Ten percent extra flooring is a useful starting point, not a rule that fits every room or layout. Measure the area you will cover, choose a waste percentage suited to the installation, then divide the adjusted area by the product’s carton coverage and round up to whole cartons. For a simple straight layout, one measurement guide suggests about 5%; for diagonal layouts, about 10%; and for herringbone or chevron, about 15%. Those are planning estimates, not guarantees.
Why “buy 10% extra” is only a starting point
Waste is flooring beyond the measured area. It allows for pieces lost to cuts, offcuts, installation mistakes, and defects; you may also want extra matching material for a future repair. The amount needed depends on the installation pattern and room shape, so a single percentage cannot predict every project.

Pergo’s project planner uses a general 10% allowance for cutting, installation errors, and variation in floor design. Separately, the Flooring Institute’s measurement guide offers layout-based rules of thumb: approximately 5% for a simple straight or grid layout, 10% for diagonal, and 15% for herringbone or chevron. The guide says no standards body sets a universal percentage. These figures are different kinds of planning guidance, not competing guarantees of actual waste. Choose a waste allowance for your project

The layout percentages are the Flooring Institute guide’s rules of thumb, not values prescribed by a standards body. Pergo’s planner instead gives a general 10% planning example and separately says it recommends 15% waste for Pergo Hardwood, attributing that recommendation to an “NWFA regulation.” That attribution is Pergo’s; it should not be treated as independently verified here. Pergo also cautions that its planner is only a guide and cannot guarantee the figures will suit a particular installation. Follow the selected product’s own instructions.

Measure the flooring area before adding waste
- Measure each space that will receive flooring. For a rectangular room, multiply its length by its width. Keep measurements in one unit system.
- Break irregular spaces into rectangles. Calculate each rectangle’s area and add the results. Include connected closets, alcoves, and hallways if they will receive the same flooring.
- Measure stairs individually. The Flooring Institute guide recommends measuring each step because treads, risers, and nosings are cut separately. Confirm the approach against the product’s installation instructions.
For example, a 12-by-15-foot room has a measured area of 180 square feet. This is the area to which you apply the chosen waste allowance; it is not yet the amount to order.
Calculate adjusted area and whole cartons
Use the exact product’s stated carton coverage. A calculator should expose each input so you can see how the order is derived:

- Measured area: add the areas of all floor sections.
- Waste allowance: enter the percentage you chose for the layout and room conditions.
- Adjusted area: multiply measured area by 1 + (waste percentage ÷ 100).
- Cartons: divide adjusted area by the product’s square-foot coverage per carton and round up to the next whole carton.
For the 180-square-foot example, a 10% allowance gives 198 square feet (180 × 1.10). If the selected carton covers 22 square feet, divide 198 by 22 and order 9 cartons. The carton coverage in this illustration is hypothetical; use the coverage printed for the product you are actually buying. Pergo’s planner follows this same sequence: add the waste factor, divide by carton coverage, and round up.
What can change the estimate?
- Room geometry: alcoves, narrow sections, and other awkward shapes can create offcuts beyond what a simple floor-area calculation suggests.
- Pattern and cuts: diagonal and repeating patterned layouts may require more trimming than a straightforward straight layout.
- Product guidance: carton coverage and installation requirements vary by product. Use the selected flooring’s own directions rather than assuming a general planner applies.
- Future repairs: if you want matching material on hand, account for that separately from installation waste.
The available guidance gives starting percentages, not a validated formula for predicting the exact waste in every room. A calculator can make the arithmetic transparent, but it cannot remove the need to assess the floor plan and follow product-specific instructions.
