A practical build needs distinct red and near-infrared channels, calibration against known reflectance, image alignment and capture conditions that avoid saturation. Even then, NDVI indicates a reflectance pattern—not the cause of plant stress.
What a low-cost NDVI camera measures
NDVI is calculated from red and near-infrared (NIR) reflectance:

NDVI = (NIR − red) / (NIR + red)
Chlorophyll absorbs much of the red light used in the index, while leaf structure tends to reflect more NIR. The resulting value is normalized from −1 to 1. A positive value means the measured NIR reflectance is greater than red reflectance; in the interpretation described by Stamford and colleagues, healthy vegetation can approach 1. NDVI summarizes this spectral contrast. By itself, it cannot identify a particular disease, pest or nutrient deficiency. Stamford et al., Plant Methods, 2023

A camera’s pixel values are digital numbers affected by the sensor and image processing; they are not reflectance values simply because they come from red and infrared-sensitive cameras.

How the Raspberry Pi dual-camera design separates red and NIR
The NDVIpi system described in the 2023 paper uses a Raspberry Pi with two cameras: an ordinary RGB camera and a NoIR camera. The RGB camera supplies the visible red channel. The NoIR camera lacks an infrared-blocking filter; a filter placed over it reduces red transmission while allowing infrared through. The paper reports that its filter still admitted some red light, so the authors corrected for that leakage.
In that implementation, the selected central wavelengths were about 620 nm for red and 750 nm for NIR. Those are choices made for the study, not universal NDVI band requirements. As the authors put it, “there is no universally agreed-upon standard for the specific red and NIR wavelengths that should be used to determine NDVI.” Different band choices can therefore produce different NDVI values, even when the systems observe the same vegetation. The NDVIpi study found greater sensitivity to chlorophyll changes with its selected wavelengths, but also greater variation; that result is specific to its experiments, not proof that this configuration is universally superior. Stamford et al., 2023
What the build needs
- A Raspberry Pi or compatible compute platform, an RGB camera and a NoIR camera.
- An NIR filter for the NoIR camera, with its spectral transmission suited to separating the desired bands.
- A stable mount that holds the cameras in the same plane.
- Reference materials with documented reflectance for calibration.
- A capture and processing workflow that preserves usable, non-saturated image data and aligns the two views.
No single component makes the result calibrated. The filter, camera response, reference targets, capture conditions and processing all affect the final index. The paper documents a design and method; it does not establish current product compatibility, listings or prices.

The red and NIR images come from different camera positions, so corresponding pixels may not depict precisely the same part of a leaf or canopy. Before calculating NDVI pixel by pixel, the images must be registered—aligned so that matching features overlap. Stamford and colleagues used feature-based alignment and a holder that kept the cameras in the same plane.

Parallax makes alignment harder when the cameras are close to a three-dimensional or uneven subject: an object at one depth shifts differently from an object at another. Increasing the camera-to-subject distance reduces this effect, although the paper does not present that as a substitute for registration. This is particularly relevant for close-up leaf imaging; a visually plausible overlay does not guarantee that every pixel pair corresponds to the same surface.
How calibration turns pixel values into useful inputs
The NDVI formula calls for reflectance, not raw camera values. In the 2023 method, the team used six materials with known reflectance to map camera digital numbers to reflectance. This matters because off-the-shelf cameras may apply nonlinear processing, including gamma correction. A simple two-point empirical-line calibration assumes a linear response; the authors found their six-reference approach more precise in their comparison. They note that two references may still be useful when operational constraints make six impractical.
Calibration is only as dependable as the reference values and the capture conditions used to derive it. Saturated pixels cannot provide a reliable response measurement. The paper’s authors set capture conditions so that the brightest reference stayed below digital number 240 on their 0–255 scale. That was their method-specific threshold, not a universal camera specification.

