Lost World: The Broken Script is a lightweight horror-adventure modpack for Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 running on NeoForge. Install it through the pack’s current CurseForge or Modrinth project listing, select the matching 1.21.1 NeoForge file, and keep a backup of every world before changing versions. The pack includes The Broken Script, a quest and story line, new structures and mobs, and more than 50 random events.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
It can be played with friends using the included Essential and Simple Voice Chat mods, but multiplayer is explicitly not officially supported by The Broken Script. The 3.0.1 notes warn players to expect bugs, crashes and lag, so treat cooperative play as experimental rather than guaranteed.

Lost World is a curated collection of Minecraft mods, configuration files, resources and progression content. It is not a single mod that you drop into an existing installation. The project description calls it “a lightweight horror adventure modpack based on The Broken Script for Minecraft 1.21.1 with quests and surprises!” It also states plainly that it is a modpack, not a mod.
The pack’s central premise is a corrupted, crumbling world in which the player is watched, hunted and gradually driven insane. The Broken Script supplies the horror framework, while the surrounding pack adds the world generation, structures, progression and presentation needed for an adventure rather than a standalone scare encounter.

What is included
- Dangerous entities and terrifying mobs intended to make exploration unsafe.
- New structures that provide locations to investigate and routes through the world.
- More than 50 random events triggered by The Broken Script.
- A complete questing and story line to give the pack an intended progression.
- Essential for inviting friends and Simple Voice Chat for in-game communication.
- Optional shader and visual-patch support, including recommendations for SI: Spectre and, on the Modrinth listing, Photon as an alternative.
Because events are random, two saves can produce different sequences of encounters. A quiet opening does not mean the installation is broken; likewise, an early event does not establish the exact order of later story beats.
Version, edition and loader requirements
The supported combination identified by the official project listings is Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 with NeoForge. Do not install the pack into Bedrock Edition, a different Minecraft release, or a Forge/Fabric profile. A launcher may download or manage the NeoForge runtime for you, but the profile still has to report 1.21.1 and NeoForge before you launch.

Published files and what their labels mean
| File or note | What is established | How to use that information |
|---|---|---|
| 3.6.0 | CurseForge lists this as a 1.21.1 NeoForge release uploaded May 29, 2026. The listed package size is 286.9 MB. | A sensible starting point when the project page still marks it as a release. Confirm that it remains the current release before installing. |
| 4.0.0 entries | Later files are shown as alpha builds. | Use only if you deliberately want pre-release testing. Expect changes and keep a separate profile and world backup. |
| 3.0.1 release notes | The notes warn that multiplayer is not officially supported by The Broken Script and that players should expect bugs, crashes and lag. They also warn that worlds created before 3.0.0 will break when opened in 3.0.1. | Read the notes for the exact file you choose. Never assume a world made by an older build will migrate safely. |
| Server-pack variants | The CurseForge file listing includes server-pack variants. | Use the server package that matches the client release instead of mixing a server from one version with clients on another. |
Release names and upload dates are time-sensitive. The listing may change after this guide is published, so use the current project page to distinguish the latest stable release from alpha files. The 286.9 MB figure describes the listed 3.6.0 package, not a permanent download requirement for every future build.
What you need before installing
- A legal Minecraft Java Edition installation that can launch version 1.21.1.
- A launcher or distribution route that supports NeoForge modpacks and can import a CurseForge or Modrinth project.
- Enough free storage for the approximately 286.9 MB 3.6.0 download plus the unpacked instance, libraries, logs and world saves. The official listings do not publish a minimum disk, RAM or graphics specification.
- A copy of any existing world you care about, stored outside the active instance before you change versions.
- For multiplayer, the same pack version and loader on every client, plus a host or server capable of running the matching NeoForge server package.
No authoritative FPS target, minimum hardware specification or expected completion time is published for Lost World. Performance depends on the computer, render settings, world state, shader use and the number of active entities. Avoid treating a launcher’s generic Minecraft recommendation as a tested requirement for this pack.
How to install Lost World step by step
1. Start from the official project listing
Open the Lost World project page in the CurseForge or Modrinth route supported by your launcher. Check the game version, loader and file status shown on that page. Select a release file for Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge; do not choose an alpha merely because it has the highest number.

