Long Reach Ethernet can mean two different things: Cisco’s historical VDSL-based product for carrying Ethernet over telephone-grade copper, or modern single-pair Ethernet designed for longer links, especially the IEEE 10BASE-T1L PHY. The distinction matters: their rates, reach figures, wiring assumptions, and equipment are not interchangeable.
What does Long Reach Ethernet mean?
There is no single modern Ethernet PHY officially named “Long Reach Ethernet.” In older Cisco material, Long-Reach Ethernet (LRE) is the name of a vendor-specific VDSL system. In current industrial-networking contexts, “long reach” is often descriptive shorthand for single-pair Ethernet links such as 10BASE-T1L, standardized in IEEE 802.3cg-2019. When a source gives a distance or speed, first identify which meaning it uses.

IEEE’s overview distinguishes the two 10 Mb/s single-pair PHYs in 802.3cg: 10BASE-T1S is the short-reach member, while 10BASE-T1L is the long-reach point-to-point member, with a stated reach of up to 1 km. IEEE Standards Association overview describes the short-reach form as 15 m and the long-reach form as up to 1 km. The standard itself is listed in the IEEE 802.3 standards archive.
How 10BASE-T1L works—and what its reach depends on
10BASE-T1L carries Ethernet at 10 Mb/s over one balanced copper pair in a point-to-point link. Cisco’s 2023 Converged Plantwide Ethernet (CPwE) guide describes links up to 1,000 m, but that is a design target under the applicable PHY and installation requirements—not a guarantee for any pair of wires.

For its maximum-distance example, Cisco specifies 18 AWG shielded twisted-pair cable and allows up to ten inline connectors. Conductor gauge and resistance matter: smaller conductors have greater direct-current resistance and can reduce achievable reach. Impedance suitability, cable balance, shielding, connectors, and the selected devices also need to match the link requirements. 10BASE-T1L, 10BASE-T1S, and Ethernet-APL are not synonyms
10BASE-T1L
This is the 10 Mb/s long-reach, point-to-point PHY in IEEE 802.3cg. Its up-to-1,000 m figure is conditional on the compliant link design and media.

10BASE-T1S
This is the short-reach member of the same single-pair Ethernet family. IEEE gives 15 m as the short-reach figure; Cisco also describes short point-to-point and multidrop uses. It is a different choice from T1L, including in applications such as automotive networks.

Ethernet-APL
Ethernet-APL builds on the 10BASE-T1L data layer but adds requirements tailored to process-control environments, including EMC performance, shield connections, and topology. A device that supports generic 10BASE-T1L is not automatically Ethernet-APL-compliant. Analog Devices explains the distinction in its Ethernet-APL technical article.

What Cisco LRE meant historically
Cisco’s LRE was a VDSL-based product family that extended Ethernet over existing Category 1, 2, or 3 twisted-pair wiring, including telephone-grade wiring. Cisco’s historical figures are 5–15 Mb/s full duplex and distances up to 5,000 feet; a period seminar document describes reach of about 1,500 m. These are vendor-era product figures, not guarantees for 10BASE-T1L or current standards-based equipment.
Cisco’s 2008 FAQ lists the Cisco 2900 LRE XL switch, Cisco 575 LRE customer-premises equipment, and a 48-port POTS splitter among the system components. A newer long-reach single-pair standard
IEEE Std 802.3dg-2026 is a separate 100 Mb/s long-reach single-pair Ethernet standard. The IEEE 802.3 task-force page reports approval at the IEEE SA Standards Board meeting in June 2026. Do not confuse its 100 Mb/s operation with 10BASE-T1L’s 10 Mb/s PHY. See the IEEE 802.3dg task-force page.

How to identify which meaning applies
- If the source discusses VDSL, old Cisco LRE equipment, POTS splitters, or Category 1/2/3 wiring, it means the historical Cisco product.
- If it names IEEE 802.3cg or 10BASE-T1L, it means the standardized 10 Mb/s single-pair PHY.
- If it names 10BASE-T1S, it means the short-reach PHY, not the 1 km T1L link.
- If it names Ethernet-APL, check for the process-control-specific requirements in addition to the underlying 10BASE-T1L data layer.
- If it names IEEE 802.3dg-2026, it refers to the distinct 100 Mb/s long-reach standard.
