Apple’s M5 Ultra Mac Studio starts at $5,499 in the U.S.—the source of the rounded $5,500 figure—but that is not a like-for-like price comparison with NVIDIA DGX Spark. These are different hardware and software platforms, and the available evidence does not establish a head-to-head speed winner. Choose first by the software stack your work needs, then compare the exact memory, storage, regional availability, and checkout price of each configuration.
Which system fits your local AI workflow?
The decisive question is often whether your tools and deployment workflow need NVIDIA’s platform or fit the macOS and Apple-silicon environment. DGX Spark runs NVIDIA DGX OS on a GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip. Mac Studio runs macOS on Apple M5 Ultra. Memory capacity alone does not make these systems interchangeable: performance and feasibility depend on the software, model, precision, workload, and configuration.

Choose Mac Studio when your work fits macOS and Apple silicon
Mac Studio may suit developers and creators who want a powerful macOS desktop and whose local AI tools support Apple silicon. Its memory ceiling is also higher: Apple lists configurations up to 512 GB, though that option is stated as coming in late October 2026.
Choose DGX Spark when your work calls for NVIDIA’s stack
DGX Spark is the more direct fit when your workflow depends on NVIDIA software or a deployment environment built around NVIDIA hardware. NVIDIA specifies DGX OS and a Blackwell GPU. Confirm that the libraries, model implementation, and other tools you need support the system before buying; a published peak performance figure does not guarantee a particular workload will run faster.

How the published specifications compare
| Specification | Mac Studio M5 Ultra | NVIDIA DGX Spark |
|---|---|---|
| Platform | Apple M5 Ultra; macOS desktop | GB10 Grace Blackwell Superchip; NVIDIA DGX OS |
| CPU and GPU | Configurable up to 36 CPU cores and 80 GPU cores | 20-core Arm CPU; Blackwell GPU |
| System memory | 96 GB base; 256 GB and 512 GB options | 128 GB standard; 64 GB version sold only through participating OEM partners |
| Published memory bandwidth | 1.2 TB/s | 273 GB/s |
| Published AI performance figure | Apple claims up to 4.3× peak AI compute versus M3 Ultra, based on Apple testing in July 2026 | NVIDIA claims up to 1 PFLOP FP4 tensor performance |
| Storage | 1 TB base; configurable up to 16 TB | Up to 4 TB NVMe M.2 |
| Price evidence | $5,499 U.S. starting price | Dated Marketplace observations; no current price established |
Apple’s 4.3× figure is a vendor-reported comparison with the previous-generation M3 Ultra Mac Studio, not with DGX Spark. NVIDIA’s up-to-1-PFLOP figure is a published FP4 peak claim. They are different kinds of figures, and the available specifications do not establish a common benchmark, model, precision, software version, or workload. Neither number supports a direct speed ranking.
What the memory and storage figures mean for a buyer
Memory capacity is a constraint, not a speed verdict
Apple lists 96 GB as the M5 Ultra base memory, with 256 GB or 512 GB configurations. The 512 GB option is stated as coming in late October 2026. NVIDIA lists 128 GB for the standard DGX Spark and a 64 GB version available only through participating OEM partners. These capacities can affect which workloads fit, but they do not by themselves establish model performance or compatibility.

Storage configurations differ
Apple lists Mac Studio storage starting at 1 TB and configurable up to 16 TB. NVIDIA specifies up to 4 TB of NVMe M.2 storage for DGX Spark. Consider the storage you need for model files, datasets, and other work, and price the configuration you would actually buy rather than relying on base-system headlines.

Apple’s September 22, 2026 availability update says M5 Ultra Mac Studio starts at $5,499 U.S. and is available through Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Resellers. That starting price does not represent every memory or storage configuration.

DGX Spark pricing was less settled in the dated observations available here. AI Compute Scout reported a Marketplace listing for a 128 GB/4 TB configuration at $4,699 on September 11, 2026; it was out of stock with no displayed price on September 29; and it was still out of stock at $6,950 on October 4. These are historical listing observations, not a verified current offer. Check the exact regional listing and stock status before comparing costs.

Apple and NVIDIA publish the specifications and peak-performance claims above. Those manufacturer figures are not independent measurements. AI Compute Scout’s comparison explicitly says it physically tested neither system, so it is useful for its dated Marketplace observations and configuration framing, not as a performance test.

Tom’s Guide reported that its tested M5 Ultra Mac Studio ran cool and quiet during its own demanding gaming and video-rendering use. That is one reviewer’s experience under those workloads, not a controlled comparison with DGX Spark or a universal acoustic measurement.
A meaningful performance decision requires evidence for your specific model and task—including inference or fine-tuning, concurrency, context length, software stack, and configuration. The sources cited here do not establish a reproducible, controlled Mac Studio M5 Ultra versus DGX Spark benchmark.
Quick Recap
A practical checklist before choosing
- List the exact local AI tools, libraries, and deployment environment you intend to use; verify support for the platform you are considering.
- Identify your target model and task, including inference or fine-tuning, expected concurrency, and context length.
- Determine the memory and storage configuration your workload requires, then compare systems at those configurations rather than at headline prices.
- Check the current regional price, availability, and delivery timing for the specific system and configuration.
- Do not use memory bandwidth or dissimilar vendor peak figures as substitutes for a benchmark of your own workload.
