On a Paper server, disable the main watchdog by stopping the server, opening server.properties, changing max-tick-time to -1, saving the file, and restarting. The setting prevents the watchdog from forcibly shutting down a process after a stalled tick, so investigate the stall first and use this as a deliberate operational choice rather than a routine performance fix.

What the Minecraft watchdog does
A Minecraft server runs game logic in ticks. The normal target is about 20 ticks per second, or roughly 0.05 seconds per tick. Paper documents max-tick-time as the maximum number of milliseconds one tick may take before the watchdog stops the server. Its documented default is 60000, meaning 60 seconds.

If one tick exceeds that threshold, Paper treats the condition as a crash and forcibly terminates the Java process by calling System.exit(1). A log such as [Paper Watchdog Thread/ERROR]: The server has not responded for 10 seconds! indicates that the server thread has stopped making timely progress; it does not identify one universal cause.
A 60-second tick is far outside normal operation. It can occur while a plugin or mod performs an unbounded task, during world generation or chunk loading, or when CPU, memory, or storage pressure prevents the server thread from running. Turning off the watchdog changes what happens after the stall; it does not make the stalled task complete faster.

Before you turn the watchdog off
The watchdog is a recovery mechanism. Without it, a hung Java process can remain alive indefinitely, continue consuming resources, and fail to restart automatically. A permanent change therefore deserves the same care as any other production configuration change.
- Make sure you can access the server console and the machine or control panel that starts the process. If the process hangs, you may need an administrator or process manager to stop it.
- Copy the current
server.propertiesfile and note the existing value so you can restore it. - Read the watchdog output, the latest server log, and any crash report before changing the timeout.
- Identify recent plugin or mod changes, especially code that runs on the main thread.
- Check whether the event coincides with world generation, large chunk loads, backups, or other scheduled work.
- Review CPU saturation, available memory, garbage-collection pressure, and storage latency while the incident occurs.
- Schedule the edit for a maintenance window if players depend on the server.
If the watchdog fires only during a known, finite operation, increasing the threshold temporarily may preserve automatic recovery while giving that operation more time. If the server repeatedly stops responding, disabling protection can hide a fault that will eventually corrupt uptime or require manual intervention.

1. Stop the server cleanly
Use the server console’s normal stop command or the stop control supplied by your host or service manager. Wait until the process has finished saving worlds and exited. Do not edit the file while the server is still running: a running process or panel may rewrite the file and discard your change.
2. Open the correct configuration file
In the server root directory—the directory containing the server jar and world folders—open server.properties in a plain-text editor. Do not open a similarly named file inside a world folder or a backup directory.
3. Set max-tick-time to -1
Find the line beginning with max-tick-time and make it exactly:

max-tick-time=-1Paper’s reference describes this value explicitly: setting it to -1 disables the watchdog entirely. Keep the key spelling and the equals sign intact; avoid adding spaces or replacing the hyphen with a typographic dash.

If no max-tick-time line exists, add the exact line shown above on its own line in server.properties. A missing key is different from a disabled key: the documented default remains in effect until the property is present with the new value.
5. Save and restart
Save the file as plain text, close the editor, and start the server using the same command, panel, or service definition as before. Watch the startup log for configuration errors and confirm that the server reaches its normal ready state. The change takes effect only when the server reads the file during startup.
Disable the watchdog or allow more time?
There are two different ways to change the shutdown behavior. The first removes the automatic limit; the second keeps a limit but makes it less aggressive. The appropriate choice depends on whether the stall is understood and bounded.

The documentation supplies the default and the disabling value, but it does not prescribe one universal replacement timeout. Choose any higher value only after measuring the operation and deciding how long unattended failure can safely continue. Record the temporary value and a date for reverting it; otherwise a diagnostic workaround can become an unnoticed permanent setting.

Do not confuse shutdown controls with warning controls
disable.watchdog is not the main shutdown switch
Paper documents a separate Java system property named disable.watchdog. Its purpose is to disable the watchdog warning system. Suppressing warning output does not replace max-tick-time=-1 when the goal is to stop the automatic process shutdown. A server can therefore produce fewer warnings while still retaining the shutdown threshold.
The paper-global.yml watchdog section
Paper’s paper-global.yml contains a watchdog section for Paper’s early-warning behavior. Those settings concern warnings and diagnostics. They do not, by themselves, remove the main watchdog limit in server.properties.
Spigot’s timeout uses different units
Paper’s spigot.yml reference documents settings.timeout-time in seconds. It represents the time since the last server tick before the server is considered unresponsive and stopped or restarted. Paper describes this as mirroring the vanilla-like server.properties setting while using seconds rather than milliseconds.
That unit difference matters. A value copied between the two files without conversion can wait for a radically different period. Always confirm which file and unit your server implementation is reading before changing a number.

