When Jon Gilbert moved to a new Pixel, his Desert Golfing save appeared to fall from roughly hole 6,000 to hole 83. His account shows why losing app progress can hurt even when a game has no elaborate rewards: a tiny daily routine can become part of a person’s life. It also illustrates a practical distinction—an Android phone backup and a game’s own save system are not the same thing.
Why a missing save can feel like a real loss
In an essay published by Android Police on August 30, 2026, Jon Gilbert described losing years of progress in Desert Golfing while setting up a new Pixel from a cloud backup of his previous phone. He said his old game had reached roughly hole 6,000, while the new phone displayed hole 83. Those numbers are details from his personal account, not independently verified app records. The significance, in Gilbert’s telling, was not just the lost number. Playing a hole each day had made the game a small, persistent companion through a decade of life. He described the game’s fabled target as 10,001, but that is his essay’s framing, not an independently verified specification of the game’s endpoint. His conclusion was personal: he was sad about losing the progress, but did not feel the time was wasted. That reaction belongs to Gilbert; other players may feel differently.

An Android device backup and a game’s save system serve different purposes. Google warns that app support varies and that not every app can back up or restore all settings and data. Restore behavior can also vary by Android version and device. A successful phone setup therefore does not prove that every game save came across. Google’s Android backup and restore guidance explains this limitation.

Some games store progress locally; others connect a save to an account or use a cloud-save service. Google Play Games can restore progress only for games that support its save system, and Google notes that not all games automatically save progress. The game developer determines which saving method is implemented. Android’s developer documentation describes Google Play Games Saved Games as one cloud-save option and explains that games must handle conflicts between local and cloud copies. Android Developers’ cloud-save documentation describes that implementation.
What to check if your game is missing progress
- Check the account. Confirm that the same Google account used on the old device is active in Google Play Games and in any account system the game uses.
- Check whether the game supports Play Games saves. Google’s game-data restore guidance recommends checking whether the game uses Google Play Games and whether the correct account is selected. A game that does not use the supported save system may not restore progress through it.
- Contact the game developer if the save is still missing. Google says it does not manage in-app data or game accounts; for a game-specific progress issue, its guidance is to contact the developer.
- Protect any remaining local data before trying destructive fixes. Avoid clearing the game’s storage or reinstalling until you have checked with the developer and considered whether the old device may still hold a local save. Those actions can remove local data, and Google’s general troubleshooting guidance does not guarantee that such a save can be recovered.
In Gilbert’s case, the available account does not identify the technical cause: it does not establish whether the game’s data was excluded from backup, a restore failed, or the save relied on another mechanism. Nor does it establish a recovery route for his Desert Golfing save. A phone-transfer accessory cannot be assumed to retrieve progress that the game did not preserve or sync.

How to reduce the risk before changing phones
Before replacing or resetting a device, check the game’s own help pages or settings for account linking, cloud saves, cross-device restore, and export options. If the game offers a sign-in or sync feature, confirm that it is connected and that progress appears on another supported device before wiping the old one. When a game provides no documented transfer or export method, its developer is the authority on whether progress can be moved or recovered.
For developers, cloud saving is not merely uploading a file: the game must decide what happens when local and cloud versions differ. Android’s documentation calls out this conflict-resolution work, which is why “cloud save” alone does not guarantee a seamless migration.
