The longest SNES games are not a single, definitive list: completion-time estimates depend on whether you mean finishing the main story, exploring more thoroughly, or continuing an open-ended simulation. A 2023 Destructoid ranking, attributing its hours to HowLongToBeat, offers a useful starting point—but its figures are reported estimates, not independently timed playthroughs, and the article does not specify every completion category or regional version.
Long SNES games, according to the 2023 ranking
James Herd’s Destructoid list, published October 2, 2023, names 20 games and says its estimates come from HowLongToBeat. The visible entries below give a sense of the range. The source does not establish game-level sample sizes or a dated aggregate statistic, so treat the hours as attributed database estimates—not exact promises of how long your playthrough will take.

| Game | Reported estimate | What can extend the play |
|---|---|---|
| Secret of Mana | 25 hours | Action-RPG campaign and exploration |
| Chrono Trigger | 26 hours | Story completion; optional content and repeat runs can change total time |
| Robotrek | 26 hours | Role-playing campaign |
| Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals | 29 hours | Role-playing campaign and exploration |
| Harvest Moon | 29 hours | Open-ended farming and recurring in-game activity |
| EarthBound | 30 hours | Role-playing campaign and exploration |
| The 7th Saga | 30 hours | Role-playing campaign |
| Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen | 31 hours | Strategy campaign |
| SimCity 2000 | 33 hours | Open-ended city building rather than a fixed story ending |
The activity column describes the broad kind of play, not a breakdown supplied with each hour figure. The ranking does not say consistently whether its estimates mean main-story completion, a more complete playthrough, or time spent with a game that can continue indefinitely. That makes an exact hour-to-hour comparison misleading, especially between a story-driven RPG and a simulation such as SimCity 2000.
How to interpret the hours
Story completion is not the same as doing everything
A main-story estimate answers how long it may take to reach a campaign’s ending. Optional quests, exploration, collectibles, alternate paths, and additional endings can add time. A more complete-playthrough estimate may include some of those activities, but the Destructoid ranking does not document the category for each title. It is safest to use the listed hours to identify games that may demand a substantial commitment, not to schedule a precise number of evenings.

Open-ended games do not have a comparable finish line
Harvest Moon and SimCity 2000 can keep a player occupied through repeated routines or self-directed goals, rather than one universally defined completion point. A single number for either game depends heavily on what the player considers “done.” This is a different kind of long play from reaching the ending of an RPG.
Rankings shift with scope and play style
In comments on the list, readers dispute whether Chrono Trigger belongs among the longest games and suggest that Japan-only strategy RPGs deserve consideration. Those comments are opinions, not alternate measured estimates, but they highlight why rankings vary: region, genre, optional content, replay, and the definition of completion all affect what gets counted.

Regional availability changes which games count
The Super Nintendo library was not identical in every region. Time Extension’s SNES RPG catalog records regional release dates for examples including Terranigma, Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy III, Secret of Mana, and Lufia II. Some games reached different regions at different times, while Japanese releases expand the potential pool beyond titles familiar to North American or European players. The 2023 Destructoid list is therefore a useful selection, not proof of a universal, region-independent top ranking.
Where to play selected entries
Nintendo’s Super NES Classic Edition manuals catalog includes manuals for EarthBound and Secret of Mana among its selected games. The Classic Edition is a curated way to play some SNES titles, not a device that includes every game in this list; check current retail availability before seeking one out.