Some spigot.yml references show max-tick-time.tile and max-tick-time.entity. Paper states that these options do not operate because they are disabled or non-functional. Editing them will not disable the main watchdog and should not be presented as an alternative to the documented server.properties value.

Which server software and file apply?

First identify the software named in the startup log or launch script. A panel may label a server generically while launching a different jar. Do not create a spigot.yml file on a server that never reads it, and do not assume that a similarly named property has the same unit or shutdown behavior outside the implementation that documents it.
Diagnose the stall before making a permanent change
Read the complete watchdog evidence
Save the log lines before and after the watchdog message and inspect any generated crash report. Look for the thread dump, the task that was executing, and the first error rather than focusing only on the final shutdown line. The message that the server has not responded for a stated number of seconds confirms a responsiveness problem, not its root cause.
Test plugins and mods methodically
Compare the incident with recent installations, updates, or configuration changes. A plugin or mod that performs synchronous work can block the main thread. Remove or update a suspected component in a test copy or maintenance window, then reproduce the workload while retaining the original logs. Avoid deleting components from a live world without a backup and a rollback plan.
Check world generation and chunk loading
Large exploration events, pregeneration, structure creation, and mass chunk loading can produce long main-thread tasks. Determine whether the stall occurs in one area, during a specific command, or only while generating new terrain. Reduce the triggering workload or schedule it in controlled batches instead of treating an unlimited timeout as the fix.
Check machine resources
- CPU: sustained saturation can prevent the server thread from receiving enough execution time.
- Memory: exhaustion or heavy garbage collection can pause useful work and may accompany allocation errors.
- Storage: slow or failing disks can delay world saves, chunk reads, and log writes.
- External pressure: backups, scans, or other services can compete for the same CPU, memory, or storage resources.
These checks narrow the cause; they are not a claim that every watchdog event has the same origin. Keep the watchdog enabled while investigating when automatic termination is safer than leaving a nonresponsive process running.
Short-term troubleshooting versus permanent operation

Verification, rollback, and common mistakes
Verify the effective configuration
- Stop the server and reopen the file to confirm that the saved line is exactly
max-tick-time=-1. - Start the server and confirm that it loads the expected server directory, especially if your panel manages multiple instances.
- Check the startup log for malformed-property errors and make sure the server reaches its ready state.
- Keep the next incident’s logs so you can determine whether the original stall still occurs even though automatic shutdown no longer does.
Do not deliberately freeze a production server just to test the watchdog. A controlled test environment is safer, and the setting’s documented meaning is sufficient to verify the configuration change.

Restore automatic protection
Stop the server cleanly, replace the value with the documented default:
max-tick-time=60000Save the file and restart. This restores the 60,000-millisecond threshold documented for Paper. If you previously used a higher positive value, restore the known-good value recorded in your change notes instead of guessing.
Correct the mistakes that cause most failed changes
- Wrong units:
max-tick-timeis documented in milliseconds, while Spigot’ssettings.timeout-timeis in seconds. - Wrong file: editing a backup, a world subdirectory, or a different instance has no effect on the running server.
- Wrong property:
disable.watchdogconcerns warning output, and tile/entity keys are non-functional in Paper’s documentation. - Typo or formatting error: use the exact lowercase key, equals sign, and negative-one value.
- No restart: a running process does not normally reread this startup property just because the file changed.
- Concurrent writes: panels or scripts can overwrite an edit made while the server is active.
- No recovery plan: removing the watchdog without a way to stop a hung process can turn a brief incident into a prolonged outage.
Practical decision checklist
- Is the server definitely running Paper or another implementation whose documentation supports this key?
- Have you stopped the process and backed up the configuration?
- Do you need to suppress warnings, or do you actually need to prevent automatic shutdown? They are different goals.
- Have you checked crash reports, logs, plugins or mods, world-generation and chunk-loading work, CPU, memory, and storage?
- Would a higher positive timeout preserve useful recovery behavior?
- If you choose
-1, who will monitor the process and recover it when it stops making progress? - Have you recorded the change and a rollback value?
The key distinction is operational: -1 removes Paper’s automatic response to a stalled tick, while warning controls only change what is reported. Treat a watchdog event as evidence of a severe server-thread stall, and disable the protection only when the resulting manual-recovery responsibility is acceptable.
