For one YouTube playlist, an M2 Mac mini appears capable of ordinary video playback; the available specifications do not show that you need an M4 to keep a playlist running. Apple lists a video decode engine on both models. The M4 also lists AV1 decoding, but that format capability is not proof of smoother or more reliable unattended playback. Neither model’s specifications guarantee that a YouTube playlist will continue without interruption.
What the M2 and M4 offer for video playback
Apple lists a video decode engine and hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC and ProRes support for the Mac mini (2023) with M2. For the Mac mini (2024) with M4, Apple lists those capabilities plus AV1 decoding. That is a specification difference, not a controlled test of YouTube playback. YouTube’s choice of format and the way a playlist behaves in a browser are not established by these specifications.

For the standard configurations, Apple lists an 8-core CPU and 10-core GPU for M2, and a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU for M4. Those core counts do not establish which model will keep a playlist playing more reliably.

Power figures: useful context, not streaming measurements
Apple’s published power table uses different configurations for the two models, so its figures are not a like-for-like comparison and do not measure YouTube playback.
| Model and configuration listed by Apple | Idle | Maximum figure listed |
|---|---|---|
| Mac mini (2023) M2, 24GB unified memory, 2TB SSD | 7W | 50W CPU maximum |
| Mac mini (2024) M4, 16GB unified memory, 256GB SSD | 4W | 65W maximum |
Apple labels the M2 maximum as “CPU Max” and the M4 figure as “Max.” Do not read the difference as evidence that one will use less power while streaming a playlist. Apple separately lists maximum continuous power ratings of 150W for the standard M2 and 155W for M4; those are product electrical specifications, not typical playback consumption. See Apple’s Mac mini power consumption and thermal output information.
Networking is the same on paper
Apple lists Wi-Fi 6E and Gigabit Ethernet for both standard models. A newer processor does not by itself fix weak Wi-Fi, congestion, or an unreliable internet connection. For a stationary Mac mini, Ethernet is an available wired option; the actual connection quality remains a separate factor from the chip.

A decode engine establishes playback capability for listed formats, not unattended continuity. The sources here do not establish current YouTube playlist autoplay behavior, possible account, browser or regional restrictions, or the macOS settings needed to keep a browser session playing while managing display sleep. They also do not establish that either Mac mini has been tested for continuous playback or will avoid buffering.

- BTO Mac Mini Desktop Computer - Power Cord - Apple 1 Year Limited Warranty with 90 Day Free Technical Support
- Apple M1 chip with 8-core CPU and 8-core GPU

Before relying on either computer unattended, verify current YouTube controls and macOS sleep settings for your own browser, account and setup. Do not treat a processor upgrade as a substitute for checking those conditions.

Choose the M2 if playlist playback is the main workload
The documented decode capability supports ordinary video playback, and the available evidence does not show a need to step up to M4 solely for one playlist. Compare the actual configurations and current prices available to you, and factor in any other work you expect the computer to do.
Choose the M4 for its other documented capabilities, not a continuity promise
The M4 adds listed AV1 decoding and has a newer CPU specification. Those points may matter for workloads beyond a single playlist, but Apple’s specifications do not demonstrate a YouTube-specific improvement or uninterrupted playback. Current prices and product listings are not established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is a continuous YouTube presence built from uploaded videos rather than playing a playlist on a local Mac, StreamNeo is a separate option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
