Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Short answer: a Mac mini is the more conventional general-purpose desktop, while a Raspberry Pi 5 is a compact, hands-on computer that requires you to assemble and verify the setup. Neither manufacturer’s specifications establish that its machine will reliably run an unattended 24/7 YouTube playlist stream. Choose based on your exact playback and encoding workflow, existing hardware, willingness to troubleshoot, and measured power use—not headline processor or power-supply figures.
What matters for a continuous YouTube stream
A computer’s ability to decode video is not the same as its ability to run your chosen streaming software, encode the signal, maintain a connection to YouTube, and recover unattended from an interruption. The first question is whether your workflow needs real-time encoding on the computer or can transmit a pre-encoded stream. The software path, network, power, storage and recovery behavior all matter alongside the hardware.

- Software compatibility: confirm that the operating system and the specific OBS or FFmpeg workflow you plan to use support your device and encoding method.
- Network and power: your internet service, router and upload capacity are separate from the computer. A stable connection and power supply are necessary for a long-running stream.
- Restart and recovery: consider what happens after a software crash, network drop or power interruption, and whether your setup can resume without someone present.
- Playlist and storage behavior: establish where media lives, how the playlist loops, and how logs or other files use storage over time.
- YouTube rules: check current YouTube Help for livestream eligibility, continuous streaming, looping, archives and copyright. The specifications discussed here do not establish policy compliance.
Before relying on either computer, verify the complete software and YouTube workflow, then run a long-duration test with the intended files, settings and network.
Mac mini vs Raspberry Pi 5
| Factor | Mac mini | Raspberry Pi 5 | What it means for a 24/7 stream |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hardware and media features | Apple lists current Apple-silicon configurations and hardware media engines on its Mac mini technical specifications page. | Raspberry Pi’s April 2026 product brief lists a quad-core 2.4 GHz Arm Cortex-A76 processor, memory options from 1 GB to 16 GB, and a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder. See the Raspberry Pi 5 product brief. | These are manufacturer-listed features, not tests of OBS, FFmpeg or a particular livestream pipeline. |
| Networking | Apple lists Ethernet, including 2.5Gb Ethernet and configurable faster networking for relevant configurations. | Raspberry Pi lists Gigabit Ethernet and dual-band Wi-Fi. | Neither specification guarantees adequate upload capacity or a reliable internet connection. |
| Power figures | Apple lists 155 W maximum continuous power. | Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5; introductory material describes peak use around 12 W in demanding cases. | These figures are not comparable measurements of either system while streaming. The Mac mini figure is a maximum rating, and the Pi supply rating is not typical consumption. |
| Setup | A conventional desktop computer with internal storage and built-in ports. | A board that needs an appropriate power supply and OS boot media; case and cooling choices depend on the setup. | Pi sellers’ accessory bundles differ by region. Its official getting-started guidance explains how to write an OS image to boot media: Raspberry Pi getting started. |
| Streaming software certainty | Compatibility for a particular always-on stream workflow is not established by the cited specifications. | Current OBS support on Raspberry Pi OS/ARM and the hardware-encoding workflow are not established by the cited specifications. | Check the exact software and encoder path before choosing either device. |
When a Mac mini makes more sense
Consider the Mac mini if you want a conventional desktop platform, need a general-purpose computer beyond this stream, and can justify its acquisition cost after checking the workflow you intend to run. Apple’s listed media engines and networking options are useful specifications to consider, but they do not prove that a particular streaming application or unattended setup will work as required. Confirm compatibility and test the actual stream rather than assuming the hardware features settle the question.

When a Raspberry Pi 5 makes more sense
Consider the Pi 5 if you are comfortable with a small-computer setup, OS installation and troubleshooting, and have verified that your streaming software and encoding path work on it. Raspberry Pi’s April 2026 product brief lists a 2.4 GHz quad-core processor, memory configurations from 1 GB to 16 GB, and a 4Kp60 HEVC decoder. Those details describe listed hardware; they do not establish livestream encoding performance.
Plan for more than the board itself. Raspberry Pi recommends a 27 W USB-C power supply for Pi 5, and the device boots from media prepared with an OS image. Choose storage capacity only after accounting for whether playlist files are local, their size, and any logging or other storage needs. Raspberry Pi’s April 2026 brief says the Pi 5 will remain in production until at least January 2036; that availability statement does not guarantee that a particular accessory or software workflow will remain available.

How to compare real costs and power use
The available power figures do not tell you what either system will consume in your intended stream. Apple’s 155 W maximum continuous-power rating is not a typical-load measurement; Raspberry Pi’s recommended 27 W supply rating is not a measurement of Pi 5 consumption. Neither figure is a like-for-like 24/7 streaming test.
- Price the complete configuration for your region, including the Pi’s power supply and boot media if they are not included. Account for any storage, case or cooling your setup needs.
- Run the same intended workload on the configuration you are considering: the same video, streaming software, output settings and network conditions.
- Measure whole-system power at the wall, including the power supply and attached storage, rather than estimating from a maximum rating or adapter size.
- Use your local electricity rate and measured consumption to estimate the ongoing energy cost. No shared-workload wattage or like-for-like cost measurement is established here.
- Include setup and maintenance effort in the decision: a lower purchase price does not settle whether you can keep the system functioning and recover it when unattended.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps playing uploaded videos without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
