M5 Ultra Mac Studio Review: A Powerful Mac for Local AI Agents—with a Memory Catch

The M5 Ultra Mac Studio speeds up selected local AI workloads, but a 256GB test unit ran out of memory on a long-context task. Here’s who may benefit—and who should skip it.

For local AI agents, the M5 Ultra Mac Studio can make large-model workflows feel faster and more practical—but it is an expensive specialist machine, not an automatic upgrade for everyone. In a four-day test, MacStories’ Federico Viticci found the 256GB model substantially quicker than his 512GB M3 Ultra on selected prompt-processing tasks. Yet that same M5 Ultra ran out of memory on a 256K-context task the older, higher-memory Mac completed. If your agents need very large contexts or several models at once, memory capacity may matter more than the chip generation.

What the M5 Ultra Mac Studio offers for local AI

Apple announced the M5 Ultra Mac Studio on August 25, 2026, and availability began September 22. Apple’s announcement lists a maximum 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU, 512GB of unified memory, and 1.2TB/s memory bandwidth. Those are maximum configuration figures, not the baseline specification.

Apple’s Mac Studio technical specifications list the M5 Ultra starting with a 30-core CPU, 64-core GPU, and 96GB of unified memory. The CPU/GPU can be configured to 36/80 cores; memory options are 96GB, 256GB, and 512GB. Storage starts at 1TB, with 2TB, 4TB, 8TB, and 16TB options.

That unified memory is the main attraction for local models: it is shared across the system rather than limited to a discrete graphics card’s VRAM. But not all of it is available for model weights. macOS, the inference runtime, the model’s context cache, and concurrent agent processes also use memory. More memory can let you load larger models or longer contexts; it does not, by itself, guarantee a faster answer.

Apple’s benchmark claims are vendor claims

Apple says the M5 Ultra delivers up to 4.3× the peak AI compute performance of the M3 Ultra and up to 9.8× faster LLM prompt processing than M1 Ultra, or up to 4× faster than M3 Ultra in LM Studio. These are Apple’s own comparisons, based on tests it says were conducted in July 2026; they should not be read as independent results or as a guarantee for every model and workload. Apple Chief Hardware Officer Johny Srouji called it “the ultimate desktop for on-device AI”—promotional language, rather than a measured conclusion.

What a hands-on local-agent test found

Viticci tested a 256GB M5 Ultra for four days alongside a 512GB M3 Ultra and a Windows gaming PC with an RTX 5090. His automated harness coordinated Codex instances across the machines. On macOS, he used oMLX version 0.7.0.dev2 with Qwen3.8-Flash-Next, GLM-5.3-Flash-MLX, and Qwen3.8-27B for most tests; the Windows system used LM Studio and CUDA 12. Tests covered prompt processing, output generation, context lengths, quantization, and concurrent helper agents. The results describe that setup, not every agent framework or inference runtime.

A matched prompt favored the M5 Ultra

For one Qwen prompt of 65,235 tokens, Viticci measured 24.4 seconds to read the prompt on the 256GB M5 Ultra, compared with 59.7 seconds on the 512GB M3 Ultra. Reported output rates were 73 and 39 tokens per second, respectively. This is a specific model, prompt, and test environment—not a general speed ratio for local AI. Another GLM test with a 61,434-token prompt took 62.5 seconds on the M5 Ultra versus 140 seconds on the M3 Ultra, but Viticci noted that the 64K GLM run happened later with GLM loaded by itself.

More memory beat the newer chip in a long-context test

In a 256K-context Flash-Next task, the 512GB M3 Ultra completed the run in 11 minutes and 2 seconds. The 256GB M5 Ultra returned no answer because it ran out of memory. The comparison changes both chip and memory capacity, but it illustrates a practical limit: a faster processor cannot finish a workload that does not fit in available memory.

