Google documents this tile for Pixel Watch 3 only, and it works with televisions that are compatible with Google Home. If the watch isn’t an option, the Google TV app on Android is a documented phone-based fallback.
Check that your setup qualifies
- A Pixel Watch 3. Google’s TV-control help page names this as the watch that offers the TV remote tile and says the feature is not yet available on other Wear OS watches. Support can change, so confirm on that page if you use a different watch.
- A television compatible with Google Home. Google names the Google TV Streamer and Chromecast with Google TV as examples. These are examples of compatible devices, not required purchases. If you already own a compatible TV or streamer, you don’t need new hardware.
- The latest Google Home app on your phone and on the watch.
- The TV already added to Google Home. The tile can only control a television that is set up in the app.
Google Home for Wear OS has broader general requirements: a Google Account, a watch running Wear OS 3 or newer, an Android 9.0 or newer phone connected to Wi-Fi or LTE, and your devices already set up in Google Home on the phone. Meeting these general requirements does not extend the TV remote tile to other watch models; Google’s TV-control page sets that limit.

Add the TV remote tile and connect your TV
- On your Pixel Watch 3, open the tile library, add the TV remote tile, and open it.
- If your home and TV are already set up in Google Home, choose the TV you want to control from the tile.
- If you use more than one home or Google Account, select the correct account and home first, then pick the TV.
- If the TV doesn’t appear, add it in the Google Home app on your phone, then return to the tile.
The tile controls one TV at a time. If you have two televisions, change the selected TV in the tile when you need the other one.

What the watch can control
Google’s documentation lists these functions for the tile:
#1 Best Overall
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
- Media controls: play, pause, stop, progress, previous, and next.
- Volume adjustment.
- Power: turning the TV on from the watch.
- A virtual D-pad: directional controls with a center selection button for moving through menus.
The tile covers these listed functions. Google’s pages don’t say it duplicates every button on your physical remote, so keep the physical remote or your phone for anything outside this list.
Fix a missing tile
- Install all available updates from the Play Store on the watch.
- Check the Google Home app on the watch. If it is version 2.27.65.4 or later and the tile still doesn’t appear, force-stop Google Home, reopen it, and look for its “What’s new” notice.
- If the tile still doesn’t appear, wait. Google says configuration updates can take up to four hours, and a watch restart may be needed.
- If the problem persists, restart both the watch and the phone.
Fix watch volume controlling the wrong TV
If the watch adjusts volume on a different television than the one you want, set the preferred TV’s remote-button behavior on the TV itself:
Rank #2
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 41mm screen is twice as bright and 10% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]

- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]; and receive a daily target based on cardio load and readiness levels
- Open the TV’s Settings menu.
- Select Remotes & Accessories.
- Select Setup Remote Buttons.
- Select Volume Control, then choose your preferred TV.
Menu wording can vary by device and region. If your TV uses different labels, look for the equivalent remote-button volume setting.
Use the Google TV app on Android as a fallback
If the watch is unavailable, the Google TV app on Android can pair with a Google TV or Android TV device:
Rank #3
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]

- Open the Google TV app on your Android phone.
- Select the nearby TV from the list and choose your device.
- Enter the code displayed on the TV.
- Tap Pair.
Google documents playback control, power, Google Assistant, volume, and text entry on the phone. Google’s help page does not establish that every function works on every TV model, so test the controls you rely on after pairing.

Google’s setup instructions for a new device require a Google Account and a network connection. Phone-based onboarding is one route; manual setup through the television is available if you don’t want to use phone-based onboarding or if it fails. To pair the physical remote, Google’s instructions say to hold Back and Home together.
Watch or phone: which control to use
| Factor | Pixel Watch 3 TV remote tile | Google TV app on Android |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Pixel Watch 3 (the only watch model Google names for this tile) | Android phone |
| Controls | Media playback, volume, power, D-pad | Playback control, power, Google Assistant, volume, text entry |
| Setup | TV must already be added in Google Home; choose it in the tile | Select the nearby TV, enter the code shown on the TV, tap Pair |
| Speed, reliability, battery life | Not stated in Google’s pages | Not stated in Google’s pages |
In practice, the watch is the faster option if you already wear a Pixel Watch 3 and your TV is in Google Home. The phone app is the better fallback when you don’t have the watch with you.