2. Create a separate instance
Use the launcher’s New Instance, Create Profile or equivalent command. Select Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 and NeoForge, then import or install the Lost World pack into that instance. A separate profile prevents the pack’s configuration and mods from colliding with a vanilla or unrelated modded installation.

Allow the launcher to download the pack’s listed mods, resources and configuration files. If it asks whether to install NeoForge, accept the runtime that belongs to the selected 1.21.1 profile. Do not copy individual files from a different Minecraft version to make the import appear complete; a partially mixed instance is harder to diagnose than a clean reinstall.
4. Confirm the profile before launching
Inspect the instance summary. It should identify Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge and should show Lost World rather than a generic NeoForge installation. If the launcher offers both release and alpha files, verify the exact file name and version you intended to use.
5. Launch once without visual extras
Run the newly installed instance with its default graphics settings before adding shaders or visual patches. The first launch may take longer while the loader builds caches. Reach the title screen, open a test world and confirm that the pack loads before you customize it.
6. Check the in-game configuration route
The project pages identify this path: Game Menu > Mods > The Broken Script > Config. Use it to inspect the mod’s available settings. Labels can vary with the installed build, so record what you change and make one change at a time when troubleshooting.

7. Add optional shaders only after the base pack works
SI: Spectre is the recommendation named by the project description, while the Modrinth listing also mentions Photon as an alternative. Euphoria patches are optional. Install only versions identified as compatible with your selected pack and loader, then test in a disposable world. If the image becomes black, flickers or causes severe slowdown, remove the visual add-on and return to the known-working profile.
Starting a world and understanding progression
Lost World is designed around exploration under pressure rather than a conventional peaceful resource rush. The new structures give you reasons to leave safe terrain, while dangerous entities and random events make familiar routes unreliable. The quest line is the clearest way to understand the intended order of objectives, so open the quest interface early and read each requirement before travelling far.
How random events affect play
The project advertises more than 50 random events triggered by The Broken Script. They are not a promise that every event will appear in one session or at a fixed time. Keep supplies, establish recognizable landmarks and avoid assuming that a previously safe location will remain safe after an event. If an event seems absent, first check that the mod loaded and that the relevant configuration has not been disabled; do not repeatedly regenerate worlds until you have checked the instance log and settings.
Managing the horror presentation
Darkness and uncertainty are part of the intended atmosphere. Optional shaders can deepen that effect, but they also add another source of incompatibility and performance cost. Begin with the default pack visuals, adjust brightness and render options gradually, and add a shader only when you can identify what changed if a problem appears.
Multiplayer: possible, but not officially supported
The pack includes Essential for friend invitations and Simple Voice Chat for communication, which makes cooperative play possible from the client side. However, The Broken Script’s 3.0.1 notes explicitly say that multiplayer is not officially supported and warn of bugs, crashes and lag. “Multiplayer safe” therefore cannot mean guaranteed stability. It means you can attempt a shared session while accepting a higher risk of technical problems and world corruption than in a supported multiplayer release.

Client-to-client session checklist
- Install exactly the same Lost World file, Minecraft 1.21.1 version and NeoForge loader on every player’s computer.
- Launch once in single-player on each computer so missing downloads and configuration errors are found before an invitation is sent.
- Have the host create a new test world. Do not use an irreplaceable long-running save for the first multiplayer trial.
- Use Essential’s invitation flow after all clients reach the same pack version. Keep Simple Voice Chat enabled only after the game connection itself works.
- Record crashes and lag by noting which player hosted, what event was active and which version was installed. Repeating the same test with a fresh world helps separate a world-specific problem from a pack-wide one.
Dedicated server route
For a persistent world, use the server-pack variant listed for the same release, then install the identical client pack on every player’s computer. The server and clients must agree on Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and the mod versions. Follow the server package’s own launch instructions and preserve the server world directory before every update. A server package from a different release is not a safe substitute just because its Minecraft version looks similar.
Because official multiplayer support is absent, a dedicated server does not remove the underlying compatibility risk. It may make administration and backups easier, but it cannot turn an unsupported TBS multiplayer configuration into a guaranteed one.
Protecting worlds and upgrading safely
The most important upgrade rule comes from the 3.0.1 notes: worlds created before 3.0.0 will break when opened in 3.0.1. Treat that as a destructive migration warning, not as a minor inconvenience.
- Stop Minecraft and the server completely before copying a save.
- Use the launcher’s Open Folder command to locate the instance, then copy the entire world folder to a separate backup location. For a server, copy the server world while the process is stopped.
- Give the backup a descriptive name containing the pack version and date, and keep the original untouched.
- Duplicate the launcher instance before testing a new release. Point the duplicate at a copy of the world, never at the only original.
- Read the exact release notes for the target file. Look specifically for world-format, migration and multiplayer warnings.
- Open the copied world once in the new profile. Check terrain, quests, inventory, structures and event behavior before deciding whether to migrate the main save.
If an old world already fails to open, close the game instead of repeatedly loading it. Restore the backup in the older profile that created it, or return to the last known-compatible release while you investigate. Do not delete the original save while experimenting.