- Capture both channels under controlled conditions. Keep lighting and exposure conditions consistent between the red and NIR images, and avoid clipping the reference targets or vegetation highlights.
- Record the known-reflectance targets in the images. Use materials with documented reflectance values so the camera responses can be mapped to reflectance rather than treated as reflectance by assumption.
- Calibrate each channel. Apply a response-to-reflectance mapping appropriate to each camera and its image-processing behavior. The NDVIpi study’s six-reference method addresses nonlinear response; its two-reference alternative is less precise in the reported comparison.
- Register the camera images. Align matching scene features so each red value is paired with the corresponding NIR location.
- Calculate NDVI from calibrated values. For each valid aligned pixel, calculate (NIR reflectance − red reflectance) / (NIR reflectance + red reflectance). Exclude saturated or otherwise invalid inputs rather than interpreting them as plant condition.
Changing the camera, filter, exposure workflow, reference materials or selected wavelengths can change the mapping and the resulting index. For comparisons across dates, use a repeatable capture and calibration procedure. For comparisons between different camera systems, do not assume their raw or calibrated NDVI values are interchangeable without accounting for their band choices and calibration differences. The 2023 study reports that systems using different wavelength bands returned different NDVI values.

What validation shows—and what it does not
In its experiments, the NDVIpi study reported strong performance against standard spectrometry and NDVI performance comparable to a MicaSense RedEdge. Those findings support the feasibility of the particular calibrated design under the study’s conditions; they are not a guarantee for a different Raspberry Pi build, camera pair, filter or field workflow. The observed variation associated with its wavelength choice also illustrates why a single index value should not be interpreted without knowing how it was produced. Stamford et al., 2023

DIY dual-camera imager
Choose this architecture when you need spatial images or maps and are prepared to handle two camera channels, calibration and image registration. It offers control over image capture and band selection, but repeatability depends on managing those parts of the workflow together.
Purpose-built multispectral camera
A multispectral camera may suit work that needs a packaged imaging workflow or additional spectral bands and indices, such as NDRE. Check the actual band specifications and calibration method before comparing its values with a DIY imager: different wavelengths can lead to different NDVI results. The NDVIpi paper’s publication-era comparison included a MicaSense RedEdge, but does not establish current product prices or universal performance rankings.
Ground-based NDVI sensor
If the goal is repeated point or crop-level monitoring rather than detailed image maps, a ground-based sensor is another architecture. A 2025 study describes a sensor with handheld and standalone automated modes, priced under €250 in the study. Its authors tested it in Benin and the Philippines, with additional testing in Germany, and reported r² = 0.99 against a reference sensor after applying their derived calibration function. That is a result for that study’s sensor and calibration—not a performance guarantee for other devices. “A new, low-cost ground-based NDVI sensor for manual and automated crop monitoring,” Smart Agricultural Technology, 2025

How much does a low-cost NDVI setup cost?
Stamford and colleagues estimated that their complete NDVIpi system, including power source and screen, could be procured for approximately US$400–US$500 at the time of publication in 2023. Their paper contrasted this with approximately US$4,500–US$5,000 for a MicaSense RedEdge and US$14,000 for a Tetracam Macaw 6 at that time. These are publication-era estimates, not current retail quotes; a real build’s total also depends on the compute hardware, cameras, optics, mount and processing workflow. Stamford et al., 2023
The separate ground-based sensor study reports a price under €250. That figure belongs to the studied sensor and should not be treated as a like-for-like quote for an image-mapping camera system. The 2025 sensor study
Which approach fits the monitoring task?
- Choose a dual-camera imager when you need spatially resolved pictures and can manage channel separation, calibration and alignment.
- Consider a multispectral camera when the work requires a purpose-built imaging system or bands for indices beyond NDVI; verify its spectral bands and calibration before comparing readings.
- Consider a ground-based sensor when manual snapshots or automated repeated measurements are more useful than image maps.
For any option, decide whether results need to be comparable across lighting conditions or across instruments. That requirement determines how much attention the workflow must give to controlled capture, reference calibration and band differences. An NDVI reading is evidence of a reflectance pattern; interpreting why that pattern changed requires other observations and context.
