If this is your first time going live, enable access early: YouTube says activation can take up to 24 hours.
Check that your channel can go live
YouTube’s current eligibility guidance says a streamer must be at least 16, the channel must be verified, and it must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until just before a planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Choose how to capture and broadcast gameplay
| Route | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Stream directly from a console | You already play on a modern console and its built-in streaming options meet your needs. | It is the simplest route, but offers less flexibility than an encoder-based setup for overlays and routing external audio or video. |
| Use an encoder | You play on a PC, want overlays, or need more control over game capture and external audio/video sources. | It requires configuring streaming software or a hardware encoder and checking that your computer can encode while the game runs. |
YouTube supports mobile, webcam, encoder, and console routes; for gameplay capture with overlays and flexible audio/video equipment, an encoder is the relevant option. Its encoder setup guide also links to verified encoders. YouTube notes that listed third-party products are not made by YouTube, so treat the list as a selection resource, not an endorsement.
Set up the game, audio, and optional equipment
Start with equipment you already have. YouTube says expensive gear is not necessary to begin. For gaming and casual streams, it names an external microphone, webcam, and headphones as common options; none is required for every creator. A microphone carries your commentary, a webcam adds a face camera, and headphones help you monitor audio. A face camera is optional.

Connect an encoder to YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or select a stream.
- Open the stream’s settings in Live Control Room and copy its server URL and stream key into the encoder’s destination settings. The exact labels vary by encoder.
- Keep the stream key private. It is a connection credential: do not show it in screenshots, on stream, or in public chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
- Choose the game-capture source and any microphone or webcam sources. Check that game sound and commentary are both present and balanced.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming signal and preview in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview and stream health, then select Go live in Live Control Room when you are ready to broadcast.

Choose settings your connection and computer can sustain
A stable, modest stream is a better first goal than the highest possible resolution. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, up to 60 fps. Its encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Encoder menus differ, so look for equivalent settings in your software or device.
| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations for the stated H.264 output modes, not universal internet-speed requirements. YouTube advises keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% upload headroom. That means the connection needs capacity beyond the configured bitrate, with enough stability for normal variation. If your upload fluctuates or your computer struggles to encode and play the game, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance and streaming tips.

Run a test before going public
- Set the stream to private or unlisted if you want to check it without making it public.
- Test with gameplay, movement, and audio similar to what you plan to broadcast; a static desktop is not a meaningful test of a fast-moving game.
- Start the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview for the correct game image, smooth motion, and audible game and microphone sound.
- Check stream health. If the connection or encoding is unstable, reduce output settings before your public stream.
- Once live, monitor the preview, health, and sound. When finished, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a longer broadcast will be saved as an archive; see the encoder setup guidance on archiving.

Gameplay does not automatically clear every sound heard in a game. Before including a game soundtrack, licensed music, or user-generated content, check YouTube’s current policies and the game or publisher’s guidance for streaming and music use. Whether a particular track is permitted depends on the applicable rights and terms; do not assume that owning or playing a game gives you permission to broadcast every recording in it.

Troubleshoot common first-stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| You cannot start a live stream | Channel eligibility or first-time activation is incomplete. | Confirm verification, age eligibility, and restriction status in YouTube’s live-stream setup. If access was just requested, allow up to 24 hours for activation. |
| Live Control Room receives no signal | The encoder has not started, or its destination URL or stream key is incorrect. | Compare the encoder’s destination settings with the current stream details in YouTube Studio, then start the encoder and wait for the preview. |
| The preview is missing the game or shows the wrong source | The encoder or console is capturing a different source than intended. | Select the gameplay source and verify it in the preview before going live. |
| Viewers cannot hear commentary or game audio | The relevant source may be muted, unselected, or routed incorrectly. | Check microphone and game-audio sources independently, then listen to a test stream with headphones. |
| Video or audio becomes unstable | The chosen output may exceed stable upload capacity or encoding capacity. | Check stream health, retain YouTube’s recommended upload headroom, and lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate before testing again. |
| Your stream key may have been exposed | The connection credential appeared in a screenshot, scene, or public message. | Replace or reset the key in YouTube Studio, update the encoder with the new key, and keep it out of public view. |
