Yes—some cars can gain features, refinements, or fixes through software updates after delivery. Automakers can send some of these updates over the air (OTA), but what changes, which vehicles qualify, whether an update costs money, and how often one arrives depend on the exact vehicle. Treat future improvements as a model-specific possibility, not a promise that every car will keep gaining features.
What can change after you buy a car?
An OTA update sends software to a vehicle without requiring a conventional service visit for that update. Depending on the manufacturer and vehicle, it may add a feature, refine an existing function, improve an app or connection, or address a problem. It does not replace routine maintenance, and a software update is not automatically a safety recall remedy.

The automakers describe different scopes. Tesla says its vehicles regularly receive updates that add features and enhance existing ones. Ford has described OTA updates as a way to improve quality, capability, and convenience. GMC lists examples including app improvements, connectivity refinements, and Super Cruise road expansion for eligible vehicles. These are company descriptions of their own offerings, not an independent comparison of how much better the cars become.
What an update cannot promise
Software can change how installed systems work, but it cannot supply hardware a vehicle does not have. Whether a particular feature can be added depends on the vehicle’s equipment, software, market, and the automaker’s eligibility rules. The cited automaker materials do not establish a universal guarantee that every vehicle will receive every future feature—or a common support period or update schedule across brands.

Nor does “updated” by itself establish longer vehicle life, improved reliability, higher resale value, a safety improvement, or savings. Those outcomes cannot be inferred simply from the availability of OTA updates.
How updates reach the vehicle—and what installation involves
Update procedures differ by automaker and vehicle. Read the in-vehicle prompt and the owner’s manual rather than assuming one brand’s process applies to another.

Tesla
Tesla says a stable Wi-Fi connection is needed to download an update. The vehicle must be parked during installation and cannot be driven; some installations can take several hours. Tesla also says updates roll out over time, with availability depending on configuration and region, and that it is not possible to revert to a previous software version.
GMC
GMC says eligible vehicles can use Wi-Fi or built-in data. The vehicle notifies the owner when an update is available, and the owner can start it or schedule it. Follow the instructions shown in the vehicle for the specific update.

Updates, paid upgrades, and safety recalls are different
Routine software updates and optional upgrades are not necessarily free. GMC says eligible owners can receive complimentary enhancements and purchase upgrades, so ask whether a particular change is included or separately priced.
OTA can also be used for some safety recall remedies, but an update notification is not proof that an open recall has been completed. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s 2025 annual report counts vehicles in recalls partially or fully remedied using OTA updates. For 2025 recall-year counts, it reports 2,365,332 Ford vehicles and 679,242 Tesla vehicles; these are recall-remedy vehicle counts, not totals for all OTA updates or new features, and they do not show that every vehicle benefits in the same way. NHTSA’s 2025 report supports the limited conclusion that OTA is one channel for some recall remedies—not that dealer service is unnecessary in every case.

Recall instructions can offer a choice of remote and in-person service in a specific case. For example, Ford/Lincoln recall material hosted by NHTSA describes a particular remedy that owners could install themselves or have a dealer perform. Do not treat that recall’s instructions as a general update procedure. Check the official recall status for the vehicle identification number (VIN) and follow the remedy provided for that vehicle.
How to compare update support before buying
Ask the automaker or dealer for written answers tied to the exact model year, trim, market, and vehicle configuration. A broad claim that a brand supports OTA updates does not establish that a specific car can receive a particular update.

- Systems: Which systems can be updated remotely, and which require a dealer visit?
- Update scope: Can updates cover infotainment, connectivity, driver assistance, powertrain, or safety systems? Ask what applies to the specific vehicle.
- Eligibility and hardware: Does the feature require equipment the vehicle has, and is the exact year, trim, and region eligible?
- Timing: How are updates delivered, and is any cadence or future availability actually guaranteed?
- Installation: What connection is required, can installation be scheduled, and will the vehicle be unavailable during the process?
- Cost: Are routine updates and the feature you care about complimentary, or is there a separate charge?
- Recall status: If a safety issue is involved, is the remedy officially complete for this VIN?
For a current vehicle, consult its owner materials and feature terms; for a vehicle you are considering, get eligibility and costs confirmed in writing. A model-specific answer is more useful than a general promise that the car will improve over time.
What automakers say about future update capacity
GM has reported that more than 4.5 million vehicles could receive OTA vehicle-system updates and that 1.6 million received coordinated updates in the prior year. Its announcement also describes a planned centralized architecture beginning with Cadillac ESCALADE IQ in 2028. Those are GM-reported figures and a forward-looking company plan, not a guarantee of future features or an industry-wide capability. GM’s announcement describes its stated plans and figures.
Ford’s 2019 article said OTA capability was planned for most redesigned U.S. vehicles beginning in 2020. Because that rollout statement is dated, it should not be used as a current eligibility list. Verify capability for the exact vehicle rather than assuming a past plan applies to a model on sale today.
