Review the eight permission areas below and grant only what a feature actually needs. The exact requests vary by app and macOS release; a chat app does not automatically need access to your files, screen, microphone, or other apps.
1. Check which folders the app can access
Under Privacy & Security > Files & Folders, review whether the app can reach locations such as Desktop, Documents, or Downloads. Folder access can make sense for a feature that summarizes a document you choose, but it is broader than access to one file. Prefer the narrowest access that lets the feature work.

Full Disk Access is substantially broader than permission for selected folders. Apple says it can include files across the Mac, data from apps such as Mail, Messages, Safari, and Home, Time Machine backups, and certain administrative settings. Do not approve it just because an AI app asks; first identify the feature that requires such reach and whether you need that feature.

3. Review screen and system-audio recording
A screen-aware assistant may need permission to record the screen, system audio, or both. Screen access can expose whatever is visible, including private messages, documents, and account details. Before enabling it, close or hide sensitive material and consider whether screen access is necessary for your task.
Check the app’s privacy practices as well as its macOS permission: Apple notes that information collected by third-party apps is governed by their own terms and policies. See Apple’s screen and system-audio recording instructions.

4. Allow microphone and camera only for relevant features
Microphone and camera permissions are separate. A voice conversation may need the microphone; a video feature may need the camera. If you do not use those features, leave the corresponding access off. You can review app permissions in Privacy & Security and change microphone access per app.
macOS also shows microphone activity: Control Center’s Recording Indicator indicates when the microphone is in use or has recently been used. Apple explains how to control microphone access.
5. Treat Input Monitoring as high-impact
Input Monitoring can allow an app to monitor mouse or trackpad input and see what you type on the keyboard. That is sensitive access. A standard text-chat interface should not need it merely to receive the text you enter in its window. Approve it only when you understand the specific feature that needs to observe input.

6. Verify why Accessibility access is requested
Apple’s settings reference says Accessibility permission can allow an app to run scripts and system commands to control the Mac. That may be relevant to a specific accessibility or computer-control feature, but it gives the app capabilities beyond reading a chat prompt. If the request is unexpected, deny it and check the app’s explanation before proceeding.
7. Limit Automation to the apps you use
Automation permission lets an app access and control other apps on the Mac. Review which target apps it requests to control, then allow only integrations you intend to use. Accessibility and Automation permissions require user approval as part of macOS protections; neither should be treated as a routine requirement for every AI tool.
8. Revisit permissions and revoke unused access
After installing or trying an AI app, return to Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security and review its granted access. Revoke permissions that are no longer needed; macOS lets you review covered access categories and stop future access. Apple’s settings guide explains the available controls.

Two useful Mac security baselines
FileVault protects stored data, not an unlocked session
FileVault encrypts the startup volume. Access requires valid login credentials or a recovery key; without them, the volume remains protected if the storage is removed and connected to another computer. This is protection for data at rest, not a substitute for limiting what an app can access while you are logged in. Apple explains how macOS controls app access to files.
Keep Gatekeeper’s downloaded-software checks enabled
Gatekeeper checks downloaded software for an identified developer, Apple notarization, and signs it has not been altered, and asks for approval before the first opening. Keep the standard checks in place; do not bypass a warning solely to install an AI app. These checks address software provenance and known malicious content, not whether an app’s data practices suit you. Find the controls on your macOS version
On macOS 13 or later, open Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security. On macOS 12 or earlier, the path is System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy. Labels and pane locations can change between releases. Permission names and requests also vary depending on the app, macOS version, and whether you use a native app or a website.

What permissions do—and do not—tell you
A macOS permission controls local access to a capability or data category; by itself, it does not establish whether a service retains accessed information or uses it to train models. Check the provider’s current privacy terms for those practices. Apple’s overview of protections for app access to user data describes the operating-system controls.
Lockdown Mode is not a routine prerequisite for AI use. Apple presents it as an escalation for people who believe they are personally targeted by highly sophisticated attacks, and says, “Most people are never targeted by attacks of this nature.” See Apple’s Privacy & Security settings reference.
