Low-Latency Streaming Technologies: LL-HLS vs. Low-Latency DASH vs. SRT

LL-HLS and low-latency DASH deliver to viewers over HTTP; SRT transports video between endpoints. Compare their roles, requirements, and latency claims fairly.

There is no universal lowest-latency streaming technology. LL-HLS and low-latency DASH are approaches for delivering video to viewers over HTTP; SRT is chiefly used to move video between contribution or distribution endpoints. The right choice depends on where delay occurs, how much interaction the stream needs, and whether the encoder, delivery system, and player support the same approach.

What “low latency” means depends on where you measure it

A latency figure is useful only when its start and end points are clear. Glass-to-glass delay usually means the time from capturing an event to displaying it on a viewer’s screen. That total can include capture, encoding, multiplexing, network transfer, segment or chunk handling, decoding, and display. A transport buffer setting measures only one part of that chain.

For example, Haivision’s SRT documentation says that in SRT, “latency” refers only to the delay introduced by sending over the network. SRT’s configured buffer is not a camera-to-screen guarantee. A stream can have a small transport buffer and still have substantial end-to-end delay elsewhere in the workflow.

How the technologies differ

Technology Workflow role How it reduces or manages delay What must support it
LL-HLS HTTP-based delivery to viewers Apple’s low-latency extension to HLS uses features including partial media segments, playlist delta updates, blocking playlist reloads, preload hints, and rendition reports. Production and packaging, delivery infrastructure, and playback must be coordinated. Apple says clients may fall back to regular-latency playback if the server does not meet the relevant low-latency configuration profile.
Low-latency DASH HTTP-based delivery to viewers DASH-IF identifies CMAF chunks, HTTP chunked transfer, consistent MPD signaling, and client requirements as enablers of early media availability. Encoder or packager, origin and CDN path, and player need compatible signaling and handling. DASH is designed to use existing HTTP infrastructure such as servers, CDNs, proxies, and caches.
SRT Contribution or distribution transport over IP networks Packet recovery and buffering are intended to handle jitter, packet loss, and changing network conditions across a link. Both transport endpoints need SRT support, and the configured buffer should reflect actual link conditions.
CMAF Segmented media format used with delivery protocols It is not itself a streaming protocol. HLS and MPEG-DASH can both reference compatible CMAF media objects. Packaging, playlists or manifests, and delivery must be compatible. Shared media objects can support cache reuse across platforms when the implementation is compatible.

LL-HLS: low-latency delivery within the HLS ecosystem

LL-HLS extends HLS rather than replacing the need for coordinated packaging, delivery, and playback. Its partial segments and playlist mechanisms let a client request media sooner than a workflow that waits for complete segments. Apple describes the extension as enabling low-latency video while maintaining scalability. Its fallback behavior matters operationally: if the server does not meet the relevant low-latency profile, playback can revert to regular-latency HLS.

Low-latency DASH: early availability over HTTP

Low-latency DASH also targets viewer delivery over HTTP. DASH-IF’s guidance emphasizes the interaction between CMAF chunks, chunked transfer, MPD signaling, and player behavior. MPEG describes DASH as using existing HTTP infrastructure, including servers, CDNs, proxies, and caches. Existing infrastructure can be useful, but it does not make low latency automatic: each part of the chain must handle the chosen signaling and media timing correctly.

SRT: a resilient link, not a viewer-delivery equivalent

SRT addresses transport between endpoints, commonly in contribution or distribution workflows. Its latency setting controls buffering for that transport link, with the intent of allowing recovery under loss and jitter. It is therefore not a like-for-like substitute for LL-HLS or low-latency DASH at the viewer-delivery stage. A system may use SRT to bring a feed into a service and then use LL-HLS or DASH to deliver it to viewers.

CMAF: media packaging shared by HLS and DASH

CMAF is a segmented media format rather than a protocol that independently determines delivery behavior or latency. Apple documents that HLS and MPEG-DASH can use CMAF, and that an HLS playlist and a DASH MPD can point to shared CMAF media objects. This can reduce duplicate media storage or support cache reuse when packaging and delivery are compatible; it does not guarantee a particular delay.

What published latency figures do—and do not—show

  • LL-HLS: Apple’s 2020 WWDC session described a stream delay of two seconds or less. This is Apple’s stated capability, not a guarantee for every implementation.
  • LL-HLS design target: Apple’s 2019 statement gave a target of one to two seconds from live at scale over the public internet with a reasonable round-trip time. It is a historical design target with stated conditions, not an independent benchmark.
  • SRT buffer setting: Haivision’s version 1.5.4 documentation, published in 2026, gives a configurable SRT latency range of 20–8000 ms. That is the transport buffer setting; it is not total glass-to-glass delay.
  • SRT rule of thumb: Haivision gives four times round-trip time as a rule of thumb for a fairly good network with 0.1–0.2% loss and no significant burst loss. It is not a universal setting recommendation.

These figures describe different boundaries and conditions, so comparing them as if they were results from one test would be misleading. No broadly applicable independent comparative benchmark is established here for all four technologies.

How to choose for a real workflow

  1. Identify the link you need to improve. If the delay is between a camera or encoder and an ingest or distribution endpoint, assess contribution transport such as SRT. If the delay is between the delivery service and viewers, assess LL-HLS or low-latency DASH.
  2. Set the interaction requirement. A one-way broadcast, a live event with audience participation, and a production monitor may tolerate different delays. Define the maximum acceptable glass-to-glass delay before selecting a transport or delivery mode.
  3. Check the whole compatibility chain. Confirm that the encoder or packager, origin, CDN path, and target players support the chosen low-latency mode and its signaling. A compatible format alone does not establish that every player or cache will preserve low-latency behavior.
  4. Test under the network conditions that matter. Measure capture-to-display delay at representative locations and devices, and include jitter, packet loss, and burst loss where relevant. For SRT, tune the transport buffer against the actual link rather than treating a published range as a universal setting.
  5. Verify fallback and recovery behavior. Establish what viewers see if a server, player, or delivery path cannot sustain the low-latency profile. In LL-HLS, Apple documents fallback to regular-latency playback when the server does not meet the applicable profile.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Ranking by a single latency number: First check the measurement boundary, test conditions, and whether the figure is a stated capability, historical target, transport setting, or measured result.
  • Treating SRT’s buffer as end-to-end delay: The buffer concerns the SRT network transport portion; capture, encode, downstream packaging, decoding, and display add other delays.
  • Assuming CMAF is a protocol: CMAF is a media format that can be used with HLS and DASH, not a standalone delivery choice.
  • Assuming HTTP-based delivery is automatically low latency: LL-HLS and low-latency DASH depend on coordinated support across packaging, servers or CDNs, and clients.
  • Calling one technology the winner for every stage: A workflow can use different approaches on contribution and viewer-delivery links.

Where a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream is a different problem

Keeping uploaded videos playing continuously on YouTube is not the same as minimizing live camera-to-screen delay. For that separate use case, StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live; it loops uploaded video from the cloud without requiring a computer, OBS, or home connection to stay on. It supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. It streams to YouTube only and does not go live from a camera. To try it, start at StreamNeo’s free first day; no card is required for that first day.
