What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can start streaming without buying a camera, microphone, capture card, or powerful computer. Twitch says the practical minimum is a stable internet connection and an encoder—a software or hardware tool that sends video to the platform. Begin with a device you already own and free broadcasting software, test a simple setup, then spend only to fix a problem you can actually hear or see.
What do I need to start streaming?
At minimum, you need a stable internet connection and an encoder. The encoder may be software running on a computer or a device such as a phone or game console, according to Twitch Help’s “How Do I Stream FAQ”. Twitch also says a camera and microphone are optional: “No, you don’t need a mic or camera to stream.”

For a first broadcast, use the equipment you have, install a broadcasting tool, and keep the scene simple. A basic stream with clear gameplay or a presentation and understandable audio is more useful than a complicated setup that strains your computer or takes hours to troubleshoot.

Not necessarily. If your current computer can run the content you want to show and encode a stream at the same time, try it before considering an upgrade. Performance depends on the workload and configuration; a demanding game, elaborate overlays, and high output settings can be harder to handle than a simple scene.

Reduce the workload before replacing hardware
- Remove browser sources, overlays, animated elements, and scene layers you do not need.
- Lower the stream’s output resolution or other demanding settings and test again.
- Close unnecessary applications while streaming.
- Change one setting at a time and compare the result so you can identify what helped.
A 2022 study of 40 YouTube livestream setup videos describes lowering output quality and simplifying configurations as ways creators use budget or repurposed PCs. That is a configuration option, not a guarantee that every computer can stream smoothly. The study focuses on individual desktop-based setups, not every mobile or IRL workflow. See Drosos and Guo, “The Design Space of Livestreaming Equipment Setups: Tradeoffs, Challenges, and Opportunities,” ACM DIS ’22.
How can I start with free software?
OBS Studio is a free, flexible broadcasting option, but it has a learning curve. Free platform-provided software may guide beginners through setup more directly, often with fewer customization options. Twitch Creator Camp describes Twitch Studio as a free guided application and also lists Streamlabs as a guided option; software and platform support can change, so check the current availability and requirements before installing.

Use this low-cost workflow:
- Choose an existing device. Start with your computer, phone, or console if it can run the content and an encoder.
- Install a free broadcasting tool. Choose OBS Studio if you want flexibility, or check Twitch Creator Camp’s streaming software guide for current guided options.
- Build one simple scene. Add only the game, screen, camera, or audio sources you intend to use. Fewer sources make it easier to spot problems.
- Run a private or unlisted test. Use the platform’s available test or visibility controls rather than treating your first configuration check as a polished public broadcast.
- Review the basics. Check whether speech is intelligible, the image is framed as intended, and the stream reports dropped frames or other connection trouble.
- Adjust one thing at a time. If the test is rough, change a single setting or source, test again, and keep the change only if it improves the result.
How fast does my internet need to be?
Upload speed matters because your stream sends data from your connection to the platform. Twitch’s FAQ gives a rule of thumb: your upload speed should be at least the configured stream bitrate plus 30%. For example, apply that margin to the bitrate you actually configure; do not treat a speed-test result as a promise that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast. For platform-specific encoding settings, consult Twitch’s current broadcasting guidelines.
If a stream stutters, first check whether other devices or applications are using the connection, then test with a lower output demand. A wired connection may be worth trying if available, but the key requirement is a stable upload path—not a particular internet plan name.

Do I need a mic and/or camera?
No. Twitch says neither is required to start. Whether to add one depends on what viewers need from your format: spoken commentary benefits from intelligible speech, while a camera can add face-to-face context but is not essential to gameplay, screen demonstrations, or other formats.
Use existing audio and video first
- Audio: Test the headset, laptop microphone, or other audio input you already own. Listen back to a short recording; if speech is difficult to understand or picks up distracting noise, consider a separate microphone.
- Camera: Try the built-in camera or a phone you already have. The 2022 equipment study describes creators repurposing smartphones as cameras, though the connection and setup may vary.
- Lighting: Start with daylight or existing room lights. Move the light source and adjust your position before buying anything; intense light can wash out a webcam image, so brighter is not automatically better.
What should I buy first if something is not good enough?
Buy to address a specific, observable shortcoming—not because a checklist says every streamer needs more gear. The equipment tradeoffs below draw on the 2022 study by Ian Drosos and Philip J. Guo, which analyzed 40 YouTube setup videos. The authors note that the video sample may have selection bias, and it does not represent every kind of streaming setup. Its tradeoffs are useful; its historical price ranges should not be treated as current market prices.

| Item | Try first | When an upgrade may help | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer | Repurpose your existing PC and simplify the scene or output settings. | Consider new hardware only if your actual streaming workload remains unusable after reasonable configuration changes. | A stronger system can handle more demanding workloads, but buying one is the largest commitment here; the study does not establish current prices or a universal minimum specification. |
| Microphone | Test your existing headset or built-in mic. | A USB microphone for streaming can be a sensible first purchase when spoken interaction is central and current audio is inadequate. | USB models are generally simpler to set up than XLR arrangements, which require additional equipment; a separate mic still needs suitable placement and configuration. |
| Camera | Use a built-in camera or try a phone you already own. | A USB webcam may be useful if you want a dedicated, straightforward camera connection. | Higher-end DSLR or mirrorless setups add cost and connection complexity. The study’s camera price ranges are historical, not current recommendations. |
| Lighting | Reposition daylight or room lights and check the image. | Add a modest light only if your face or subject remains too dim or unevenly lit. | More intense light can wash out a webcam image; placement and balance matter. |
| Capture card | Stream directly from a supported PC or console workflow if it meets your needs. | Use one for a workflow that specifically needs it, such as certain console, high-end camera, or multi-PC arrangements. | It adds hardware, setup steps, and cost; it is not a universal beginner requirement. |
| Control hardware | Use your keyboard, mouse, and software shortcuts. | A programmable controller can be a convenience if you regularly switch scenes or trigger actions. | It is optional control convenience, not a prerequisite for a working stream. |
What should I test before going live?
- Audio: Can you understand speech or other important sound on playback? Is the right input selected?
- Framing: If you use a camera, is the subject visible without glare or washed-out highlights?
- Stream stability: Does the test report dropped frames, and does reducing output demands or simplifying the scene improve it?
- Scene sources: Are only the needed sources active, and are the game or screen and any overlays visible as intended?
- Platform requirements: Check the streaming platform’s current encoding guidance and content rules. Copyrighted music, video, or other material can create rights problems; use content you have permission to stream and review the platform’s current policies rather than assuming that credit or a short clip makes reuse permissible.
