Mac mini (M5 Pro) review: Fast, compact—and expensive when configured

The M5 Pro Mac mini is compact and faster than the M4 Pro in Macworld’s tests, but the $2,899 reviewed configuration makes careful price comparisons essential.

The M5 Pro Mac mini is a compact desktop with meaningful CPU and GPU gains over the M4 Pro in Macworld’s tests, plus current-generation connectivity. The catch is the price: Apple’s U.S. starting price is $1,699, while Macworld’s review configuration cost $2,899. Whether it is worthwhile depends less on the headline performance gains than on whether your work needs the upgraded chip, memory, storage and Ethernet.

What Macworld’s review found

Jason Cross, Macworld Senior Editor, reviewed the M5 Pro Mac mini on September 22, 2026. His conclusion captures the trade-off: “This is a good computer at a bad price, and it’s not worth the upgrade if you’re not in desperate need of one.” That is an editorial judgment, not a universal rule; the review’s reported tests show a faster machine, but the value case changes with configuration and workload.

Macworld says the enclosure and port layout are essentially unchanged from the prior model. The newer generation’s case for attention is therefore performance and updated wireless and Ethernet options, rather than a redesign.

How much faster is the M5 Pro?

In its 2026 review, Macworld compared the M5 Pro Mac mini with the M4 Pro Mac mini and reported the following results. These are the review’s benchmark and encoding results, not a guarantee that every application will improve by the same amount.

Macworld-reported test Result versus M4 Pro
Geekbench 7 single-core CPU 12% improvement
Geekbench 7 multi-core CPU 38% improvement
Geekbench GPU compute About 20% improvement
Geekbench AI, low-precision Neural Engine results About 33% faster
Cinebench 2026 multi-core 40% higher performance
CPU-based HandBrake encoding 26% less time to complete
Hardware-assisted HandBrake encoding 41% less time to complete

Those figures describe different tests, not one all-purpose speed multiplier. Macworld expects gains in real-world use to vary by task, estimating roughly 10–30% for CPU work and 20–40% for GPU work in most cases. A task that does not use the improved parts of the chip may see less benefit.

U.S. price and the configurations behind it

Apple announced a U.S. starting price of $1,699 for the M5 Pro Mac mini; the announced U.S. education price is $1,599. Apple said retail availability and deliveries began September 22, 2026. These are U.S. launch prices and should not be assumed to apply in other countries or to include taxes. Check Apple’s availability announcement for the announced pricing context.

Macworld’s $2,899 review machine was not the $1,699 entry configuration. It had the upgraded 18-core CPU/20-core GPU M5 Pro, 48GB unified memory, a 1TB SSD and 10Gb Ethernet. Apple lists the following M5 Pro options in its technical specifications:

Ethernet 2.5Gb; configurable to 10Gb 10Gb
Price $1,699 U.S. announced starting price; education price $1,599 $2,899, as reported by Macworld for its review configuration

The review-time comparison also put an M5 Max Mac Studio with 36GB of memory and a 1TB SSD at $2,799. That is $100 less than Macworld’s configured mini, but it is a comparison between those particular configurations—not proof that the Studio is always cheaper or the right choice for every buyer.

Size, ports and display support

Apple lists the M5 Pro model at 5.0 × 5.0 × 2.0 inches and 1.6 pounds. It is a small desktop, though you still need to provide a display, keyboard and pointing device.

  • Rear connections: three Thunderbolt 5 ports, HDMI and 2.5Gb Ethernet, configurable to 10Gb Ethernet.
  • Wireless: Apple N1 with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
  • External displays: up to three, including configurations of up to three displays at 6K/60Hz or 4K/165Hz.
  • Thunderbolt display support: Apple specifies DisplayPort 2.1 speeds.

These are Apple’s published specifications; confirm that the port mix, Ethernet speed and display configuration fit your particular setup before choosing options.

Who should consider it—and who should compare alternatives

Consider the M5 Pro if your work can use the extra performance

CPU-heavy compilation, video encoding, graphics work and local AI tasks may benefit from the M5 Pro’s additional performance, but not necessarily to the same degree. Use Macworld’s test results as evidence for those specific benchmarks and workflows, not as a promise of equivalent gains in your own applications. Decide how much unified memory and SSD capacity you actually need before comparing prices: raising those options is part of what separates an entry configuration from the reviewed $2,899 machine.

Compare the less expensive M6 Mac mini if you do not need Pro-class performance

Macworld points readers toward the less expensive M6 Mac mini as an alternative. The supplied comparison does not establish like-for-like prices or specifications for it, so compare the current configured price and capabilities you need rather than assuming a particular saving.

Compare Mac Studio if graphics capability or ports matter more

The review also compares its upgraded mini with an M5 Max Mac Studio. Macworld identifies the Studio as an alternative for more GPU capability and additional ports, but the cited price comparison is for specific configurations. Check your actual requirements for CPU and GPU work, memory, storage, ports and supported displays before deciding between the two systems.

Verdict

The M5 Pro Mac mini is an appealing compact desktop when your work can make use of its performance and you can configure it without paying for capacity you do not need. Macworld’s results show real gains over the M4 Pro in its tests, but its $2,899 review configuration makes the value question hard to ignore. Start with the $1,699 U.S. entry price, then price the exact memory, storage, chip and Ethernet options your workload requires; compare that total with the M6 Mac mini and the relevant Mac Studio configuration.
