Your device uses both because local-link delivery and routing across networks are different jobs: switches forward frames using MAC addresses, while routers forward packets using IP addresses.
How MAC and IP addresses differ
| Question | MAC address | IP address |
|---|---|---|
| Networking role | Link-layer address used to deliver a frame on a local link, such as an Ethernet network. | Network-layer address used to identify a destination for routing between networks. |
| Typical forwarding device | A Layer 2 switch uses MAC addresses to forward traffic within a local network. | A router uses IP addresses to forward traffic between networks. |
| Scope | Applies to the current local link; it is not an end-to-end Internet destination. | Supports delivery across networks toward the addressed destination. |
| What it is associated with | A network interface for link-layer communication. | A network connection or interface address used for network-layer communication. |
Cisco explains the switch/router distinction in its computer networking overview and its Ethernet explainer. The labels “physical” for MAC and “logical” for IP can be a useful shorthand, but they do not explain the key difference: one serves delivery on a local link, while the other supports routing between networks.

Why a device needs both
An IP packet carries the network-layer destination. To transmit that packet over Ethernet, the sending device must also put it in a link-layer frame addressed for the next local delivery. On an Ethernet LAN, address resolution can associate the destination IP address on that link with the relevant MAC address. Cisco describes this local data-link lookup in its ARP documentation; IBM gives a LAN example of ARP asking which MAC address corresponds to an IP address.
Example: sending to a device on the same Ethernet LAN
- Your computer identifies the intended recipient using the packet’s destination IP address.
- If it needs the recipient’s MAC address for local Ethernet delivery, it uses address resolution. In the ARP example, a device broadcasts a question asking which MAC address is associated with an IP address, and the host configured with that IP responds.
- Your computer places the IP packet in an Ethernet frame addressed to the relevant MAC address and sends it across the LAN.
The IP address and MAC address are not competing labels. They are used at different layers in the same delivery process. Cisco’s ARP guide and Ethernet material describe the relationship between IP addressing, address resolution and link-layer delivery.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What changes when traffic leaves your local network
When the destination is beyond your local network, your device sends traffic toward a router. The router makes forwarding decisions using IP addressing. The Ethernet frame delivers the packet over the current local link; it does not carry the sender’s original MAC address unchanged all the way to the remote host. As traffic moves onto another link, link-layer delivery is determined for that next link. Cisco contrasts local Ethernet MAC addressing with IP routing between networks in its Ethernet explainer and networking overview.
A quick analogy—and its limit
Cisco compares IP addresses to ZIP codes and MAC addresses to street addresses or post office boxes. The comparison can help convey that the addresses have distinct roles, but it should not be taken literally: a MAC address is used for local-link delivery, not as a permanent physical location or an end-to-end Internet address. The networking roles, rather than the analogy, explain why both are needed.

- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Are MAC addresses permanent and IP addresses always unique?
Those are broader claims than the basic distinction establishes. The relevant networking sources explain how the two kinds of addressing function, but do not establish that MAC addresses always remain fixed or that IP addresses are always globally unique or permanent. The safe takeaway is about role and scope: MAC addresses serve link-layer delivery, and IP addresses support network-layer routing.
