DeviceTimeReq is a payload-free LoRaWAN MAC command that asks the Network Server for the current network time. If the server responds, it sends DeviceTimeAns as a Class A downlink in RX1 or RX2. The response contains GPS time—not a ready-made UTC timestamp—and is especially useful for helping a device acquire a Class B beacon.
What DeviceTimeReq does
DeviceTimeReq lets an end-device request network time. It has no payload: the command itself carries no timestamp or other data. The command is defined in the LoRa Alliance’s LoRaWAN L2 1.0.4 Specification, section 5.9.

The specification says end-devices and Network Servers shall implement the commands, but describes the request and response behavior as optional. A request therefore does not guarantee that a particular network will send an answer; the standards do not guarantee deployment configuration or timely downlink availability.
What DeviceTimeAns contains
The answer is five octets: four octets encode an unsigned seconds count, and one octet encodes a fractional part. Each fractional unit represents 1/256 of a second. The Network Server’s time value refers to the end of the uplink transmission that carried the request.

- Time scale: GPS time, counted from January 6, 1980 at 00:00:00 UTC.
- Fraction: 1/256-second increments.
- Delivery: A Class A downlink in RX1 or RX2.
- Specified accuracy: The LoRa Alliance specification requires worst-case accuracy of ±100 ms for the time provided by the Network.
That accuracy requirement applies to the provided network time; it is not a guarantee of the end-device’s clock accuracy after drift, missed updates, or application-level clock handling.
Why the timestamp is not UTC
The seconds count is on the GPS timescale. To express it as UTC, an implementation must account for leap seconds; do not treat the count as a Unix timestamp or subtract a fixed offset without maintaining the applicable GPS-to-UTC conversion.

The specification gives a historical example: GPS time was 17 seconds ahead of UTC as of June 2017. That figure is dated and must not be assumed to be the current offset. As another check on the epoch, the specification maps February 12, 2016 at 14:24:31 UTC to 1,139,322,288 seconds since the GPS epoch.
How it relates to Class B beacon acquisition
A device needs suitable timing to acquire Class B beacons. The L2 1.0.4 specification says synchronizing the device’s internal clock with network time can speed up that acquisition. It also says the older BeaconTimingReq and BeaconTimingAns commands have been deprecated since L2 1.0.3 and should be replaced by DeviceTimeReq and DeviceTimeAns.

The LoRa Alliance’s LoRaWAN Specification v1.0.3 page identifies DeviceTimeRequest as a command for synchronizing a device’s real-time clock. The more detailed behavior and accuracy figures above are from L2 1.0.4.
Which time source should a device use?
The right source depends on the device’s LoRaWAN version and available clocks. The LoRa Alliance’s Application Layer Clock Synchronization Specification v1.0.0 gives this guidance:

- LoRaWAN 1.1 or later, without another accurate clock: Use the
DeviceTimeReqMAC command rather than the separate application-layer clock synchronization package. - Class B device: Use network beacon time directly.
- Device with an accurate external clock: Use that source; the Alliance gives GPS as an example.
These are source-selection recommendations, not comparative performance results. The package page does not establish numerical differences in efficiency or accuracy between the approaches.
Implementation points to keep straight
- Keep the protocol layers distinct:
DeviceTimeReqis a MAC command; the clock synchronization package is an application-layer mechanism. - Interpret the answer as GPS time and apply leap-second handling when UTC is needed.
- Anchor the received time to the end of the request uplink, as specified.
- Do not assume every network will answer or that the specified network-time accuracy describes the device’s long-term clock discipline.