On the tested 256GB M5 Ultra, Viticci found that oQ4e and oQ5e builds fit in memory, while oQ6e and oQ8e required SSD embedding-table offload. Offloading can make a configuration usable, but it is not evidence that the model runs at full memory speed. His preference for 5-bit quantization was specific to his tested workload; quantization choices involve a trade-off between memory use and model quality.

How it compares with an RTX 5090 PC

The Mac and the PC solve different constraints. In Viticci’s system, the RTX 5090 had 32GB of GPU memory and led on prompt processing and token generation in some smaller-model comparisons. The Mac’s larger unified-memory pool let it run models too large for that GPU’s VRAM without the same model-layer offload trade-off. Viticci also found his Mac Studio quieter and smaller than his gaming PC while running large models, and said the Mac’s fan was barely audible in day-to-day use; that is a first-person observation, not a lab noise measurement.

The useful comparison is therefore not simply “Mac or PC?” Consider whether your priority is fitting a large model, speeding up smaller-model inference, or running a compact and quieter workstation. Results also depend on prompt length, context, quantization, cache state, and how many requests run at once. Prompt processing and output generation are distinct stages, so a result for one should not be treated as a score for the other.

Who should buy the M5 Ultra for AI agents?

It makes sense for memory-intensive local work

  • You regularly run large models, long-context tasks, or several local agent processes and have confirmed that your chosen model and runtime fit the configuration you plan to buy.
  • You value keeping model prompts on your own machine in the tested local setup, while recognizing that local execution is not a blanket security guarantee. Agent permissions, runtime and model integrity, and any external tools still affect security.
  • You are comfortable configuring local inference software and troubleshooting it. Viticci describes the setup as fiddly, and acknowledges that cloud models can still be better and faster.

It is a poor default for general desktop use

  • You mainly need a Mac for everyday work, rather than workloads that benefit from unusually large memory capacity or sustained local inference.
  • Your priority is the best performance per dollar. Tom’s Guide reported a US starting price of $5,499 for the M5 Ultra model and valued its tested 256GB/4TB system at $12,299. These are review-era, US-specific figures, not a current universal quote; check Apple’s current price for the exact configuration and market.
  • You expect a local model to match the strongest cloud services automatically, or want a turnkey agent setup without technical maintenance.

Tom’s Guide suggests considering the much cheaper M6 Mac mini if you do not need the Studio’s capacity and performance. That is a useful reminder to size the machine to the workload rather than buy the largest desktop by default.

How much memory should you choose?

Start with the largest model and context you actually plan to run, then account for the runtime, operating system, and any agents or other models that will be active at the same time. If that total approaches the available memory, leave headroom rather than assuming a larger chip will solve capacity pressure.

  • A POWERFUL PLATFORM FOR AI — Apple silicon, and every major component that powers it, is designed to run demanding AI workflows like running huge LLMs, directly on device.
  • 96GB: Apple’s base M5 Ultra memory option. The cited hands-on test did not evaluate this configuration, so its results do not establish how it handles the review’s models and contexts.
  • 256GB: The configuration Viticci tested. It was faster on selected prompt-processing comparisons, but did not complete his 256K-context task because it ran out of memory.
  • 512GB: Apple’s maximum memory option. The review did not test a 512GB M5 Ultra, so there is no direct evidence here of its speed or whether it would complete that task. The 512GB M3 Ultra’s successful run shows why extra capacity can matter, not what performance a 512GB M5 Ultra would deliver.

Apple also lists Thunderbolt 5, 10Gb Ethernet, Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, HDMI 2.1, a front SDXC slot, and support for up to eight external displays on the M5 Ultra. These are workstation connectivity features, not evidence of faster inference.

Verdict

Federico Viticci’s phrase “a dream machine for local AI agents” captures his experience with selected workflows, not a universal buying verdict. The M5 Ultra Mac Studio is compelling when a large unified-memory pool, fast local inference, and a quiet compact desktop justify the cost and setup effort. Choose by memory headroom as carefully as by processor speed—and do not treat the tested 256GB model’s strong prompt results as proof it can handle every long-context job.
