Take a screenshot with Puppeteer in headless mode
Install the puppeteer package, which downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing browser by default. Save this as screenshot.mjs and run it with Node.js:

What “headless” means
Headless means Chrome runs without a visible user interface. It does not mean Puppeteer takes a screenshot without running a browser: Puppeteer still needs a compatible browser executable and a working runtime environment.

Choose a wait condition for the page
The navigation wait setting determines when Puppeteer proceeds to capture. networkidle2 can be useful for pages that settle after loading, but pages with persistent network activity may never satisfy it. Choose a condition that reflects the page’s actual readiness rather than assuming one wait strategy works for every site.
Save, return, or customize the screenshot
page.screenshot() returns image bytes when you omit path; include a path to save the image directly. Puppeteer’s screenshot options let you control the captured area and background:

Set the viewport explicitly with page.setViewport() so the page renders at the dimensions you expect. Puppeteer’s screen guide says the default headless screen is 800 × 600 unless --window-size is specified; relying on that default can produce a different layout than intended.
Choose between headless Chrome, headful Chrome, and headless shell

Use headless Chrome for a no-window screenshot that should follow regular Chrome behavior. Choose headful mode when visibility helps you inspect what the page is doing. Consider shell mode only when its narrower feature set and potential performance benefit suit the task.

Install and deployment considerations
The puppeteer package downloads Chrome for Testing by default. puppeteer-core is intended for teams that manage their own browser or connect to one remotely. In either case, your environment must provide a compatible browser and the dependencies needed to run it.
Linux sandbox configuration, system dependencies, and GPU behavior can affect deployment. Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide strongly discourages disabling the sandbox except when opening trusted content, so do not add --no-sandbox as a routine workaround. The separate chrome-headless-shell requires --enable-gpu for GPU acceleration.

Troubleshooting common capture problems
- The screenshot command appears to hang: the navigation wait condition may never be met, especially on pages with continuing network activity. Select a wait condition that fits the site, or wait for a page-specific selector or a deliberate delay.
- The screenshot has unexpected dimensions or layout: set the viewport with
page.setViewport()before navigation and choosefullPagedeliberately. Headless screen dimensions default to 800 × 600 unless--window-sizeis specified. - The browser will not start in a deployment environment: check that a compatible browser executable and its runtime dependencies are available, including any required Linux configuration. Consult Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guidance rather than automatically disabling the sandbox.
- Shell mode differs from regular Chrome: that mode uses a separate executable and does not completely match regular Chrome. Try current headless Chrome if the task depends on regular Chrome behavior.