The game crashes during startup
- Confirm the profile says Minecraft 1.21.1 and NeoForge, not another loader or game version.
- Disable recently added shaders, Euphoria patches or manual mods and launch the unmodified pack.
- Use the launcher’s repair, reinstall or file-verification option if available.
- Keep the crash report and latest log. The exact failing mod and version are more useful than a generic “it crashed” description.
The world lags or freezes
Test without shaders first, lower render-distance and simulation-distance settings, and compare a new world with the affected save. Large event activity, many entities and multiplayer traffic can produce different symptoms. Since no official performance benchmark is published, avoid assuming that a particular frame rate or memory allocation is guaranteed.

The screen is black or visually corrupted
Remove the shader or patch, relaunch with default visuals and confirm the base pack works. Re-add one visual component at a time only after identifying a compatible build. A shader problem should not be diagnosed by deleting the world; keep the save intact while changing presentation settings.
Voice chat does not work
First verify that players can connect and remain in the same world. Then check Simple Voice Chat’s key binding, microphone permission and input device in the client. If voice chat causes instability, disable it temporarily and continue testing the underlying multiplayer connection.
Quests or events appear missing
Check that The Broken Script appears in Game Menu > Mods and inspect its Config screen. Confirm that you launched the intended instance rather than a plain NeoForge profile. Test a fresh world before concluding that an existing save has lost content.
Choosing between release and alpha files
| Priority | Recommended choice | Reason | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| First installation | Current file marked release for 1.21.1 NeoForge | It is the project’s normal distribution channel and avoids knowingly selecting pre-release code. | It may not contain the newest experimental changes. |
| Testing new features | 4.0.0 alpha, only in a separate instance | Alpha files are appropriate when you intentionally want to test an unfinished build. | Expect configuration changes, crashes and save incompatibility; keep disposable worlds. |
| Existing pre-3.0.0 world | Its original compatible release until a documented migration exists | The 3.0.1 notes warn that such worlds break when opened in 3.0.1. | You may miss newer content until you can migrate safely. |
| Friends’ session | Identical release on every client, with a fresh test world | Version parity removes one common source of mismatched registries. | TBS multiplayer remains unsupported and can still lag or crash. |
Licensing and redistribution checks
License labels shown by CurseForge and Modrinth can differ between pages or versions, including examples such as LGPL-3.0-or-later and ARR. Do not infer a blanket license for every file in the pack from one label. Before redistributing the pack, mirroring files or publishing a server bundle, check the current project page and the individual component terms for the exact version you are using.
Quick installation and safety checklist
- Minecraft Java Edition 1.21.1 is installed and launches normally.
- The selected profile uses NeoForge.
- The Lost World file is marked for 1.21.1 and matches the intended release or alpha status.
- The first launch succeeds before shaders or patches are added.
- The Broken Script appears under Game Menu > Mods.
- Important worlds are copied before every version change.
- All multiplayer clients use the same pack, Minecraft version and loader.
- A new test world is used before an established save is opened in a new release.
- Multiplayer expectations account for the official warning about bugs, crashes and lag.
For most players, the safest route is a clean 1.21.1 NeoForge instance using the current release file, tested first in single-player, with backups made before any update. Add shaders and multiplayer only after that baseline works.
