A Mac app launcher is a feature or app that helps you quickly find and open applications. macOS already includes one: Spotlight. Separate launchers can add app search and, depending on the product, tools for finding files, running commands, or triggering custom actions.
What does a Mac app launcher do?
At its simplest, a launcher gives you a quick way to locate an installed app and open it, often by bringing up a search field with a keyboard shortcut. “Launcher” describes this function, not one specific Mac app or a fixed set of features. It does not necessarily mean you need to download or buy anything.

Is there a launcher built into macOS?
Yes. Apple’s built-in Spotlight can search, browse, and open apps. Apple Support describes it as “the central location where you can search, browse and open your apps.” Apple’s guide to viewing and opening apps on Mac explains this built-in option.

Separate apps such as Raycast and Alfred can also find and open apps, and may extend the launcher idea into a broader search or command interface. Depending on the product and its configuration, that can include searching files or folders, web searches, commands, extensions, workflows, snippets, text expansion, or custom actions. Raycast describes its launcher as surfacing apps, files, folders, windows, links, commands, AI, and snippets; its global hotkey settings let users configure how they bring it up. Alfred describes its Mac features as including web and Mac search, hotkeys, keywords, text expansion, and custom actions.

Built-in feature or separate app?
Spotlight is part of the Mac experience; Raycast and Alfred are separate software. For opening apps, Spotlight may be all you need. A third-party launcher is worth considering if its additional search or workflow features match how you use your Mac.
Free features and optional paid additions
Feature availability can depend on the product and tier. Alfred’s feature overview distinguishes free core features from features offered through its optional Powerpack. Check the vendor’s current feature details before relying on a particular capability.

Why might a launcher not find a Mac file?
File search may depend on macOS indexing rather than operating independently of it. Alfred says its Mac file search relies on the metadata index used by Spotlight. If indexing is disabled, local file search is limited, although Alfred says web launching remains available. App launching and file search are distinct capabilities, so a problem finding a file does not necessarily mean the launcher cannot open apps. See Alfred’s indexing troubleshooting guidance for details.
