra starting price in 2026.
- Weigh the upgrade against a specific need. If your M3 Ultra handles your work, upgrade only when the new capability is worth the cost to you.
