Lossless Music: Cut Storage Needs Without Losing Audio Quality

Lossless music uses more streaming data and local storage than standard-quality audio, but compatible devices can play it without a new DAC. Here’s what determines the real cost.

Lossless music costs more in bandwidth and device storage than lower-quality audio, but it does not automatically require new playback hardware. FLAC reduces file size without discarding encoded audio information; whether you need a compatible DAC depends on your device and the resolution you want to play.

What “lossless” means for storage

Lossless audio preserves the encoded audio information while compressing it. It is not the same as uncompressed audio: FLAC reduces the space needed to store digital audio and decodes back to the original data. The IETF’s RFC 9639 defines FLAC support for 1–8 channels, 4–32 bits per sample, and sample rates from 1 to 1,048,575 Hz. Those are format limits, not typical music settings.

A common reference point is CD-quality stereo audio at 16-bit/44.1 kHz. Higher-resolution files can carry more data per sample or use a higher sample rate, but the resulting storage and streaming demands depend on the audio and encoding; “lossless” alone does not specify one fixed file size.

How CD-quality and high-resolution tiers compare

For a concrete service example, TIDAL labels 16-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC as High and offers HiRes FLAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz as Max, according to its support page updated January 9, 2026. Max may fall back to FLAC or AAC when a higher-resolution source is unavailable, so the tier name does not guarantee that every track streams at its maximum resolution.

Listening option Resolution example TIDAL data-use guidance Practical implication
CD-quality lossless (High) 16-bit/44.1 kHz FLAC Up to 10 MB per minute; actual use varies Less data than TIDAL’s stated Max ceiling, but still more than standard-quality streaming according to Apple.
High-resolution lossless (Max) Up to 24-bit/192 kHz HiRes FLAC Up to 40 MB per minute; actual use varies with sample rate Can use substantially more data and requires compatible playback equipment to deliver the selected resolution.

These figures are TIDAL service guidance, not universal bitrate or file-size guarantees. TIDAL recommends a steady internet connection of at least 1.5 to 2 Mbps for the best streaming experience on High and Max; actual performance also depends on the connection and playback conditions. See TIDAL’s HiRes FLAC guidance.

What streaming and downloads cost in data and space

Streaming over a mobile or home connection

Higher-quality streaming can consume your data allowance faster. TIDAL’s estimates above illustrate the possible difference between its High and Max settings. Apple likewise says lossless streaming uses significantly more network data than standard quality. If you have a limited mobile plan, use a lower streaming setting on cellular or download music over Wi-Fi where the service allows it.

Saving music on a phone, computer, or player

Lossless downloads take significantly more device storage than standard-quality downloads, and higher resolutions use more space than lower ones, Apple says. There is no universal “right” amount of free space: it depends on how many tracks you save, their duration, resolution, and encoding. Check the service’s download settings and your device’s available storage before building a large offline library.

An external drive can be an optional place for a downloaded or archived library if your device and workflow support it. Choose capacity based on the actual library you plan to keep and whether you need a separate backup; the format label alone is not enough to calculate a useful drive size.

Do you need a new DAC or other hardware?

Not necessarily. Supported Apple devices can play lossless through wired headphones, receivers, powered speakers, or built-in speakers. Apple says an external DAC may be needed above 48 kHz in certain cases. TIDAL advises checking whether the listening device’s DAC supports 24-bit/192 kHz and recommends wired or Wi-Fi playback for its highest tier. The exact requirement therefore depends on the device, connection, service, and target resolution—not simply on choosing lossless.

  1. Check the playback device. Look up its supported sample rates and bit depths, and confirm whether its built-in audio output or DAC can handle the resolution you intend to use.
  2. Check the connection. For the highest-resolution playback, follow the service’s connection guidance; Bluetooth or another wireless route may not deliver the same signal path as a supported wired connection.
  3. Buy an external DAC only if there is a specific gap. If your device cannot output the desired resolution, a compatible external DAC may address that limitation. Otherwise, an upgrade is not an inherent cost of lossless listening.

Apple’s device and playback guidance is at Apple Support; TIDAL’s compatibility guidance is in its HiRes FLAC support article.

How to decide whether the extra cost is worthwhile

  • If you mostly stream on a limited data plan: prioritize the quality setting that fits your allowance; lossless can use substantially more data than standard quality.
  • If you download a large library: check free space and expected library size before switching downloads to lossless. Higher-resolution files generally require more space.
  • If you already have compatible wired playback: try lossless before buying hardware. A DAC upgrade is conditional, not mandatory.
  • If you want the highest-resolution tier: verify that the track source, device DAC, and connection all support the intended resolution.
  • If your goal is audible improvement: treat it as a personal preference rather than a guaranteed result. The cited format and support documents explain technical fidelity, storage, and compatibility; they do not establish that every listener can hear a difference.

There is no single current price for the “hardware cost” of lossless in the evidence here, because many listeners may need no new hardware and any DAC or storage purchase depends on their existing setup and library. Consider those purchases only after identifying an actual compatibility or capacity constraint.
